Description

D99-1l AU 291 EX DESIGN.
W. M. SMITH. Coffin-Handle.
N-oDH,5 49. Patented Dec. 23,1879,
WY/uV/ff, 14575243.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
WILLIAM M. SMITH, OF WEST MERIDEN, ()ONNEGTIGUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE MERIDEN BRITANNIA COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR COFl-lN-HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Design No. 11.649, dated December 23, 1879; application filed October 2, 1879. [Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, I/VM. M. SMITH, of West Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Design for Collin-Handles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents a front view.
This invention relates to a design for coffinhandles, with special reference to the lever by which the handle-bar is hinged to the socket, and also to the tip for the bar; and the invention consists in the configuration of the parts, as shown in the accompanying illustration.
A represents the handle-bar, which may be of any shape or style. B is the lever, attached to the bar and hinged to the socket. The lever extends down in front of the bar, and gradually tapers from its lower end to a neckbead, a, with an ovolo molding, b, above the bead. From the lower end of the lever a ton gue-shaped point extends downward. The face of the lever is paneled by a plain edge and the paiiel ornamented. The ornamentation of the panel may be varied without departing from the essential feature of this part of the design, which is the configuration or shape of the lever. The tip 0 has a cavetto-shaped neck, 01, at its junction with the bar, thence gradually tapers to the point, terminating at the point in a ball, 6. Longitudinal panels are formed on the surface of the tip, with a reeded molding in the bar between the panels, all as shown in the accompanying illustration.
The lever may be used in connection with a bar having a different tip other than here shown, or the tip may be used on a bar with a diii'erent lever. The design is therefore not to be understood as combining this particular lever with this particular tip.
I claim 1. The design for coffin-handle, consisting of the lever gradually tapering from its lower end to a neck-molding, a b, with a tongueshaped tip extending downward fromits lower end, as shown in the accompanying illustration.
2. The design for coffin-handle, consisting of the tip for the bar, gradually tapering from the neck toward the point and terminating in the ball 6, with longitudinal panels in the surface of the tip and ornamented bars between the panels, as shown in the accompanying illustration.
WILLIAM M. SMITH.
