Description

)UNITED STATES PATENT .IQFICE f J'AMnsms'rEvENs, or EAST DURHAM, NE W'ro'RK.A
IMPROVEMENT .IVN -MANuaE-SPREADERS.
' spcification forming pm ,f Letters Patent No. 34,790, dated Mm1i25,1s62; Reissue N0..1.1n9,y amd January 5, 1864.
To all whom it lmay. concern Be it known' that I, J Mus H. STEVENS, of East Durham, in the county of Greene and State'of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Machines for Spreading Manure and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, und exact descriptionthe'reof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, mn kin g a part of this specil Iication, in whichthe field, ns desircd;.or,byusing a handcrank, the contents may be deposited in one -or' several heaps.A 'f
` i '17o enable others skilled in the art to full understand and constructmy invention, I wi l proceed to describe it.
A A represent the sides of a common wago'u-body, supported in the usual manner ppon wheels- B .B represent o series of small rollers, prolvided' with journals at suchend, 'which are fit- Y ted in the sides ofthe wagon-body.
Q is an endless belt, composed of slats itted closely together and attached to flexible hands la, encircling the series of rollers B B. It may consist wholly of leather, cloth, or other mate- I i -I P are strips oi' .wood fastened on the inner sidesuof the wagon-body, and covering the ends of the slats forming the bed, for the purpose of'preventing manur'efrom workingin between 'the side boards of the wagon and the slats,
andfelog'ging the rollers-and .the exible bed.
D D represent four buckets secured upon shef't'f'E, whiehiis .journaled 'in boxes at each 1 eid in' the framing F, which is supported from e' sides of the wagon-body. AO'ue endof the ft- E projects'through its box, and -is prof .'vickgl with four radial arms, e, corresponding :with the lnln A oflmcketsJ K'G. Hf I are. con aotingftubes attachedto the V lower-portion ofthe framing F, immediately under the Vback end of the-endless wagon-bed. J is a wiudlassshaft journaiedin the sides ot the wagon -body a sufficient distance behind the endless bed to allow the contents of the wagon in unloading -to pass between it and the bed.
.lfhis shaft receives motion from the wagon-- wheel N through the mediumof a band, c, passing overthe pulley M on the said shaft, and
around the hub of the wheel; or it may be con iiected by gearing. A rope or chain, h,- attached tothe windlass-shaft, connects with the forward end of the endless bed C, and, as the machine is drawn over the field, imparts a retrograde motion thereto. The end of the shaft J, upon which the pulley (or band-wheel) is secured,
rests in a lengthened horizontal mortse, (seen in vdotted-lines,) lin the side, A, and being connected by a rod, t", to the'foot-lcver -L at the forr ward end of the wagon-box, can be moved backward and forward to tighten or loosen the belt driving the windla-ss-shaft, and thus regulate the'nloveinentof the endless bed. l
0n the'iunerside ofthe wheel O are a nun'.-
ber of laterally-projecting pins, d, which,.as .the wheel revolves, engage withtheradial arms e of the buckets, and impart an intermittent motion thereto.'- The'spring f, attached to the wagon-body, serves'to hold one of the buckets D-in n position to receive the falling contents of the wagon while passing from one row of hills to another. As the wagon is drawn over the field, the endless bed being connected tothe windlas's-shaft, either by gearin g or by a cord, as sho wn, theioad is graduallycarriedv towardthe rear endofthe wagon,
where it falls onto the bucket held in position by the. spring until one-of the pins in the wheel 10; striking against one ofthe radial arms 6,.
forccs'the bucket past the spring, precipitat- `ing the contents of the bucket into the conducting-tubes, from whence it 'passes into the hills. At the same time another bucket is brought in position to receive the falling manure. 'l
When it is desired to use und the manure allowed to .faH from the endless bed directly into the conducting-tubes. Hence, as the wagon progresses over the field,
Vthere being three tubes, the manure will he deposited 'nthree continuous rows.
.When it is desired to use the machine for the machine for` manurng in the drill, the buckets areremoved moved, when the manure, as the wa onpretop dressing, the conducting-tubes arilso reg'resses, will fall and be'ieft scattered q ou the eld.
For unlcadingmanure or other thin in one,
- two, or several heaps, as desired, th connections oi' the windlass-shaft and wagPn-wheei are also'reinoved, when (the Wagon being at rest) the contents, or any desired pa thereof, may be turned olf by the ,use of a hand-crank attached to one end ofthe windlass-shaft J; or
. the band-wheel M maybe used aahandcrank, a pin or handle being inser ed in its outside near the ange. By varying the size .of the lsaid band-wheel or of the wndlassshaft. a. greater or less number of loiuds to the acre may be put vupon -the field.
By detachng the distributing apparatus the wagon can be used for all the purposes of an ordinary wagon or the essential parts ot' the machine can be used upon a common wagon. y
iWhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Paten-t, is o "l, The arrangement of the endless flexible i bed C, windlassshaft J, and its connections, in combination with the buckets I), sp ng f, and conductingtubes G1R I, the whole combined and operatingi-n the manner and for the ,purpose described. v
2. The arrangement of the endless iexible bed C, rollers B B, sides A, conducting-tubes G H Land framing F, the whole ,supported upon wheels and operatingin the manner-and for the purpose described.
3. The arrangement of the endless flexible bed C in connection with wndlass-sh'aft and Wheel N. operating inthe manner and fox- "v4 the purpose described. 4. The arrangement of `the endless flexible bed G in connectionwith windlassshaft J and hand-crank, constructed and operating substantially in the manner and I'or'the purpose described.
