TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, C. C. BELLCWS, of New Ipswich., in the county of Hillsborough, and State of New Hampshire, have invented a. new and improved Machine for Crcasing, Slicking, und Skiving Leather; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the nrt to mnke und use the sume, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming; part of this specicntion, in which- .Figure 1 is a. front view of my invention.
Figure 2, n transverse vertical. section ofthe same, taken in the line a: x, fig. l. Figure 3, a. detached view of a. roller pertaining to the same. Figure 4, a detached view of n skiving-knit'e pertaining to the same. Figure 5, a detachcd view of a. triple lever pertaining to the same. Figure 6,- n detached view of a portion ot' a clamp-frame pertaining to the some. Figures 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11, detached views of the specimens of work peri'ormedby the machine. Similar letters of reference indicate like ports. This invention relntes to a new ond improved machine for creasing, slicking, ahdxskiving leather, and it relates to nn improved moons for supporting the 'lower adjustable roller, whereby the latter is prevented from springing :s the leather is drawh between the two rollers-L The invention also consists ins. novel application of e. skiving-k'nife, and also of the lower adjustable roller, and in the application of a saddle-skirt creasing device, all being arranged as herein after fully shown and described, whereby s very eicient device is obtained for the manufacture of leather strnpsfor harnesses, and the creasing @E saddle-skirts, ttc., Snc. p
A5 represents n base or foundation, on which two uprights, B B, nre secured, and C is a. roller, the bearings of which are in the upper ends of the uprights B B, said roller C being grooved circumferentinlly, the grooves being of di'er'ent widths, to suit the di'erent Widths of straps to he operated upon, and the bottoms of the grooves provided with projections a, to form creuses in the straps. (See tig. 1.) D (figs. 1 und 2) represents s. roller, which s turnc'd with projections to it into the grooves of the upper roller C, and this roller D hns its bearings, b, in the arms c of s triple lever, E, said lever having its lulcrunx at the upper end of -sn upright, F, und having n'nupright rod, G, passing through-it, on Athe upper end; of which there is athumb-nut, H, with n spiral spring, Ljinterposcd between said nut and thc lever. This spring I has a. tendency to keep the lower roller-'D up in contact with the upper roller C, and, if necessary or so desired, n weight may be applied to E, toasaist the spring I in performing that function. The triple or three-armed lever E prevents the roller D from springing, I the central arm e'ecting that result. This is nn importsnt-f'enture, for it insures thc perfect operation of the two rollers,'they being kept parallel with each other. `J'represents a plute, having knives rl attached to or formed on it. These knives lit in the upper parts of tho lgrooves in the upper roller C, and have nearly n tsngential'position therewith. This plate J is tted on the upper ends of the bars K K, the lower ends of which are bent in slightly hook-form, to t into staples e'c on the hss-e o'r found'ltipfnA, the" plate J' being fitted betonnen jam-nuts c e on the bars K K. L is a frame composed oi' two bsrs, M' M, connected by a transverse bnr,f, and having their lower ends curved and fitted in staples g on the buse or foundstion-A, the upper ends of the bars M M having links VN sttnched to t over the upper ends of the bnrsK K, and retain or hold tho knives d in .proper position relatively with roller C. These knives d uro used for slri'vin or i cuttin'g o' leather strips ll, 4 which are fitted between the two parts 1'1" of the strap. (Seo figs. 8 and 9. The straps for certain ports of harnesses ore composed of a rounded part, z', a dat part, i', and a. filling, It, the two parts, z' 1", being stitched together near their -edges with the lling secured between them. Tho rounded parts z' nrc formed by the grooves in the rollers C'D, having respectively-n concave und convex sur'fsce, and the dat ports formed bygroovss having a: surfaces, both forms pt' grooves being shown in iig. 1. The power is applied to tho lower roller D, y and the tivo rollers nro connected by gears 5'-, one of which, k, on tho upper roller C, has xpopgJggiiJ-n the lower one, k', on the lower roller D, in order that the oppor roller luy rotsto s trieg'li; than he 10, oned and the work be thereby slicked or polished while bain. Grilled and n'isrsd or rounded. By hsvinggh. v lower roller D ttoi on the srlls of tho lov" l, Dld thc sprigts B B slotted, ss shown at a*, to 'admit .of its passing underneath the relier C, said roller may be changed at pleasure to suit the dierert kinds of we?? re nii-ed rn be performed. On one side of the shaft or journal ot" the upper roller C there is fitted an adju-stable isinhwheel, F. This wheel is allowed to slide on the shaft or `journnl, and' is secured at any desired point by n set-scre\v, Z. On the shaft or journal of the lower roller D there is fitted a. voller. G, having a. (lange, m, at its inner edge. This creasing-wheel und roller are designed for creasing saddle-skirts, and by moving:r or adjusting the wheel F en the shaft or journal of the upper roller, the crease may be made in the skirt ut n. greater er less distance from its edge, :1s may be desired. The skirt, as it; passes between the creasingnvheel F :uid the roller C, has its edge pressed against the nnge m, which serves: as :L bearing er guide.
This machine has been practically tested, and has been found to answer a. goed purpose.
Having thus described my' invention, what I claim :1s new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The cembinatien of the slotted standards B,slbtted triple-armed lever E, springs I, und rods G, arranged tu operate with the roller D, when constructed and applied in the' manner and for the purpose. specierl.
2. The plate J, having skiring-knires LZ attached to or fm'med en it, und applied to the upper roller C by means of the bars or clamp-frame, substantially as and for the purpose described.
The lateral adjustable creasing-wheel F, on the upper roller-shaft, operntingirnh the flanged roller G, substantially as described f'or the purposes specied..
4. The Combination and arrangement of two rolle-rs of equal or unequal diameter, and connected by gears of equal or unequal diameter with the creasing-wheel and flanged roller G, substantially as und for the purposes set forth.
C. C. BELLOWS.
