AUTOMATIC GAS CUT-OFF.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, Cmrronn A. W'oons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plankinton, in the county of Aurora and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Gas Cut-Otis, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gas burners and has particular reference to a thermostatic device for automatically shutting off the gas, when the flame has become extinguished. 4
One object of the invention is to provide an attachment for gas burners, which includes a thermostatic element adapted to be engaged with and hold means on the valve to hold the valve in open position.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for automatically releasing said holding means to close the valve.
These and other objects will be apparent from the following description and with references to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a burner having my device applied thereto, the device being in operative position. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of the holding and releasing means. Fig. 4: is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the device after the valve has been closed.
Referring particularly to the drawings, 1 represents a burner provided with the ordinary tip 2, and a valve 3. To the outer end of the stem 4 of the valve is secured a link 5. The yoke member 6 is secured by means of the strap 7 to the casing of the valve 3, and extends vertically therefrom to a suitable height, and thence horizontally over the burner, as at 6, thence downwardly as at 8. Pivotally connected to the cross member 6 of the yoke and depending therefrom, is a lever 9, near the lower end of which is attached one end of a series of thermostatic disks 10. The other end of the series is attached to the member 8, and when the disks expand or contract accordingly as the burner is burning or is out, the lever 9 will be swung horizontally on its pivot. On the lower end of the lever 9, is formed a laterally projecting lug 11, which Specification of Letters Patent.

is triangular in cross-section to form the knife edge 12. Also pivoted to the cross member 6 of the yoke, at a point 13, is a second depending arm or lever l l, which is provided on its lower end with a lug 15 similar in construction to the lug 11 and extending in a direction toward the other lug. Pivotally connected to the upper end of the link 5, is a vertically extending arm 16, which is provided at its upper end with an elongated slot- 17, adapted to ride on a pin 18 on the upper member 6. A coil spring 19 is secured at one end to the pipe adjacent the burner and at its other end to the arm 16, at a point a slightdistance below the lower end of the slot 17. The arm 16 has a roller pin 20 extending outwardly from one of its side faces, in a direction at right angles to and in the path of the lugs 11 and 15. The slot 17 of the arm 16 provides for both vertical and lateral movement of the arm. The arm 14: swings loosely, while the arm 9 swings into normal position under the influence of the contraction of the disks 10 and a coil spring 21, secured at its respective ends to the arm 9 and the member 8 of the yoke.
When the gas is lighted at the burner tip 2, the heat therefrom will swing the arm 9 to the right in Fig. 1, when the arm 16 is moved upwardly and laterally to bring its roller pin 20 to rest on the lug 15, thus supporting the arm 16 upward against the tension of the spring 19 and holding the valve 3, by means of the link 5, in open position. The lug 11, 011 the arm 9 is disposed in a plane slightly below, that of the lug 15, and when the arm 9 moves in the direction indicated, the lug 11 will push the lug 15 from beneath the pin 20, thus causing the arm 16 to be supported on the lug 11. The arm 14: and its lug 15, are only used, when the gas is first lighted, to hold the arm 16 up and the valve 3 open, until the arm 9 is moved struction maybe resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any oi the advantages of this invention.
What is claimed is:
1. In. an automatic gas cut olt, the combination with a burner and valve, of a yoke secured to said valve and overlying the burner, a depending arn'i pivotally secured to the yoke and having a free end, a thermostat secured to the yoke and to the arm, a link on the Valve, an arm seemed to the free end of said link and having a slottherein, a pin on the yoke for engagement in said slot, a spring connected to the burner and to the slotted arm, means on the tl'iern'iosta'l'. tor holding the slotted. arm. in upper positioi'i, and means on the free end of the depij nding arm adapted to engage the means on the theri'i'iostat whereby the thern'ioshit will he freed from the means on the slotted arm, and the means on the (le '.)e1'iding arm cugaged thereon. a

In an automatic cut off, the combination with a burner and a valve, of a yoke secured to the valve and overlying the burner, said yoke having a downwardly projecting portion adjacent said burner, an arm pivotally connected to the valve and having a pin and slot connection with said yoke, a depending arm pivot-ally secured to the yoke, a lug triangular in cross-section extending laterally from the lower end oi? said dcpendii'ig arm, a roller mounted on the slotted arm adapted to he engaged on said lug to support said slotted arm to hold said arm upward in the initial n'iovement in the operation of the device, a second. depending arm pivoted to the yoke, a log similar to the first mentioned lug on said second arm, said lug being disposed in a plane below that of the first mentioned lug, a spring secured to the burner and to the slotted arm adapted to draw said arm. downward to close the valve, a thermostat secured to the down:
