HORACE W. ARNOLD, OF VANCOUVER, WASHINGTON.
DEVICE FOR TAKING MOISTURE OR OTHER, VAPORS OUT OF GASES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. *7, 1911.
Application filed June 20, 1910. Serial No. 568,042.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, T-IORACE "W. ARNOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vancouver, in the county of Clarke and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Taking Moisture or other Vapors Out of Gases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for removing moisture or other vapors from gases.
lVhile my invention is adapted to many uses it is particularly adapted for use in connection with an acetylene generator to remove the water vapor which is carried by the acetylene gas and which if not removed from the gas will cause clogging of the burners and consequent extinguishment of the lights. i
The object of my invention is to produce a device of this character which is simple in construction, composed of few parts and not liable to get out of order.
lVith these and other objects in view my invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts the preferred form of which will be first described in connection with the accompanying drawings and then the invention particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings wherein the same part is designated by the same reference numeral wherever it occurs, Figure l is a perspective view, partly broken away, of the preferred form of my invention; Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section, partly broken away, and Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 8, 3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow.
4: designates a container which may be cylindrical or of other form desired, and provided with a bottom 5, through which extends the inlet pipe 6. The top of the container is preferably provided with an outwardly extending flange 7, surrounded by a ring 8. The container is closed by means of a cover which, preferably and as shown, consists of a plate 9 to which is secured a dome 10 provided with an outlet pipe 11 in its apex, the dome being secured to the plate by means of bolts 12 extending from the edge of the dome and passing through openings in the plate and held in position by means of the nuts 13, threaded on the bolts, The plate 9 is also provided with openings 24 through which gas passes from the container into the dome.
In order to secure the plate to the containerI have illustrated bolts 15 provided with wing nuts 16, the bolts passing through the ring 8 and the plate 9. Preferably I interpose between the plate and the ring the gasket 17. whereby a tight joint between the container and the cover is insured.
In the form of my invention shown, 18 designates a cylindrical section, preferably formed of sheet metal and provided at its 7 upper end with the outwardly extending flange 19 adapted to rest upon a gasket 20 supported on the outwardly extending flange 7 of thecontainer 4:, whereby the cylinder is supported in position within the container. Depending from the lower end of the cylinder 18 is a portion 21 made of reticulated material, such as wire screen or the like, the upper edge of the portion 21 being secured to the lower edge of the cylinder 18 by means of a ring 22, the parts being soldered together. The central portion of the bottom of the screen section 21 is ext-ended upwardly to form a cone 22, which is closed at its upper end by means of a cap 23, this cone section 22 being adapted to surround the inlet pipe 6 with the cap 23 extending over the top of the inlet but spaced therefrom to afford a free ingress of the gas from the pipe 6 to the container. The cylinder 18 and the section 21 form a basket in which is placed quicklime or other hygroscopic material, and the sides of the basket are preferably inclined as shown, so that when a substance such as lime is used it may readily drop out of the basket into the space in the container beneath the basket, as it becomes slaked.
From the above described construction it will be seen that the gases on entering the container through the pipe 6 are compelled to pass through the hygroscopic material contained in the basket where the moisture or other vapors that they may carry will be removed before they can pass into the dome 10 and the outlet pipe 11. The purpose of extending the plate 9 over the entire bottom area of the dome is to prevent the choking of the outlet pipe. By forming the top of the cone 22 as a solid cap 23 the material in the basket is prevented. from falling into the end of the inlet pipe 6.
I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not intend to limit myself to the specific form shown and described.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device for removing moisture or other vapors from gases, the combination with a casing, a removable top for the casing, a basket supported in the casing with its bottom separated from the bottom of the casing, a portion of the bottom of the basket extending up within the sides of the basket, an inlet pipe extending through the bottom of the casing and within said upwardly ex tending portion of the basket, and an outlet pipe connected to the container above the basket. 7
2. In a device for removing moisture or other vapors from gases, the combination with a casing, a removable top for the casing, a basket supported in the casing with its bottom separated from the bottom of the casing, said basket being formed with an upper imperforate portion and a lower reticulated portion, the bottom of the lower portion having a conical extension up within the sides of the basket, an imperforate cap forming the top of the conical section, an inlet pipe flange, a top for the casing comprising a plate, means to removably secure the plate to the ring, a dome extending up from the central portion of the plate, said plate being provided with openings within the area covered by the dome, a basket provided with an outwardly extending flange at its upper edge, 1
adapted to be supported on the flange of the casing with the bottom of the basket separated from the bottom of the casing, said basket having a portion of its bottom eX tending up within the sides of the basket, an 7 inlet pipe extending into the casing below the basket and within said upwardly extending portion of the basket, and an outlet pipe connected to the dome of the top.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence or" two witnesses.
HORACE W. ARNOLD.
