WITNESSES: MJIEZZENTOE 3/ lm s/hzv f,%e.
UNITED STAT ES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY HOOK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO PARTRIDGE & RICHARDSON, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR GIMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 22,246, dated February 28, 1893.
Application filed January 25, 1893' Serial No. 459,741- Term of patent 3% years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY HOOK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and original Design for Gimp for Dress-Trimmings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My design as illustrated in the accompanying drawing comprises a series of flat opencentered coils a, of cord, arranged with the individual coils at selected distances apart, upon a band, 1), of breadth inferior to the diameter of the coils,in connection wit-h apair of braids or ribbons, of d, of appropriate material, and, also, with a pair of cords extending respectively along the respective opposite edges of the gimp as an entirety and secured to it in such manner as to form an edge or selvage composite of a series of semi-circular loops or festoons ff within each of which is disposed a convolute e, of cord. From an inspection of the drawing it will be observed that the coils a, band 19, and convolutes e, are formed from a single continuous cord, which, after being laid in transverse uniform folds to form a section of the band I) of a required length, and being secured by a binding thread, is thereupon laid in a spiral arrangement to form a flat coil having an open center, the portionsof the layers of cord of the coil in the region of one side of its body existing in the same plane as the adjoining section of the band, to constitute in effect a continuation of said band, while the remaining portions of the layers of the coil pass freely above, across the face of, and below, the body of the band. The cord of the outer layer of the coil is, at the proper point, turned away from the coil, and folded upon itself in the manner described to form a succeeding section of the band.
The ribbons or braids of textile or other suitable material are designated d d',and extend in parallelism along the respective sides of, but at some little distance from, the band 2) and behind the outer portions of the coils a.
An intermediate portion of the cord which forms, as described, the coils a and band I), is from a point about the center of each coil carried across the face of the ribbon at to the outer edge thereof, where it is transversely folded upon itself to form a convolute e, and is thence returned behind said ribbon 01 into the body of the band I) so as to be caught by its bindingthread, while another and succeeding intermediate portion of said cord is carried from said coil across the face of the ribbon d to the outer edge thereof, where it is transversely folded upon itself to form a convolute e, and is thence returned behind said ribbon 01 into the body of the band b,the result of the arrangement being that each coil of cord at lies between a pair of the convolutes 6 described.
The cordsff extend along the edges of the gimp, as stated, and are disposed in the form of semi-circular loops, each of which loops incloses a convolute. The end portions of the loops are in line and in proximity to the ribbons so that a line of stitching extending through a series of convolutes to hold them firmly together and in position, also runs through the looped portion of the cord which lies between said figures and holds said cord securely in position.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim- The design for gimp for dress trimmings herein described and illustrated.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myinventionI have hereunto signed my name this 20th day of January, A. D. 1893.
HARRY HOOK.
