UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM C. IIUSS, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
DESIGN FOR A WALL-FIXTURE FOR COUNTERS.
SPECIFICATIDN forming part of Design No. 22,591, dated July 4, 1893.
Application led June 3, 1893. Serial No. 476,524. Term of patent 3% years .To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. Huss, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, haveinvented acertain new and useful Design for Wall-Fixtures for Counters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a new design for wall fixtures for counters. Its distinguishing features are the short massive columns supporting arches which, together with the columns form deep alcoves above the sideboard portion, the projecting pilasters above the arches, immediately over the columns, Which extend above the cornice and terminate in carved iinials, and the ornamention arranged as shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a portion of the counter shown in front elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same taken through the center of one of the arches.
The only distinguishing feature of the sideboard portion A, is the broad heavy pilasters a,surmounted by a substantially rectanguiar abacus a', which forms both the abacus of the pilaster and extends across the top of the sideboard, apparently forming the base of the heavy columns B. The base proper of the columns B is the beaded portion b. The columns are surmounted by heavy carved capitals b', which are of the same material of which the base and body of the sideboard are formed. The shaft b2 of the column is, however, formed of different material, preferably metal, and decorated with groups of figures as shown. From the abacus of the capitals b of the columns spring arches C, the inner curved portions of the arches extending back from near the frontline of the abacus and the mirrors or reflecting panels D are set in the back upright of the fixture, the columns and arches, from front view, apparently framing the mirrors. The inner and outer curved edges of the arches are ornamented with foliage, leaving a plain surface between the ornamental molded portions. From the space between the upper curve of the arches and at each end of the sideboard, spring rectangularpilasters E, which terminate in enriched corbels e at. the bottom, and the tops are formed rounding and enriched with foliage and masks, as seen at e. The cornice F,which is a heavy molding, extends in a straight line across the whole of the sideboard, between the pilasters E and the space in the frieze below the cornice. Upon each side of the pilasters E are enriched ornamental spandrels e2, which, for contrast, are preferably of the same color and material as the shaft of the columns B. The under curved portion of the arch C is formed in transverse staves, ol rounded ribs, c, relieved by five or more ornamental patera of brass or other material that will contrast with the material of the arch, and from the center of this, if desired, illuminating jets may spring to refiect whatever may bein front of the panels D. The base or foot of the arches, between the corbels e and the abacus of the capitals b', is enriched by ornaments e3 of carved foliage, and the fronts of the pilasters E, between the iinials and corbels are valso enriched by raised ornaments of carved foliage. I have also shown the end alcove fitted with a frame work of reflecting surfaces d, divided by plain upright shafts with carved capitals, and the space within the curve of the arch decorated with open scroll foliage, and where the counter has a number of alcoves formed by the columns and arches, one of these decorated alcoves may be used at each end to relieve the monotony, but the end alcove may be formed, same as the others or intermediate ones, decorated with open scroll work, as shown at the left of Fig. 1, without varying the general effect of the design. What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The design for a wall fixture for counters, substantially as shown and described.
