Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
WILLIAM MCOALLUM, OF YONKERS, ASSIGNOR TO BIGELOW CARPET COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Y oEs|cN FOR CARPETS.
Specification forming part of Design No. 10,543, dated March 19, 1878 application filed March 9, 1878.
[Term of patent 3i years] To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MGGALLUM, of Yonkers, county of Westchester, and State of New York, have invented a new and original Design for a Carpet, of which the following is a specification:
The accompanying photographic illustration represents a face view of my new design for a carpet.
This invention relates to a new pattern for carpets, oil-cloths, and similar fabrics, and for the bordersthereof.
It consists in the new arrangement and ornamentation of figures hereinafter described.
In the photographic illustration, the letter A represents the body of the newly-designed carpet, and B its border. The carpet Ais, by a series of longitudinal and transverse lines,
l ww y y, divided into square sections a c, each section being subdivided by a diagonal line into two right-angled triangles, b b, as clearly shown. The eight triangles which compose four contiguous squares have differently-ornamented groundwork, some having oral ornamentations, and others being composed of geometrical figures, as shown.
The carpet is further ornamented by various figures placed upon the sectional lines and in the triangles above referred to. Thus, e e are smaller squares placed at alternate intersecting points of the lines w x y y, and subdivided each into four ornamental panels, as shown. The squares e e are arranged close to circles ff, in such manner that each square covers one quarter of the circle. Small rosettes g g are placed at other intersecting points of the line x ao y y. h h are shield-like ornaments placed over the transverse lines y, and having tufts at their convex ends. Orescents z', starlj, heart-shaped and T-shaped ornaments k and l are also contained on'the carpet.
The border B is, similar tothe body of the carpet A, divided into triangles, but near its inner edge is a rovi7 of rosettes, m m, as shown. The outer edge ofthe border B contains stars and other smaller ornaments.
The body of the border contains also squares e, circles f, shields hf, and other figures harmonizing with those on the carpet A.
l claim- 1. The design for a carpet having a series ofsquares, a a, divided into triangles b b, substantially as shown.
2. The design for a carpet containing the squares e and circles f arranged in connection With each other, substantially as shown.
3. The design for a carpet having the crescents t' and stars j, substantially as shown.
4. The design for a carpet containing the heart-shaped ornaments k and T-shaped ornaments l, substantially as shown.
5. The design for the border B, which is divided into triangular sections, substantially as shown.
6. The design for the border B, having the row of rosettes 'm m, in connection with the triangular iigures substantially as shown.
ILLIAM MGOALLUM.
