DRIER.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY GARRETT, of Linnens, Linn county, Missouri, have invented a new and use ful Steam Drying-Apparatus; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.

This invention relates to an apparatus for drying fruit, ,vegetables, clothes, 850., by means of heat radiated from steam-pipes; and

The said invention consists in such an arrangement of open-bottomed shelves or trays around the heatingapparatus, as will insure the drying of all kinds of ar- -ticlesin the most thorough and efiectual manner, with the least. consumption offuel, and without scorching.

In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective .view of a steam dryingapparatus, embodying my invention, all of the doors being opened, and a number of the trays being removed.

. Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the apparatus, with the doors closed.

Figure 3 is a transverse section of the same.

The house A, which contains the apparatus, is divided into two compartments or chambers, of which the smaller one, B, is furnished with 'a furnace and boiler for generating-steam, while the larger one, C, is fitted with trays, upon which are placed the articles to be dried. The sides of the house may-be of wood or sheet-metal.

The chambers 13 O are provided with doors b 1), cc 0" c', which, when closed, retain the heat within the house, and which, when opened, allow access to all parts of the apparatus.

Secured to the inner walls of the house, arecleats, a, which support trays or shelves D E, of which the ones, D, in the chamber B, are provided with perforations (I, while the ones, E, in the chamber 0, are composed of slats or laths having inters'tices'e between them.

The object of these perforations and interstices is to admitthe warm air to the articles contained upon the shelves, so as to facilitate the drying of the fruit, 8m.

The apparatus for heating the drier, consists of a stove or furnace, F, upon which is placed a boiler, G, that is surmounted by a tank, H, which contains a supply of ,water for replenishing the boiler G, as rapidly as the contents of the latter become evaporated.

A pipe, I, having a suitable cock, i, admits water from the tank into the boiler.

Proceeding from the top of the'boiler G, is a pipe, J, which conducts steam into a number of vertical tubes K, whose lower ends are united to a common drain-pipe, L, having a cock, I, for the discharge of condensed steam.

The pipe J may be provided with a throttle-valve, N, for the purpose of regulating the amount of steam passing through the pipes J K L.

O is a smoke-pipe, leading from the furnace F.

P l are registers for regulating the temperature of the .drier.

The operation of my drying-apparatus is as rollows:

The fruit, vegetables, or other articles to be dried, are first placed upon the open-bottomed shelves D d, E c, when the latter are slid upon the cleats a, and

as soon as the house has been completely filled with,

shelves, fire is kindled in the furnace, and the doors I) b c c c" c"f closed. 4

Steam is generated in the boiler G, in a few minutes, and as it circulates through the pipes J K L, heat is radiated in every direction, thereby thoroughly and uniformly warming the air inside the apparatus, and causing the fruit, 850., to be dried in an expeditious manner, and without any danger of being burned.

The moisture, which is expelled from the articles being dried, is permitted to escape through the register 1?.

As" rapidly as water is evaporated from boiler G, a fresh supply is ad'mitte". by simply opening the cock- 1 Whenever it is intended to use the apparatus for drying clothes, the trays, D d or E e, may be removed, and a number of poles or lines substituted for them, upon which the garments can be hung.
