To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that VViLLmM K. FRASER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Brewer, in the county of Penobscot, in the State of Maine, and GEORGE H. Fox, deceased, late a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Bangor, in the county of Penob scot, in the State of Maine, (ANNA B. Fox, of said Bangor, in said county and State, administratrix of said GEORGE H. FOX, deceased,) invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Pen and Pencil Holders, whereof the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an article holder especially adapted for use in the vest pocket for holding pencils, fountain pens and similar articles.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap and convenient device of this character, which will permit such articles to be quickly and carelessly inserted therein.

Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings represents an elevation of one face of an article holder embodying this invention. Fig. 2 represents an elevation of the opposite face thereof. Fig. 3 represents on an enlarged scale a vertical transverse section of a vest pocket containing an article holder embodying this invention. Fig. 4 represents also on an enlarged scale a horizontal section on line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 represents on a still larger scale a horizontal transverse section through a fragment of the article holder, showing the interlapped ends of the spring band in engagement with one of the side notches of the backer plate. Fig. represents a fragment of the plate constituting the body of the holder showing the notch at the other side thereof engaged by said spring. Fig. 7 represents in perspective afragment of a vest showing a vest pocket and a holder embodying this inven tion disposed in said pocket. Fig. 8 represents a horizontal section on line 8-8 of Fig. 3.

This article holder comprises a backer plate 10 and an elastic band 9.0 passed around said plate and stretched across the opposite faces thereof.

The backer plate 10 is preferably in the form of a shield adapted to fit within the vest pocket, and it is provided with vertical corrugations forming a plurality of individual pencil pockets 11 on one side and a plurality of individual pencil or pen pockets 12 on its opposite side. This plate 10 is provided at its opposite edges some distance from its top with notches 13 and 14 and it may be provided near its lower end with an eye 15, preferably formed by cutting two parallel slits and bending inward or outward the intermediate strip.

The elastic band 20 is preferably in the form of a closely coiled spiral spring which engages the notches 13 and 14 of the plate 10 and is stretched across the opposite faces of said plate. One end of the spring forming said band has its coils larger than those of the opposite end, whereby the larger end constitutes a socket 21 for receiving the smaller end 22, see Fig. 5. The interlapping ends engage one of the side notches as 14 and the edges of said notch enter between the coils of the end 21 or ends 21 and 22 of the spring and operate to hold the spring in endless or band form. The ends of the spring may be otherwise connected if desired.

The band 20 is disposed some distance below the top of the corrugated plate 10 forming a broad guide surface above said band with which the pencil or other article engages when thrust in carelessly in contact therewith and by which the pencil is directed under said band. The individual pockets enable the band to operate with proper tension whether one or more pencils be disposed on the same face of the plate and the arrangement of the pockets in alternation enables the pencils to be placed on both sides of the plate in somewhat interlapped relation whereby two rows of pencils may be placed in the holder in a compact space. The corrugated backer plate is preferably constructed of light thin metal, Celluloid or other suitable material and it may be painted, lacquered, nickeled, silver plated or gold plated.

Means for fastening the plate in the pocket may consist of a safety pin 30, the pin of which is passed through the pocket fabric and through the eye 15.
