a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elgin, in the county of Kane and h tate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lhlechnnisinttor Cutting Wrappers from Strips, (iiase lilo. 2;) and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters oi reference I marked thereon, which form a portof this specifihtion.
This invention relates to improvements in paper feeding and cutting devices forcatting individual Wrappers or other short sections from a continuous strip of paper or like material.
The invention is herein shown as designed for use in connection with a Wrapping inachine for Wrapping chewing gum and like thin cakes or sticks of material, such, for instance, as that shown in my prior United States Letters Patent, Number 890,953, granted June 16th, 1908, but may be e1nployed Wherever it is desired to cut from a. continuous strip a SUCCQSE-JliG SQIlQS of short sections or Wrappers.
Among the objects oithe invention is to provide a feeding cutting mechanism which is exceedingly simple in its const ue-- tion and efiicient and positive in operation, and to otherwise improve devices having the general characteristics herein set forth for the above and other uses. The invention consists of the nastiest; hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The rollers are fixed to shafts 38, 89, respectively, which extend trgnsversely'across the fixed and movable aws and are mounted in bearings carried by the end members of said jaws. Said shafts are provided at their ends, at one side of the machines, with meshing pinions-40, 4-1 by which one shaft is driven from the other, and one of the shafts, thev shaft'38 as herein shown, may be driven in any suitable manner from the machine, as for instance, through the medium of a pulley 42. Located below the cutting knives, between the same and the wrapper receiving recess 14, are parallel coacting wrapper delivery rollers 43,- 44 that are fixed to shafts 45, 46 which extend transversely across the machine and are rotatively mounted in bearings carried'by the supporting base 20 of the fixed jaw. One of the shafts, the shaft 46 as herein shown, is adapted to be driven-from the shaft 38 of the strip feeding rollers by means of meshing gear wheels 48, 49 fixed to the shafts 38 and 46 respectively. The shaft 45 is driven from the shaft 46by intermeshing pinions 46 fixed to said shafts at one side of the mechanism.

A feature of my invention resides in the provision of means for swinging the movable jaw toward and from the stationaryjaw to actuate the cutting knives in timed relation to the feeding movement of the strip a from which the wrappers are cut, so arranged that the feeding movement of the strip occurs when the knives. are separated and is arrested when the knives are brought together in cutting relation; the intermittent feeding movement of the strip and the cutting of the wrappers from the lower end thereof being alternately eifected. The construction herein shown for effecting this result is made as follows: One of the strip feeding rollers, to wit, the roller 36, as herein shown, is eccentric with respect to the axis of rotation of its shaft 89, while the other roller 35 is eccentric. The pinion 41 of the shaft of the eccentricroller is likewise eccentric and is arranged with its eccentric portion on the same side of the shaft is the eccentric portion of the roller. \Vhen the highest portion of the pinion 41 meshes with the mating pinion 40', therefore, the lower end of the swinging jaw will be moved outwardly and the cutting knives will be separated from each other as shown in Fig. 1, so that. at this time the strip of paper is free to pass between the cutting edges of the knives. The highest portion of the eccentric strip feed roller 36 is at this time between its shaft and the mating roller 35 so as to coact with the, latter'roller to feed or advance the strip between said rollers when the knives are so separated, as-will be apparent from an inspection of Figs. 1 and 2. When the lowest part of the eccentric pinion meshes with its mating pinion the swinging jaw is moved inwardly, under the force of a suitable actuating device, as a spring or weight, and when said aw swings inwardly the movable knife cooperates with the stationary knife to cut from the strip of paper a length or section that has been fed downwardly between the cutting knives at the time the highest part of the roller 36 cooperates with the roller 35. In order to interrupt the feed of the strip at thetime the knives are cooperating to cut a section or wrapper therefrom, the said eccentric feed reller is lowered or depressed in a part of its circumference, as indicated at 36. 6. Mechanism for feeding a strip and cut ting sections from the advance end thereof,
. comprising a fixed and a movable jaw, co-
operating knives carried by said jaws, strip feeding means carried by said jaws embracing an eccentric roller carried by one of said jaws, and an eccentric pinion fixed to the shaft of said eccentric roller for rotating the same andforeontrolling the cutting movement of said ':i1ives, said eccentric roller being provided throughout a portion of its circumference with a .clearance depression for the purpose set forth.

Mechanism for feeding a strip and cutting sections from the advance end thereof, comprising a fixed and a movable jaw,.co' operating knives carried by said jaws, strip feeding means carried by said jaws embrac ing an eccentric roller carried by one of said jaws, an eccentric pinion fixed to the shaft of said eccentric roller for rotating the same and for moving one of the knives away from the other and a spring acting in opposition to the eccentric pinion for moving the mov able knife into cutting relation to the other knife.

Mechanism for feeding a strip and cutting sections from the advance end'thereof comprising, two feed rollers between which the strip is fed and fixed to shafts movable one toward and from the other, intermeshing pinions fixed to the shafts of said rollers one'of which is an'eccentric pinion, and cutfeed rollers between which the strip is fed and fixed to shafts, one of which is rotatively mounted in thefixed 'jaw and the other in the swinging jaw, one of said feed rollers being eccentric, and pinions on the shafts of said rollers one of which is eccentric, and cutting knives one of which is mounted. on the fixed jaw and the other of which is carried by the movable jaw.

Mechanism for feeding a strip and cutting sections from the advance end thereof, comprising a fixed and a movable jaw, two feed rollers between'which the strip is fed and fixed to shafts, one of which is rotatively mounted in the fixed jaw and the other in the swinging jaw, one of said feed rollers being eccentric, pinions on the shafts of said rollers one of which is eccentric, and cutting knives one of which is mounted on the fixed jaw and the other of which is carried by the movable jaw, and a springtending to press said jaws together.

Mechanism for feeding a strip and cutting sections from the advance end thereof, comprising a fixed and a movable jaw, two feed rollers between which the strip is fed and fixed to shafts which are rotatively mounted in said jaws, intermeshing pinions on said shafts, one of said feed rollers bein eccentric and the pinion on the shaft of sai latter roller being also eccentric and cutting knives one of which is mounted on the fixed jaw and the other of which is carried by the I movable jaw, one of said feed rollers being,
provided in its circumference with a clearance depression for the purpose set forth.
12. Mechanism for feeding a strip and cutting sections from the advance end thereof, comprising a fixedand a movable jaw, cooperating strip feed rollers carried one by each jaw between which the strip is fed, means for rotating said rollers arranged to control the movement of the jaws toward and from each other, a knife carried by the fixed jaw below said rollers and a cooperating knife pivoted to the movable jaw and having means for holding it yieldingly' pressed against the fixed knife.
13. Mechanism for feeding a strip and cutting sections from the advance end thereof, comprising a fixed and a movable jaw, cooperating strip feed rollers carried one by each jaw between which the strip is fed,
means for rotating said rollers arranged to control the movement of the jaws toward and from each other, a knife carried by the fixed jaw below said rollers, acooperating knife pivoted at its ends to the movable jaw and spring pressed links pivoted to the ends of the movable knife betweenv its cutting iae edge and its pivotal connection with the movable jaw for holding the movable'knife yieldingly pressed against the fixed knife.
14. Mechanism for feeding a strip and cutting sections from the advance end thereof, comprising a fixed and a swinging jaw, cooperating strip feed rollers carried one i by each jaw and between which the strip is fed, a knife carried by said fixed jaw below the rollers, and a coacting ltnife carried by the movable jaw, one of said knives being provided at its ends with arms which extend toward the other knife and upwardly HARRY YARRING'ION ARMSTRONG.
