ICE-CREAM-CA'N FULLER AND CBRRIEE.
specification of Letters'fiatent. lifatgrrtgd 3Q, igiils Application net January 25, 1910. seria no. 540,029.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIGMUND FRANK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Kokomo, in the county of Howard and Stateof Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice- Cream-Can Pullers and Carriers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawin- This invention relates to grappling tongs, especially adapted for lifting ice cream cans from their tubs, and the principal object of the same is to provide novel embracing arms that will have .a firm engagement about the body of a can, said arms being so connected that when the tongs are lifted, the embracing arms will automatically tighten about'the can so that slippage of the same is prevented.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above, it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical. embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a perspective viewof the improved tongs, shown opened to their widest extent, and alsoshowing by'dotted lines, a partially closed position of the tongs, Fig. is a detail fragmentary end view of one of the levers of the tongs showing the embracing arms carried thereby.
Referring to said drawings by numerals, it will be observed that the improved tongs are composed ofa pair of levers 1-2, that are held pivotal crossing relation by the pivot pin 3. Said levers are duplicates in all respects each being providedrwith an inturned operating end portion 4 that terminates in an end eye 5 in which a link 6 is mounted, the link of said levers being connected by means of the hand grip 7. -Said handgrip is preferably formed of a sheet of longitudinally rolled material "so that no sharp edges will be presented that might damage the hand of the user, the ends of said handgrips being bent upon themselves to provide eyes 8 which said links engage. It'will be obvious that the link connection between the eyes 5 of the levers l-2 and the end eyes 8 of the handgrip pi-rvide a universal connection between said handgrip and levers which permit the necessary vertical and lateral movements of said handgrip relative to said levers. The grappling end of each lever 1-2- is also inturned as indicated at 9 and has the oppositely curved pair of embracing arms 10 projecting therefrom, said arms being shaped so that they conform to the contour of a cylindrical can that is to be embraced thereby and terminate at their free end in a right angularly projecting lug 10 having a flat surface that forms a seat 11 for the bottom edge of a can when the said lugs are engaged beneath said bottom, Said lugs are arranged in converging relation so that when placed beneath the bottom of a cylindrical can, they conform to the contour of the bottom-edge of the can and thereby permit the arms 10 to be firmly engaged about the can. The lugs have their outer edges rounded and at the junction of said'rhunded edge with the seats, an abrupt sharpened point 12 is provided that may be forced within material such as ice to facilitate handling the same with the improved tongs.
In the foregoing it has been made clear that the improved tongs may be used for lifting cans or the like by engaging under their bottom, or that they may be used for handling ice by engaging the gripping points therewith, the necessary pressure oithe grappling ends of the levers being obtained by drawing the handgrip away from the upper ends of the tongs so that the levers will rock toward each other through the medium of their pivotal connection. The tongs are, however, primarily intended for lifting-ice cream cans from their tubs without the necessity of removing all the ice packed about the cans. In such use, enough of the ice is removed so that the embracing arms 10 inay be placed about opposite portions of the can, and by a lifting. movement of the handgrip, the 'levers are rocked so that said arms will tightly embrace the can, and by a continuation of the lifting movement of the said handgrip, thg can may be readily removed from the tu lVhat I claim as my invention is A device of the kind described consisting of a pair of levers crossing each other and pivotally connected together, each of said levers having at its outer end a pair of semicircular arms projecting at a right angle to said lever, each of said arms having at its J thrqugh the points of said lugs, and a hand end a lug projecting inwardly at a right grip connecting the upper end of said levers. 10
