To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THEODOR ENGSTRAND, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Dansville, in the county of Livingston and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Beds, Chairs, and Tables, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to household furniture and more particularly to a combined bed, chair and table.

The object of the invention is to provide a combined article of furniture, the construction of which is such that it may be extended to form a bed, and readily converted into a chair or used as a combined table and chair.

A further object is to provide an article of furniture of simple and durable construction, the arrangement of the parts of which is such that the device may be compactly folded for transportation or storage.

A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efliciency.

Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my article of furniture, showing the same extended to form a bed; Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the device converted into a combined table and bench or chair; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a perspective view, showing the device folded to form a chain; Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 1; Fig. 7 is a detail perspective View of a portion of the device, showing the manner of supporting the arms of the table on one of the cross bars of the lazy tongs; Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the head rest, showing the construction of the locking member and sliding bar.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The improved device forming the subject matter of the present invention comprises an inclined supporting frame 5 including spaced side bars connected by relatively stationary and movable transverse bars 6 and 7 and a top bar 8, as shown.

Pivotally connected at 9 with the side bars of the main frame 5, are lazy tongs, the intersecting levers 11 of which are of equal height and connected by transverse rounds 12. The intermediate bar 7 is pivotally mounted between the side bars of the supporting frame 5 and secured to said transverse bar, are a plurality of pivotally connected sections 13, 14 and 15, each section being formed of longitudinally disposed bars 16 spaced apart and interposed between and pivotally connected with the bars of an adjacent section.

The longitudinal bars 16 of the outer section 15, are adapted to fit between the longitudinal bars of the intermediate section 14.. so as to form a smooth upper surface, constituting a table 17. The outerends of the longitudinal bars of the section 15, are con nected by a transverse bar 18 adapted to bear against the upper surface of the bars of the intermediate section 14: when said section is folded within the outer section,

as best shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.

The terminal transverse bar 12 is pivotally mounted between the adjacent levers of the lazy tongs and secured to said transverse bar, is an auxiliary section 19 formed of relatively short stationary bars 20 and movable bars 21, the movable bars 21 being pivotally connected to the free ends of the stationary bars 20 and adapted, when folded between the bars 20, to form a smooth upper surface constituting a bench or seat, and when folded between the bars of the outer section 15 to form a continuation of the bottom of the bed, as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings.

The transverse bar 7 of the main supporting frame 5, is preferably disposed in a plane slightly above the uppenconnecting bars 12 of the lazy tongs so that when the sections 13, let and 15 are moved to extended position to form the bottom of the bed, the section 13 will be arranged at a slight angle or inclination with respect to the section 14, and thus form in effect a head rest.

The connecting bar 12 of the lazy tongs is rigidly secured thereto and is provided at its opposite ends with terminal recesses 22 adapted to accommodate suitable supporting arms 23 pivotally mounted at 24 on the intermediate section 14 at its point of attachment to the outer section 15, said supporting arms 23 being provided with shoulders 25 adapted to bear against the upper face of the bar 12 for supporting the sections 14 and 15 in a horizontal position when said sections are folded one within the other to form a table, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.

Secured to the inner faces of some of the levers 11 forming the lazy tongs, are cleats 26 having their lower faces inclined and adapted to bear against the adjacent longitudinal edges of the supporting arms 23 to assist in preventing accidental displacement of said arms.

The upper portions of two of the levers comprising one of the lazy tongs, are cutaway, as indicated at 27, there being a link 28 pivotally mounted at 29 on one of the short levers of the adjacent lazy tongs and provided with a slot adapted to receive a pivot pin 30 mounted on the other short lever, thus to assist in guiding the lazy tongs when the latter are moved to extended and contracted position, and also to limit the outward or extensible movement of both sets of lazy tongs.

Pivotally mounted on the rear end of the intermediate section 14, are looking rods 31, the free ends of which are provided with hooks 32 adapted to engage suitable eyes 33 fastened to the inner faces of the side bars constituting the main frame 5, so as to assist in holding the table in a horizontal position.

In using the device as a bed, the support ing frame 5 is held in the hand and the outer ends of the lazy tongs moved longitudinally to the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, after which the sections 13, 14 and 15 are moved to extended position with their lower faces resting on the upper transverse bars 12 and 12. The movable bars 21 of the auxiliary section 20 are then swung laterally on their pivotal axes and fitted between the longitudinal bars of the outer section 15, thus forming a smooth upper surface for a mattress or the like. When the device is used as a combined table and seat, the longitudinal bars com prising the outer section 15 are folded between the longitudinal bars comprising the adjacent section 14 and said sections swung upwardly and. laterally to the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, after which the arms 23 are swung downwardly within the seating recesses or notches 22 with their lower ends bearing against the cleats 26, the hooked ends of the rods 31 being subse quently passed through the eyes 33 to assist in holding the table in a horizontal position. After the table has been adjusted in this manner, the movable bars 21 of the auxiliary section 20, are folded within the stationary bars of said section to form a seat, and the lazy tongs moved longitudinally in the direction of the main frame 5, until the seat is adjusted to the desired position with relation to the table, thus permitting the device to be used as a combined table and seat or bench.

W hen the device is to be used as a chair, the sections 14 and 15 are folded one within the other and said sections, together with the Slidably mounted for vertical movement on the main frame 5, is a head rest designed to be used in connection w1th the device when the latter is converted into a chair,

said head rest comprising a substantially rectangular frame 34 having its side walls slidably mounted in suitable openings 35 formed in the upper connecting barS of said frame and provided with locking notches or kerfs 36 adapted to receive spring locking members 37 mounted on the bar 8 for holding the frame or head rest 34 in elevated position. The inner faces of the side bars of the head rest or frame 34 are provided with shoulders 38 ada ted to engage and form a stop for a movable partition 39, said partition being adapted to rest upon the upper surface of the bar 8 of the main frame when the head rest is in lowered position.

Having thus described the invention,what is claimed as new is:

1. A device of the class described including an end frame, lazy tongs connected with the end frame and movable to extended position to form the sides of a bed, a plurality of pivotally connected sections carried by the end frame, one of said sections being foldable within the other to form a table, and supporting arms pivotally mounted on one of the sections and adapted to support the table in a horizontal position.

2. A device of the class described including an end frame, lazy tongs carried by the end frame and connected by transverse bars, one of which is provided with oppositely disposed seating recesses, a plurality of pivotally connected sections mounted on the end frame, one of which is foldable within the adjacent section to form a table, and supporting arms pivotally connected with one of the sections and'adapted to extend within the seating recesses, said supporting arms being provided with shoulders for con tact with the recessed bar, thereby to support the table in a horizontal position.

3. A device of the class described including an inclined end frame, lazy tongs carried by the end frame and connected by transverse bars, a plurality of pivotally connected sections mounted on the inclined end frame, one of said sections being movable to folded position within the other to form a table, means carried by one of the sections for supporting the table in a horizontal position, and an end section carried by and movable with the lazy tongs and constituting a seat.

A device of the classdescribed including an inclined end frame, lazy tongs carried by the end frame and connected by transverse bars, cleats secured to some of the levers comprising the lazy tongs and having inclined faces, one of the transverse bars being provided with seating recesses, a plurality of pivotally connected sections movable to extended position in engagement with the transverse connecting bars, one of said sections being pivotally mounted on the inclined frame and another of said sections foldable Within an adjacent section to form a table, supporting arms carried by one of the sections and adapted to extend within the seating recesses for engagement with the inclined faces of the cleats, and an end section carried by and. movable with the lazy tongs, said end section c0-acting with the table to form a chair.

5. A device of the class described including an inclined end frame having openings formed therein, a head rest slidably mounted within the openings and adjustable vertically of the end frame, lazy tongs carried by the end frame and connected by transverse bars, a plurality of pivotally connected sections connected with the frame, two of said sections being foldable one Within the other to form the back portion of a chair, and an end section carried by and movable with the lazy tongs, said end section being adapted to bear against the back portion of the chair to form the bottom or seat for the chair.

6. A device of the class described including an end frame, lazy tongs carried by the end frame and movable to extended position, said lazy tongs being connected by transverse bars, a movable transverse bar forming a part of the end frame, a. plurality of pivotally connected sections connected with the movable transverse bar, one of said sections being movable within the other and adapted to be swung upwardly to form a table, means connected with one end of the table for supporting the latter in a horizontal position, and locking members pivotally connected with one of the sections and adapted to engage the end frame for supporting the other end of said table in a horizontal position.
