METHOD OF FORMING I-BARS WITH TAPEIR-LESS FLANGES.

Be it known that I, HUGO SACK, a subject of the Emp'eror of Gormany, resirling at Dusseldorf,lthenish Prussia, Germany have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methode of Forming I-Bars with Taperless Flanges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a method of producing I-beams with taperless flanges.
-Referring to the accompanying drawing; Figure 1 is a cross sect-ion of one preliminary form of bar fro1n Which the finishecl I-beam may be rolled; Fig. 2 is a cross section of a portion of a modified preliminary form of barand' Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a mill having four rolls, arranged in the san1e plane, for rolling the prelirninary bar into the finisheol I-beam, which is shown in section in the pass of the rolls.
In praoticing the method, an I-bar, eitlxor of the typs shown in Figs. 1 or 9 or ot any other form having tpering flanges, is passed through a mill of the type slxown in Fig. 3, comprising opposed x ortical rolls having working faces which bear against the outer sides of the flanges, a1ul oppose l horizontal rolls havingworkiag t'aovs whioh bear on the web and inner sidos ot' the flanges of the bar, and shoul(lors whichact on the edgos of the flangos to lisplaoo tho motal inward tow'ard the plane of the web until both sides of the flanges are forco l into contact with the adjacont parallel t'aoes 'ot' the horizontal and vertical rolls.
The preliminary bar shown in Fig. 1 is of the ordinary commercial forn1, having a Web 1 with pairs of marginal tapering, oppositely-disposed flanges 2, the outer faces of the flanges being vertical and the inner faces on each side of the web converging toward the Web. y
The preliminary bar shown in Fig. 2 has a web 1 with opposite tapering flanges 9. the outer faces of which are Vertical ancl thd inner faces of which incline imvardtoward the web. The edges 3 of the flanges are outwardly beveled. V
The mill shown in Fig. 3 comprises two vertical rolls 4:, having cylindrical working faces 5, and tWo horizontal rolls 6, having horizontal working faces 7, vertical working faces 8, und hor1zontal sho ulders 9.
In employing the universal 1nill illustrated t0 produce an I-beam with taperless flanges, the preliminary bar, for examplo that shown in Fig. l. is drawn into the pas. of the rolls, the. end of the'web 1 preferabl being formed into a projecting tonguewhich is initially engagecl by the working faces 7 of' the horizontal rolls, to etfect the reqnired tension on the bar. The bar is then gradually drawn, by friction. through the pass ot' the rolls. The faces of the horizontal rolls slightly oompress the web of the bar. reducing its thickness to that, 10, of the finished I-bea1n The shoulders 9 of the horizontal rolls press 011 the edges of the flanges 2 of the preliminary bar and displace the metal inward toward the plane of the Web, until the opposite faces of the flanges are forced into contact with the adjacent vertical faces 5, 8, of the vertical and horizontal rolls, thereby converting tlie tapered flanges of the preliminary bar into parallel-faced 01 taperless flanges 11. it is somewhat elongatecl; and a portion of the edges of the bar-flanges 2 is clisplaced in the form of thin fins 12, into the narrow spaccS between the faces 5 of the. vertioal rolls and the ends 13 of the horizontal rolls. Tho vertical rolls are preferably Set so tha t the (listaaoo botween their working facos is somewhat lass thanthat botween the. outor sidos of the flanges 9 of the proliminar v bar. so that the metal in the flanges is simultaneousl v forced inward tow'ard the vertical faces 8 of the horizontal rolls, thus forcibl v compressing the metal of the flanges ancl giving the1n a smooth surface.
The preliminary type of' bar shown in Fig. 2 may, in some cases, be employed to advantage, since, by reason of the beveled edges 3 of the flanges, the shoulders 9 of the horizontal rolls bear primarily on the portions of the eclges remote from the spaces between the vertical rolls and the ends of the horizontal rolls, so that the fiange-metal is displacecl inward toward the web ancl laterally against the faces 5, 8, to produce the taperloss flanges, bat is not forcecl outW'ard in fins into the narrow spaces at the 011(lS 13 of the horizontal rolls.

I claim:
l. The process of producing Ibea1ns with taperless flanges, Which consists in first rolling a blank into a bar having a Web with pairs of marginal, oppositely-disposed, tapering flanges, and then rolling said bar into an I-beam having taperless flanges, by simultaneously f0rc1ng supports hav1ng parallel ele1nents against the outer sides of the barflanges and between said fianges und applying pressuro to the edges of said flanges, the pressure being directed inward toward tl1e plane of seid web, thereby displacing tl1e fiange-metal inwnrd and laterally until it fills the taperless passes betvveen Saicl supports.
2. The method of forming beams having non-tapering flanges, which consists in the rolling down of the ingot 0r billet to a bean1 having marginal oppositely-disiaosed tapering flanges, and then upsetting such flanges by pressureapplied in clirections at right angles to tl1e plane of the web while such flanges are laterally inclosed between parallel elements, whereby the metal of the flanges is caused t0 fill the space defi1led by said parallel elements.
