means for holding the locking bolt in an unlocked position in order to allow the sash is locked into an inoperative position by siInto move freely within the frame.
Another object of my invention is to improve the general construction of the sash look so as to provide a lock which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction and one in which'the bolt is so mounted that the same will be held in its proper position without any danger of the same working loose. in any way.
A still furtherzobject of my invention is to provide a -locking bolt with a bifurcated inner end which is pivotally mounted a locking member which is adapted to be swung..-upwardly so as to engage thecasing when the same is moved into an unlocked position in order to hold the same out of engagement with the window frame. I
Still another'object of my invention is to provide a sash lock in which the sliding bolt extends inwardly through the side bar of the sash into a convenient posit-ion for operating the same, the locking'member being so mounted in the bolt that when the bolt 'ply pressing upwardly on the end of the lockf ng member the bolt will be released so as tb lock the sash.
With these objects in View, my invention g consists in the nevel features of construction -spective view of my improved lock detached.
Fig; 3 is a vertical section through the same.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section.
Referring to the drawing A indicates a window frame and B a sash mounted therein, the above description being given so ereinafter described, pointed out in the" "claim and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which?- that the operation of my improved lock can be readily understood.
In carrying out my improved invention, I employ a casing C which is adapted to be arranged within a recess formed in the edge of the side bar of the sash B, said recess having a bore communicating therewith which extends out through the side bar as clearly shown and adapted to receive the looking belt of my improved look as will be hereinafter fully described. The casing G is provided with an open side which is closed by a plate K secured to the casing by screws or the like in .order that the same can be removed to facilitate the insert-ion of thelocking members which will be hereinafter fully described. A face plate D is formedintegral with the casing of a greater length than the casing, the ends of which extend out above and below the same and have openings formed therein through which screws are adapted to pass for securing the same within the recess ,of the sash,
it of course being understood that the face plate is countersunk in the edge of the sash. The faceplate Dis provided with a square opening through which extends a substantially square locking bolt E which is mounted in a .groove F formed in one side of the casing and extends out through'the rear end through an opening formed therein which communicates with the bore formed in the sash and said bolt is of such a length that it will exend out beyond the inner edge of the side. bar of the casing at such a distance that it can be readily grasped by the fingers so as to operate the same. For normally holding the sliding bolt E outwardly so that it will engage the window frame or be forced into a recess formed therein, I provide a spring G which is substantially U- shaped having a coil G which is arranged over a stud pin H extending inwardly from one ofthe sides of the casing, said spring being provided with legs of different lengths, the longer leg extending through a slot E formed in the bolt so that the tend ency of the spring is to force the bolt outwardly at all times.
For locking the bolt E against the tension of the spring G so that the same will be out of engagement with the frame, I bifurcate the inner end of the bolt as clearly shown at I and in said bifurcation I mount a pivoted locking member J which is provided with a head J extending outwardly beyond the end of the bolt as clearly shown, and by, drawingidown on thehea'd J of the locking member when thebolt is drawn inwardly, the notched end oof the locking member will be forced outwardly so that when the bolt is'released'it will engage the edge of the casing adjacent the opening through which the bolt extends, it of course being understood that the bore in which the bolt slides is of such a sizethat it will allow the locking member to move upwardly. By
notching'the inner end of the locking memher the upward and downward movement of the same islimited as the inward movement "of the locking bolt is limited by the spring insuch a manner that it is impossible to draw. the bolt inwardly beyond the end-of the locking member and by this arrangement when the locking member is'forced upwardly the reduced portion of the locking member is brought into engagement with the back of the casing so as to limit the upward movement of the same. ll hen it is desired to release the bolt so as to allow I the same to be thrown inwardly by the spring in order to lock the sash in the desired position, by simply pressing upwardly on the head J the locking member J will be thrown out of engagementor down into the bifurcation of the bolt so as to allow the spring to force the bolt inwardly.
-From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a sash lock which is provided with a sliding spring actuated bolt having means-for locking the bolt within the casing 'againstthe tension of the spring so as to hold 11165211116 out of engagement with the frame of the window in order to allow the sashto move freely up and down within the casing,- said locking member-being. so mounted within the bolt that in order to releasefthe same, it is only necessary to press upwardly on the head of the locking member. V
Having-thus fully described my invention,-what -I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,- is:
ortiona U sha Jed s rin ,havirwxa coil 7 b D portion arranged over said stud pin, and having one of lts ends extending into the bifurcation of said bolt, the walls of said bolt being a ertureduat its end iand a looking member J pivota'lly moun d on a pin arranged in said apertures having a head pprtlon and provided with a "notched -end adapted to co-act with the end of said casing. lVARREN-o B, l/VEAVER.
