Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 15, 1910.

To all whom may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN C. MoLnAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in renches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches and more particularly to that type of wrenches known as sliding aw or monkey wrenches.
One object of the invention is the provision of an adjusting nut for the sliding jaw of a monkey wrench orthe like, having one of its faces roughened, and a slide to engage with said roughened surface and lock the same against movement, whereby movement of the jaws after adjustment by the nut will be positively prevented.
Another objectis the provision of a wrench proviced with a rotatable handle having connection with the slide for locking the adjusting nut and adapted when turned in one direction to advance the slide into engagement with the adjusting nut.
With these and other objects in view, which will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of the device may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specification ;Figure 1 is a side elevation of a monkey wrench showing my improved lock applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the handle, slide and adjusting nut in longitudinal section.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout.
The stationary member is shown to include a shank portion designated by the numeral 5, one end of which terminates in the usual gripping jaw 6, while the opposite end portion of which is rounded from a point adjacent the middle of the shank, as shown at 7 and terminates in a reduced exteriorly the shank 5.

As shown in Fig. 2 the portion of the shank 5 between the middle thereof and the rounded portion 7 is offset as at 9 to provide a shoulder 10, the portion 9 being non-cylindrical in cross section. Formed on that side of the shank opposite to the shoulder 10 is a transverse recess 16, one end of which is in alinement with the shoulder 10.
The movable member is shown to include a short shank portion designated by the numeral 11. one end of which terminates in a gripping jaw 12 the inner end of said gripping jaw having a loop to receive the shank 5, and the opposite end of the shank being provided with a loop or collar 13 to receive The shank 11 is hollow and interiorly screw-threaded to receive the adjusting screw 14-. .hreaded into the shank 11 is one end of an adjusting screw 14:, and fixedly secured to the opposite end portion of the said adjusting screw is an adjusting nut 15, a portion of which is seated in the recess 16.
Slidingly fitted on the offset portion 9 is a slide 17. This member is in the form of a sleeve having a non-cylindrical bore to receive the portion 9 and is provided on one side and at one end with an offstanding portion 18, one face of which is in a plane with one end of the sleeve and is provided with a socket to receive the opposite end of the adjusting screw 1-1. The face of the offstanding portion 18 provided with the socket, is
serrated and the adjacent face of the ad justing nut 15 is serrated, these said serrations when locked operating to prevent movement of the adjusting nut. The opposite end portion of the slide 17 is substantially circular in contour and is provided with a screw threaded counter-bore 19, the purpose of which will presently appear.
The handle is designated by the numeral 20 and is provided with a circular bore to loosely receive the rounded end 7 of the shank. The handle is somewhat less in length than the length of the shank and threaded onto the boss 8 of the latter is a nut 21 serving to prevent displacement of the handle. The inner end of the handle or that adjacent to the slide 17 is provided with an exteriorly threaded collar 22 somewhat less in diameter than the diameter of the handle and of a size to be received by the threaded counterbore 19 of the slide. It might here be stated that when the handle is secured on the rounded portion 7 in the manner just described and the serrations of the slide in engagement with those of the adjusting nut and the screw-threaded collar engaged by the screw threads on the counterbore 19 that a space will exist between the inner end of the handle and adjacent end of the slide, so that by turning the handle in one direction the slide 17 will move toward the handle 20, whereby the serrated surface of the slide will be moved from engagement with the serrations of the nut 15, whereupon it will be possible to adjust the jaws G and 12 to the desired position to engage the ob ject to be operated upon, after which by turning the handle in the opposite direction it will move the serrated surface of the slide into engagement with the serrated surface of the nut 15, whereby turning movement of the nut and consequent movement of the movable member will be positively prevented.
I claim 1. In a wrench the combination with a stationary and movable member, of an adjusting nut connected to the movable member and having a roughened surface, a slide arranged on the stationary member and provided with a roughened surface and a handle rotatably mounted on the stationary member and connected to the slide and adapted when turned in one direction to move the roughened surface of the slide into binding engagement with the roughened surface of the adjusting nut, for the purposes described.
2. In a wrench the combination with a stationary and movable member; of an adjusting nut connected to the movable member and having one face thereof serrated a slide arranged on the stationary member below the nut, a handle rotatably mounted on the stationary member having one end portion threaded into the slide and adapted when turned to move the slide into and out of engagement with the serrated surface of the nut.
