To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT O. VANDER- cooK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of CookV and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Proof Printing-Presses, (Case A;) and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the lettersv of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates toa novel printing press adapted to take proof impressions from forms of type, linotypes, electro-types, cuts, engravings or other printable forms used with printing presses, and the invention consists of the matters hereinafter fully described and more specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention relates particularly to the type of proof printing press described in an applicatlon tiled by me on February 8th, 1909 Serial No. 476,695, and to a certain novel and improved construction by means of which the impression member, while being properly held down to its Work when traveling in a forward direction 'to make the impression, as described in said pr1or application, is lifted upon its return trip so as not to engage the faces of the type or of the proof sheet. Said impression member travels back to its initial position in this elevated plane Where it is again brought into a plane to engage the type and make proof impression in its forward movement. The press is also rovided with an improved mechanism which prevents any lpossibility of the disengagement of the segmental gear- 40,teeth from the racks in which they travel,
all of which will be more fully described in the following specification.
In the draWinUs:-Figure 1 is a vertical, longitudinal section through a proof printing press of the type described, provided with the novel features above referred to with the impression member at the end of its path after taking an impression. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same showing the im-l ression member at the middle of its path as 1t is taking an impression. Fig. 3 is a similar sectional view of the bed and of the impression member with the latter in its initial position. Fig.: 4 is a similar view showing the impression member when in active position making a proof impression. Fig. 5 is a partial vertical section through Fig. 2 on the line 5-5 thereof. Fig. 6 is a side elevatlon of the impression member showing the segmental gears by which it is operated.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the bed-plate of the machine supported on suitable legs 2, 2 and provided wlth vertically arranged, parallel side plates or brackets 3, 3 which are arranged parallel with the path of the impression-member and supportthe rails which lc)ontrol the operation of the impression mem- 1a indicates the type or other form supported on the bed and 1b the proof sheet superposed on the type (see Fig. 5).
4 indicates the impression-member which comprises a segmental, cylindric body or platen 5 of a length substantially equal to the width of the bed-plate 1, a radially arranged Web 6, preferably made integral therewith, cylindric bearing surfaces 5a at the opposite ends of the impression-member, and segmental gears 7 7 arranged at each end of and rigid y secured thereto. Mounted concentrically with the axes of said bearing surfaces and of the segmental gears are hubs 8, 8 in which are secured short stub axles or shafts 9, 9 which are provided with rollers 10, 10. The stub shafts may be made either integral with the platen or separately from it.
11, 11 indicate downwardly facing rails carriedon the brackets 3, 3.. Said rails hold the impression-member down to its work Withfthe bearing surfaces 5a, 5EL in contact with bearing rails 12, 12 formed at each side of the bed 1, and maintain the teeth of the segmental gears in contact with racks 12, 12, formed adjacent said bearing rails (see Figs. 4 and 5).

So far the machine is practically as described in the application referred to and forms no part of the present invention.
14, 14 indicate supporting rails secured to the inner faces of the bra- kets 3, 3 in a position parallel to the rails 11, 11 and located nearer the faces of said brackets than are the rails 11, 11 by a distance equal to a little more than the Width of the rollers 10, 10. Said rails are vertically spaced below the rails 11, 11 a distance slightly less than the diameters ofthe rollers 10, 10. The upper faces of said railsare curved downwardly at their ends1 as indicated at 15, 15, (see-Figs. 1 and 4).
The rollers 10,1are loosely mounted on the stub shafts 9,'-9so as toihave both rotatable and endwise movement thereon. At the forward ends of the brackets 3, 3, are arranged cam plates 17, 17 which, when the impression member reaches theend-of the path of its travel, are adapted to engage the,` inner faces of the rollers 10, 10 and with` draw them toward the brackets 3, 3 away from their contact with the downwardly facing tracks 11, 11. This movement brings them into line with the rails 14, 14, so that when the impression member is rocked forward to its initial position the rollers 10, 10 engage the downwardly curved portions 15, 15 of the supporting rails 14, 14 and travel backto their initial position on the rails 14, 14 (as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1). This raises the impression-member from a position of contact with the type, or the proof sheet snperposed thereon. At the other end of the bracket plates 3, 3 are ar-y ranged cam plates 18, 18 which are adapted, when the impression-member approaches its initial position, to engage the ends of the roller hubs and push them back into their former position ready to be engaged by the downwardly facing rails 11, ll--the downward curves of the rails at 15, 15 permitting the lowering of said rollers suflicientl for' them to be pushed under the faces o said rails. The vertical distance between the downwardly facing rails 11, 11 and the supporting rails 14, 14 is just suflicient for the impression-member to be lifted out of its engagement with the type or the proof sheet and not enough to remove the segmental gears from their active engagement with the racks 12, 12.
At each side of the forward end of the bed late are provided upstanding angular bufers 19, 19 having projecting curved ends 19a which are adapted, near the end of the movement forward of the iigipression-membcr, to engage pins 23, 23 secured to lugs 20, 2O formed on the outer faces of the segmental gears 7 7, (as indicated in Fig. 6) and hold the ends of the bearing surfaces 5, 5a in cngagementwith the bearing rails 12a, 12a as the impression-member swings on said ends as centers and after the rollers 10, 10 have passed beyond the limits of the rails 11, 11. This prevents the segmental gears from becoming disengaged from their respective racks and prevents the rack or gear teeth from being broken where the impression member is quickly rocked to the limit of its movement. To supplement the action of said buffers, lugs 24, 24 are formed at the forward ends of the rails 11, 11 and are adapted to be engaged by elastic disks 22, 22 secured to lugs 2l, 21 formed on the faces of the segmental gears 7, 7. Pins 23a, 231 are located adjacent said elastic disks in position to engage the under side of the lugs 24, 24. There are also formed on said segmental gears, lugs 30, 30 which engage under. theVA lugs 24, 24, when the impression member reaches the forward limits of its movement. The pins 23, 23 and similarly arranged elastic disks 22, 22a, and curved lugs 30, 30a perform similar functions by engagement with luds 24a, 24fand with the underside of the rai s 11, 11 and with angular buffers 19b having projecting curved arms 19c when the impression member is at the opposite limit of its movement.
25, 25 indicate elastic buffers secured in any convenient manner to the brackets, 3 in position to be engaged by the rollers'lO, 10 and receive the shock of the impressionmember at the end of its forward movement.
While' I have shown'herein certain de,- tails of construction and arrangement it is to be understood that I do not thereby limit my invention as it is apparent that they may be variously modified without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim as my invention 1. A printing press comprising a horizontal type-bed, a rocking, cylindric impressionmember, supporting rockers on the impression-member having curved bearing surfaces concentric with the bearing surface of the impression-member, upwardly facing supporting bearing surfaces formed on the bed and adapted to be engaged by the supporting rockers, rollers carried by said rockers with their axes coincident with the axes of said rockers, downwardly facing tracks supported on said bed adapted to engage the tops ofsaid rollers in one movement of said impression-member, upwardly facing tracks located below said downwardly facing tracks and supported from said bed and adapted to engage the rollers in the opposite movement of said impression-member, said upwardly facing tracks bein adapted to lift the impression-member rom its operative Y level, and means for shifting the relative positions of said rollers and of said upwardly and downwardly facing tracks.

A printing press comprisinga horizontal type-bed, a rocking impresslon-irember, supporting segmental gears secured to" said impression-member, racks mounted on said bed adapted to be engaged by said segmental gears, rollers carried by said impressionmember with their axes coincident with the axes of said segmental gears, downwardly facing tracks supported on said bed adapted to engage the tops of said rollers in one movement of said impression-member, upwardly facing tracks located below said downwardly facing tracks and supported on said bed adapted to engage the under side of said rollers in the opposite movement of said impression-member, said upwardly facing tracks being adapted to lift the impression-member from its operative level, and means for automatically shifting the relative position of said rollers and of said upwardly and downwardly facing tracks.

In a printing press comprising a horizontal type-bed, a rocking impression-member, supporting segmental gears secured to said impression-member with their axes coincident with the axes of said impressionmember, racks formed on the bed adapted to be engaged by said segmental gears, rollers carried by said segmental gears with their axes coincident with the axes of said segmental gears, said rollers having both rotative and endwise movement with reference to said segmental gears, downwardly facing tracks supported on said bed adapted to engage the tops of said rollers in one movement of said impression member, upwardly facing tracks supported on said bed and adapted to engage the under sides of said rollers in the opposite movement of said impression member, said two pairs of :tracks being arranged in different vertical planes, and cams supported on said bed at the opposite ends thereof adapted to produce endwise movement of Said rollers to bring them into engagement with one or the other of said sets of tracks.

A printing press comprising a horizontal type-bed, a rocking impression-member, supporting rockers on the impression-memberhaving bearing surfaces concentric with the bearing surface of the impression member, upwardly facing supporting bearing surfaces formed on the bed adapted to be engaged by said supporting rockers, rollers carried by said rockers with their axescoincident with the axes of said rockers, downwardly facing tracks supported on said bed adapted to engage the tops of said rollers,
buffers formed at the end of said bed provided with projecting arms having downwardly facing surfaces, and lugs secured to the faces of said rockers adaptedto be engaged by the arms of said-buffers at the end of the movement of said impression member.

A printing press comprising a horizontal type-bed, a rocking impression member, supporting segmental gears secured to said impression member, racks mounted on said bed adapted to be engaged by said segmental gears, rollers carried by said impressionmember with their axes coincident with the axes of said segmental gears, downwardly facing tracks supported on said bed adapted to engage the tops of said rollers, buffer.,- formed at the end of said bed provided with projecting arms having downwardly facing surfaces, and pins secured to the faces of said segmental gears adapted to be engaged by the arms of said buffers at the end of the A movement of said impression member.

In a printing press comprising a horizontal type-bed, a rocking impression-member, supporting segmental gears secured to said impression-member with their axes coincident with the axes of said impressionmember, racks formed on the bed adapted to be engaged by said segmental gears, rollers carried by said segmental gears with their axes coincident with the axes of said segmental gears, said rollers having both rotative and endwise movement with reference to said segmental gears, downwardly facing tracks supported on said bed adapted to engage the tops of said rollers in one movement of said impression-member, upwardly facing tracks supported on said bed opposite ends thereof adapted to produce endwise movement of said rollers to bringt-hem into engagement with one or the other of said sets of tracks, plates secured to the outer faces of said segmental gears, and lugs supported above said bed adapted to be struck by said plates at the limit of the rocking movement of said impression-member.

A printing press comprising a horizontal type-bed, a rocking, cylindric i111- pressibn-member, supporting rockers on the impression-member having curved bearing surfaces concentric with the bearing surface of the impressioli-member, upwardly facing supporting bearing surfaces formed on the bed and adapted to be engaged by the supporting rockers, rollers carried by said rockers, downwardly facing tracks supported on said bed adapted to engage the tops of said rollers in one movement of said impressionmember, upwardly facing tracks located below said downwardly facing tracks and supported from said bed and adapted to engage the rollers in the opposite movement of said with the bearing surface of the impression-y member, upwardly facing supporting bearing surfaces formed on the bed adapted to be engaged by said supporting rockers, downwardly facing tracks supported on said bed adapted to engage the tops of said rollers, and means adapted to retain the ends of said rockers in engagement with said upwardly facing bearing surfaces of the bed after said rollers have passed beyond the limits of said downwardly facing rails.
