UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOHN F. ROMIG, OF BRAZIL, NORTH DAKOTA.
SPARK-ARRESTER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. RoMIo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brazil, in the county of Pierce and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark-Arresters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spark arresters and has for its object to provide a device of this nature which will prevent the sparks from passing out and yet offer little resistance, if any, to the draft, thus making it suitable and desirable for all engines from which sparks are apt to fly.
WVith the above and other objects in View, this invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a flue disclosing the present invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal cross section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an elevation of a deflector used in the construction; Fig. f is a similar view of an axle to which is secured a spark arrester; Fig. 5 is an elevation of the boxing or bearing provided in the flue for the axles to turn in.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, A indicates the flue or section of a flue as the case may be, provided with the lower deflectors 1 and 1, said deflectors being secured so as to deflect or direct the draft or smoke up through the center of said flue. These deflectors are preferably secured on only two opposite sides of the flue as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. On the other opposite sides are mounted two rows of rotating spark arresters 2, said arresters being rotatably mounted in boxings or bearings 3 secured to the flue. Each row of arresters is mounted just within the inner extremity of the corresponding deflector, thus offering little, if any, resistance to the draft. An oil cup 4 may be provided on each boxing for lubricating purposes. Each of these rotating spark arresters consists of a flat bar or shaft 5 having its extremities cylindrical in shape, said cylindrical portion being provided to work in the boxings. Secured to the shaft is a pair of angle irons 6 having their sides extending radially forming blades against which the smoke and draft Specification of Letters Patent.

is adapted to beat for revolving the same. Secured to each blade is foraminous material 7 of the same length as the blade but extending about double the width of each blade. This extension is provided to catch the sparks which pass into the flue. To prevent the sparks from passing up between the extremities of the blade and the sides of the flue, and out at the mouth, upper side guards 8 are provided, and are secured to the flue in transverse relation to the lower deflectors. It will thus be seen that as the smoke and draft enters the flue it will be directed up through the center of said flue and the sparks will be arrested or caught by the wire extensions or portions of the blades. The solid portion of each blade will be acted upon by the draft, thus causing the arrester to rotate and thus deliver the sparks out of reach of the draft.
Below each of the spark arresters is mounted a deflector 9 in a similar manner as are the deflectors 1 and 1'. By these deflectors 9 the draft will be conducted out of the flue through the center of the same which will insure the turning of the arresters in one direction only which would not always be the case were it not for the upper deflectors. Most of the sparks will be conducted away from the draft and deposited upon the deflectors, while some may fall back into the smoke box and still a few others may escape, though these will be dead due to the resistance afforded by the arrosters.
lVhat is claimed as new is A flue section consisting of a plurality of inwardly extending deflectors secured on opposite sides of said section, a plurality of spark arresters rotatably mounted within the innermost edge of said deflectors said spark arresters comprising a shaft with radially extending blades each of which is composed of a solid portion, and an ex tension of foraminous material, and a plurality of guards mounted transversely to said deflectors to prevent sparks passing between the extremities of the blades and the sides of the flue as herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN F. ROMIG.
