DOOR-CHECK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 18, 1911.
Application filed October 15, 1909. Serial No. 522,867.
Be it known that l, Josnrii M. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bay City, in the county of Matagorda and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door checks, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a reliable and eflicient device which will automatically hold the door at any point within the radius of its swing whenever the door knob has been release by the hand of the operator.
Another object of the invention is to provide a door check connected to and operated by the movement of the door knob, so that when the door knob is turned, the check is released; and when the knob is released the door check is operated to stop the door at any point within the limit of its swing.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanyingdrawing, in which,
Figure 1. is a front elevation of a portion of the door and door frame having a door check secured thereto, said door check being made in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the door check removed from the door. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one member of the door check. Fig. 1 is a detail perspective view of the other member, or bolt casing, of the door check. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the bolt.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a door frame, and 2 is a door connected to the frame by hinges in the usual or any preferred manner.
The door knob 3 and the lock throu 11 which said door knob extends may be of tie usual or any suitable construction having a squared spindle A to which the knobs upon the opposite sides of the door are connected. The knob spindle A extends through a squared opening in a lever 6 provided with oppositely extended lugs 7 and curved cam surfaces 8, as shown in Fig. 1.
Connected to a door frame at a point nearly central to the height thereof is a base member 9, said base member being secured to the door frame by means of screws 10. A substantially circular head 11 provided with longitudinally extending grooves 12 on the periphery thereof is formed on the base member 9, said head having an open ing 13 extending centrally therethrough. The other member 14 forms a bolt casing and is provided with spaced rounded lugs 15 provided with alined apertures 16. A pintle 17 extends through the apertures 16 and through the opening 13 in the head 11. The bolt casing 1 1 is provided with a longitudinal recess 18 and cross bars 19 preferably seated in dovetailed recesses 20. A lug 21 extends inwardly from the recess 18-, and a recess 22 is formed in the casing at one side of said lug.
A bolt 23 is mounted in the casing, said bolt having an extended portion 241 disposed between the cross bars 19 of the casing. A spring 25 is disposed in the recess 22 and bears at one of its ends against a shoulder 26 formed on the bolt, while the opposite end bears against a shoulder 27 formed on the casing. The bolt has a finger 28 adapted to engage any one of the grooves 12 in the head 11. A loop or eye 29 on the bolt has connected to it a rod or wire 30. Connected to the opposite end of the Wire is a yoke 31 slidably and pivotally connected to the door by means of a screw 32 extending through a slot 33 in said yoke. Oppositely disposed arms 3 1 are formed on the yoke, and these arms each have an inwardly extending lug 35 which engages the oppositely extending lugs 7 of the lever 6. The member or casing 1A is secured to the door by means of screws 36.
The operation of my invention may be briefly described as follows :VVhen the knob 3 is turned in either direction, the lever 6 is moved to throw one of the lugs 7 against one of the lugs 35 to move the yoke 31, the wire or rod 30 and the bolt 23 to remove the finger 28 from one of the grooves 12 in the head. When the door is swung open as far as it is desired, the knob is released and the spring 25 projects the bolt to engage the finger 28 in one of the grooves 12, thus holding the door wherever it is released. When the door is closed it is held locked by the bolt and a person upon either side of the door may operate the device.
My invention is particularly desirable for glass doors which are liable to slam and be come broken. A door fitted with my door check will remain at any position when the knob is released.
I claim A door check comprising tWo leaves adapted to be connected respectively to a door and its frame, a pintle pivotally uniting said leaves, a hub formed on one of said leaves and having a plurality of notches spaced apart, the other of said leaves having a longitudinal channel and a plurality of recesses, a bolt slidably mounted in said channel and adapted to engage any one of said notches, means mounted in said recesses to hold the bolt against displacement, said bolt and the leaf in which it is mounted each having a socket, a spring seated in said sockets and normally acting to project the said bolt toward said notches, and means for opera tively connecting said bolt with a knob pintle.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
