VENTILATING-CONDUIT FOR GARBAGE-CLOSETS.
esa 'mo.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1911.
Application filed November 3, 1910. Serial No. 590,453.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIA S. ROBIN- SON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New Yor r, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Ventilating-Conduit for Garbage Closets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,
My invention relates to garbage closets and it has for its object to provide one with a ventilating conduit having at its outer terminal a device for keeping out the rain, While permitting a free circulation of air through the conduit, the said device being so constructed that it may be placed in the wall of a building with either of its closed longitudinal faces uppermost with equally good results, so that the mechanic in installing the device, however careless he may be, will be certain to make a proper connection between the openings of the receptacle and the atmosphere beyond the conduit.
In this specification I will describe the preferred form of my invention it being understood that the scope of the invention is defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation showing a garbage closet provided with my improved conduit; Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the conduit, and Fig. 3 is a sectional perspective view showing the conduit.
By reference to the drawings, it will be seen that a garbage closet 5 is provided having a bottom 6, a rear wall 7, side walls 8, and a top 10. In the garbage closet 5 is disposed a garbage can 11, which 'is provided with a lid 12, the front of the garbage closet 5 being closed by a door 13. There are two openings 14 in the rear walls 7 of the recep tacle 5, these openings 14 being in communication with the communicating means 15, formed by openings in the brick construction. In each of these openings 15 is disposed a member 16, these members 16 having upper walls 18, lower walls 19, side walls 20, the side walls 20 connecting the upper and lower walls. At the outer end 'of each of these members 16, there are disposed two members 21, which are secured to the upper and lower walls 18 and 19 respectively. The members 21 converge inwardly with their inner terminals 22 spaced from each other. A lug 23 is secured to the members 21, and connects them at their inner terminals. Members 24 are disposed horizontally at the outer side of each of the members 16, the sides of the members 24 resting against the side walls 20 of the members 16, the members 24 being held in place by screws 25, disposed in orifices 26 in the members 24, these screws 25 being disposed through orifices 27 in the lug 23, and being held in place by means of nuts 28. It will therefore be seen that there is a communicating means leading from the interior of the garbage closet to each of the openings 14, the said communicating means extending to the wall at the outer side of the building, the members 16 forming units in these communicating means respectively. It will also be seen that as these members 16 are constructed with upper and lower walls 18 and 19, and a member 21 extending downwardly from the upper wall 18, and a member 21 extending upwardly from the lower wall 19, they will correspond with each other, so that the me chanic may insert the member 16 in the wall horizontally with the members 24 outwardly disposed, without examining them with care. The member 16 may be constructed at little expense, and may be readily handled and fitted into the wall of a building.
Having thus described my invent-ion I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A terminal for a conduit having upper and lower portions, members secured to the said upper and lower portions of the conduit, the said members converging inwardly, a lug connecting the inner terminals of the said members, a transverse member disposed against the outer end of the terminal, and means for securing the transverse member to the lug.
2. A. receptacle having an opening, a com municating means having an outer terminal with upper and lower portions leading from the opening, members secured to the upper and lower portions of the communicating means, the members converging inwardly with their inner portions spaced from each other, and an additional vertically disposed member secured to the outer terminal of the communicating means, and spaced from its top and bottom.
3. A receptacle having an opening, a communicating means having an outer terminal with upper and lower portions leading from the opening, members secured to the upper and lower portions of the communicating means at the outer terminal, the said members converging inwardly, a lug connecting the inner terminals of the said members, a transverse member disposed against the outer terminal of the communicating means, and means for securing the transverse member to the lug.
4. A terminal for a conduit with walls disposed opposite each other, members secured to the said walls, the members converging inwardly, a lug connecting the said members, a transverse member disposed against the outer end of the terminal, and means for securing the transverse member to the lug.
5. A terminal for a conduit, members dis- In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
