Description

dhd-ted (gitane @met @twine Letters Patent N 99,664, dated February 8, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORSETS.
The' Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
.'l'o all whom t'tfmay concern Be it known that I, THOMAS S. GILBERT, of LBirmingham, in thecounty of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connectionwitll the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent in- Figure 1, a View of the corset spread;
Figure 2, a transverse section ot' one of the., stays of which the corset is'formed; and in Figure 3, a rear View of the front edge, showing the manner of inserting the steels.
This invention relates to an improvement in the manufacture of corsets, whereby they are made open and adjustable through all the parts; and
The invention consists in the construction ofthe corset by inserting the bones in pockets independent each of th'e other, so as to form a succession of stays, and each stay laced to the next, leaving an open space between each two ofthe stays.
A are the several stays, each constructed as shown enlarged in iig.. 2.
A single wire, ot' steel or other suitable metal, nruns through a pocket, B, in the centre, and another wire at each edge through a pocket, C C; the said pockets being formed from fabric in any convenient manner, so
as to leave a space, D,'betweenthe wires at the edge and centre. Into this space eyelets a are placed, and the ends of the several stays are secured by a binding, E,.at the top and b0ttom,.the stays having been previously ont to the required length.
At the rear, broader stays F F are arranged, so as to be laced together in the usual manner, and at the front, other stays G are arranged, and from the front stays G to the stays F in the rear, bands H are tixed to limit the length of the corset around the waist.
. The several stays are laced together by a lacing passing through the eyelets, as denoted in tig. 1, and may be adjusted so as to expand or contract the corset at the top or bottom, and thus dispense with the insertion of' gores and leave the corset open.
The steels in the part G, at the front, are inserted in a pocket formed by turning the fabric over and lacing through holes zZ d on the back side, as seen in fig. 3. Thus when itis desired to remove the steels, simply nnlace the pockets, and they are open for the removal of the steels without injury to the pocket.
I claim, :is my invention- A corset, col'lstructed by combining several stays A `laced together so as to form a whole, substantially in the manner herein set forth.
Witnesses: THOMAS S. GILBERT.
