aoromosmn srnimm nnvicn.
To all whom it may concern:
ie it known that LHARRYVVALKE a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Maxwell, iu-th'e-eoiuity of Colfax and 'lerritory of \'ew Mexico."hav invented certain new and s, usetul improvements muAutomoblle bpindle Devices, of which the following is a specification. reference being had there n to the aceonipanying drawing.
This invention relates to vehicle lamps, and the principal ob]ect of the same is to provide an improved mechanism whereby the lamps will be turned as the front wheels are turned thus keeping the llght continually in the direction 111 which the machine is going. t
This invention is illustrated'in the aceompanying drawing. wherein.-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lamp and the means for turning the same. Fig. 2 is a view in side (ltl' tlllfill ot' the improved operatinc mechanism. Fig. 3 is a rear view cf the operating mechanism, the dotted lines. showing the means for operating the devlce as it would appear when moved to turn the lamps.
tet'erring to the accompanying drawings by numerals. it" will be seen that the improved device is intended to be used in connection with a lamp 1 which is mounted upon a bracket 2 having a rearwardlvextending arm 3 at its lower end which is pivotally mounted upon the spring 4 at the trout end of the vehicle by means of the bolt 5. These lamps are intended to be used principally on automobiles in which there-are provided two lamps, one on each side of the motor. The construction of these lamps is identical although the'opcrating mechanism is only conneetedwith one of them. A bracket (3 is secured to the rear of the pivot point of the arni 3 and in alinement with its bifurcated end, and its low er end 7 is bent. outwardly and termi-- notes in a bifurcated portion 8 in which a vertical arm 9 plvotally mounted intermediate its length. The upper end of the arm E) is provided with a longi'tudinalslot- "lamp, and has its end connected with the arm 3 of the second lamp so that when the Specification of Letters Patent. firstlamp is turned the second lamp is turned in the same direction. The lower end of the arm 9 is provided with a socket point- 13 by means of which an outwardly extending'arm H is connected with the arm 9, thus forming a universal 'oint to permit very free movement. Thewlieel knuckleltiis provided with an attaching ear 16 to...
which a clip 17 is secured, by any desired means, such for instance as a bolt 18. clip has a forwardly extending. arm 19 which terminates in a socket joint- QO'by means of which the arm 14 is connected with the arm 19. In operation the Wheels are turned ancl the knuckles 15 rotate in their bearings. If the machine is being turned in the direction of the knuckle having the operating mechanism connected thereto, the link 17 moves away from the vehicle body and draws the arm 14: outwardly. This rocks the arm 9 and moves the upper portion toward the yehicle body which rocks the arm 3 upon the pivot and turns the lamp in the direction of the wheel. The lamp upon the opposite side of the ma.-
chine is moved by the rod 11 which is con The l arm, and thus permit the rod to Work properly,
lVhat I claim is:-
1. A lamp operating mechanism comprising a lamp bracket having an angled lower end adapted tobe-pivotally monn ed upon a spring, a rod pivotally connected with said angled end, and adapted to' turn said lamp, a bracket adapted to be secured to the spring, a. vertical arinpivotally connected with the lower end of said bracket and pro vided in its upper portion with a longitndi n'alslot, a bolt passing through said slot; and slidably connecting said first-mentioned rod with'said vertical rod, a horizontal arm, a. universal joint connecting said horizontal arm with said vertical arm, a link, a universal joint connecting said link to said horizontalarm and means for connecting said link with-a wheel knuckle.
Q t 989, .t57
2. In combinationwith a vehicle having a Wheel knuckle provided with an attaching car, a link connected with said attaching ear, said link provided with an arm terminating in a'universal joint, 0. horizontal arm connected with said universal joint and hav ing its other end connected by a universal joint with a vertical arm, a bracket securing said ver ti cal arm to the spring of said vehicle,
10 I a lamp pivotally mounted upon the spring of said vehicle, and a rod pivotally connected with said lamp and slidably connected with said "ertical rod.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix mi signature inpresence of two Witnesses.
