Application filed January 26, 1910.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, 1911.
Serial No. 540,264.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WALSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dushore, in the county of Sullivan and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting-Nippers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to implements, and particularly to nippers such as are used for gripping various objects and for cutting wire, small nails and other articles of like character, the object of the invention being to so form the biting edge of a pair of cutting nippers that when the jaws of the nippers are gripping an object, the cutting edge shall be protected and not subjected to pressure which shall tend to overturn the cutting edge or wear it away. This object is attained by forming the opposed biting edges of the aws of the nippers with opposed abutments which, when the jaws are closed, will abut against each other and prevent the sharp cutting edges of the jaws from contacting with each other or with the object being gripped.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, and to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved nippers, the jaws thereof being partly in section; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of one jaw, showing the outside face thereof; and, Fig. 4 is a like view of the other jaw, showing the inside face thereof.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
Referring to these figures, 2 designates the opposed members of nippers of an ordinary construction, the members forming handles, as usual. The ends of the handles are bent, as at 4, to form opposed jaws, and the opposed members are pivoted, as at 3.- The jaws 4 are of course wider than the handle portions, as is usual in nippers of this character. The biting edge of each jaw is beveled upon its inside face, as usual, and between its side edges each jaw is sharpened, as at 5, to form a cutting edge. This cutting edge is not as long as the entire width of the biting edge of the jaw, and hence on each end of the cutting edge a thickened portion or abutment is left, these abutments being designated 6. I have termed these thickened portions abutments, for the reason that the thickened portion on one jaw abuts against the thickened portion on the other jaw. When the nippers are in use for grasping an object, the pressure on the jaws will be transmitted through these thickened portions or abutments 6, and-the sharp, relatively weak cutting edges 5 will be relieved of pressure. Thus, these sharp cutting edges 5 will not be overturned, blunted or worn as they would be were they forced into or against the object being held. Thus, the sharp cutting edges of the nippers are prevented from wearing, such as would ocour in ordinary use. Furthermore, these opposed abutments 6 give a firmer hold of the nippers upon an article grasped by the jaw. They will be forced into the article being held gripped, and will prevent any wrenching movement of the nippers from acting upon the sharp cutting edge.
While my device may be used for all the ordinary purposes of nippers, it is particu larly adapted for use in horseshoeing, for withdrawing the nails from the hoof, and for cutting nails off. I have found it extremely effective in practice, and experience has shown that the sharp cutting edge 5 is subjected to practically no wear, so that the cutting edge will not dull, even with con tinued use.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is An implement of the character described, comprising opposed handles and opposed jaws on the handles, said jaws being cur ed to bring the edges into alinement with each other when the jaws are shut, the meeting edges of the jaws being beveled on their inside faces, the middle portion of each jaw being beveled more acutely than the ends of ister with the abutments on the opposed the jaw so as to form a middle cutting edge jaw When the jaws are brought together. 10 and relatively thickened ZLbLltDlGlltS on each In testimony whereof I afliX my signa end thereof, said abutinents having relature in presence of two Witnesses.
' tively narrow faces the outer face of the JOHN WALSH. [L.s.]
cutting edge being in a plane coincident with WVitnesses: the outer face of the abutments and the ELSIE WV. MoYER, abutments on one jaw being adapted to reg- REED J. THOMSON.
