T o all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH R. W. MEN- cii-R, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, in the county of .New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricators, of which the following is a specification.
i This invention relates to improvements in lubricators.

The principal objects which the present invention has in view areFirst to provide a lubricator of the squirt-gun order wherein' may be used alternately either grease or oil. Second to procure a mechanical construction whereby the necessary force may be applied to the feed plunger when delivering grease; and whereby the plunger may be advanced or receded to accommodate the needs of this feed. Third to produce a construction wherein a change to the use of grease or oil may be readily and quickly made.
Tith these objects in view the construction as illustrated in the drawing consists of a cylindrical, barrel, 2, which is formed to any desired diameter, the ends of which are open, and are threaded to receive the caps, 3 and 4. The latter of these caps is suitably provided with the spout, 5. The spout may be any desired lengt-h or shape and may be replaced as is common withthe lubricators. The cap, 3, is provided wit-h a boss, 6, to form an elongated bearing to be provided with an internal thread, which in operation is engaged by the threaded shank of the screw threaded nipple, 7 The barrel, 2, is provided in its side with an opening, 8, of suitable dimensions; which opening is provided to permit the filling of the interior of the barrel with heavy lubricant, such as grease. This opening is closed by means of a door, 9, which yis provided with hinge wings, 10, that are suitably mounted in hinged lugs, 11, 11. The lugs, 11, are usually cast on the barrel, but it will be understood that if itl is desired to construct the barrel o f tubing or sheet metal, these lugs may be riveted or otherwise attached. At the other end of the door it is secured in position by the nut, 12, threaded on the swing bolt, 13. This swing bolt is hinged on the barrel, 2, and is adapted to swing up and over the yoke, 14, formed on the door, 9. The operation of the swing boltis commonlyV understood.
W'hen the door is closed and the swing bolt is thrown in position, it may be desired to true the interior of the barrel so that the inner face of the door will conform to the cylinder of the interior of the barrel. The construction as a rule is stout enough to permit this. When the door is closed and locked in position the bariel is, to all intents and purposes, as far as this invention is concerned, a Kcontinuous and tight cylinder. This cylinder has mounted therein, the plunger head, 15, constructed of the muslirooin or inverted cup shape shown in drawings at Fig. 4. It is provided with the iiange, 16. to act as a'follower guide. The boss, 17, is tapped and threaded to receive the end of the rod, 18. This rod is screwed rigidly into the boss, 17, and may be pinned in such position if desired, and if it is found necessary to preventthe same becoming separated from the rod, 18, when the same is rotated in the direction which would unscrew the rod from the boss.
The rod, 18, passes through a smooth bored perforation in the nipple, 7 The nipple, 7, is provided with a set screw, 19, threaded in al tapped perforation in' the head, 20, with which the nipple is provided. -The purpose of the screw, 19, is that when driven home it impinges upon the rod, 18, and thereby causes the rod to advance or recede. as the nipple, 7 is screwed in the boss, 6, and thereby advance or recede the plunger, 15. Then this nut, 19, is released the rod. 18, may be freely moved through the perforation in the nipple, 7.
When the implement is used for lubricating with oil, it is found expedient to provide a gasket for the door, 9. It is for this purpose that I have provided the groove, 21, shown in Fig. 3 around the top of the opening. This groove would receive a gasket, which would be compressed by the door when screwed into its closed position.
The operation of the invention is best described in its two-fold use. Its greatest novelty is that in which it is employed for use in lubricating with heavygrease, such as Albany 7, or similar lubricants. In such use the door, 9, is opened and the grease is packed into the barrel, 2, 'completely filling the entire space, the plunger, 15, having been y the nipple, 7 lwith the,rod,`18, and plunger.

When it is packed the door, 9, is brought into position and the springl bolt, 13 carrying the nut, 12, is thrown over the yoke, 14, and the door secured firmly in position. As stated the plunger, l5, has been withdrawnto the top of the barrel, and to do this the nut, 19, has been unscrewed andthe rod, 18, drawn back. With the parts in position as has been described, the first operation isto force. the plungerby means of the` rod, 1,8, downward. This action p acks thev grease, and starts the same into the nozzle, 5.
However, if the grease is not of a very light character the force applied would not eject the grease through the nozzle, 5. For this purpose the nipple, 7, is provided. The nut, 19, is screwed into engagement with the rod, 18. The nipple, 7, is now locked by the screw, 19, to the rod, 18. By now rotating the rod, 18, the threads of the nipple, 7, feed inward,` carrying the rod, 18, and plunger, 15, yforward at a slowrate but with powerful force sufficient to drive the grease out of the barrel, 2, and out of the small feed end of the nozzle, 5. JThe' grease has been thus forced out until the end of the nipple, 7, is against thecap; 3. -The rotation is now reversed and receded outward to the limit of action of are again imposition to repeat the operation as above described. A lubricator comprising a cylindrical body portion having a ldelivery spout; a hinged section for the body portion; locking means to rigidly hold said hinged section in position to conform to the cylindrical surface of said body portion; a cap adapted to close the rear end of said body portion provided with a screw threaded central perforation; a
screw threaded feed member thread engaged 4 with the perforation in said cap and having a longitudinal smooth perforation `extended therethrough; a pistonrotatable within said body portion; a smooth surfaced rod slidably mounted in the perforation in said feed member; and means for locking the said rod and feed member in fixed relation.-
8. Alubricator comprising a cylindrical body portion provided with a delivery spout;
a longitudinal. section of said body portion being hinged to the main section of the body portion and adapted to fit said main section when closed to preserve the cylindrical shape of the interior of said body portion; a suitable fastening device to secure the free end of said removable section to lock the' said section firmly in position; a cap adapted to close the rear end of said body portion provided with a screw threaded central per- Y ber adapted :to engage the said screw'thread# ed perforation in the'rear end of said body portion and having a longitudinal perfora-y tion; a plunger embodying a head rotatable in said body portion, and a smooth rod slidably mounted in said perforation in said screw threaded member; and a set screw mounted in said threaded member adapted to impinge upon the said plunger rod to hold the same in fixed relation with the said threaded member.
