Description

trenta sane j MORGANPAYNE, Aor
cAnnrncToN, oHIo'.
Leners Patent No. 98,187, dated December 21, 1869.l
IMPROVEMENT IN NUT-LOCK..
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part 0f the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, MORGAN PAYNE, of Cai-dington, in the county of Morrow, and in the vState of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and d hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speciiication,
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of certain devices for locking nuts, wherever the same may be used, so as to prevent Athem from unscrewing, from jarring or other causes.
In order to enable othersskilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l isa side viewof a rai1road-splice,on which the nut is fastened by my lock; e
Figure 2 is a plan view of the washer;
Figure 3 is a side view of the spring-key; and
Figure 4 is a plan view'of the railroad-splice.
A represents a portion of the rail, and B is the splice, fastened together by the bolt C.
Upon the bolt C is placed a washer, G, which, on its upper side, is provided with grooves, radiating from the centre, as seen i-n g. 2.
The washer IG may be prevented from turning Aon the bolt by projections on its under side, which should enter recessesrformed upon thevsplice, or the bolt may be so formed at the point where the washer goes that the washer cannot turn.
The nut D is, on its under side, provided with grooves, radiating from the centre, which groovescorrespond with the grooves on the upper side of the washer.'
When the nut is tightened, care should be taken that atleast two of' the grooves, one on each side of the nut, are directly over or against ,two of the grooves in the washer, and a spring-key, H, constructed as shown in iig. 3, is then inserted in said two grooves, which eectually locks the nut, and prevents it from unscre\,ving.
In some instances the washer G may be dispensed with, in which case the splice B is grooved, andy the bale H inserted, which locks the nut.
Having thus fully described my invention, vWhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination o f the nut D, washer G, with its projections, and springkey H, all constructed as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 2d day of November, 1869. MORGAN PAYNE.
