specification of Leiters ratent. PatentedJ an 10, 1911.
' Application tiled May 7,1910. Serial No. 559,870.`
y To all whom 'it my conccrn:
- Be it known that I, JULES HIPPOLYTE Con- 'rIrsr, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 'lliornhill Houses, Barnsbury, London, England, have invented new and useful ,Improvements in Turbines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to turbines,y and particularly those in which the actuating ttuid travels with the rotor through a large portion of its rotation 'before being discharged, and has for its object to avoid the loss of kinetic energy of the actuating tiuid resulting from its inipingein nt and consequent friction with the curve( 'surface of the casing or chamber inclosing ther rotor.
According to tlieinveiition al ring or circular shield is attach'edtothe outer extremities of the rotor blades so as to cover niore or less of the inner surface ot the' inelosing easing, the tangential jet, jets or tiow of'actuat.-
ing fluid impinging against the moving ring as it rotates with the rotor instead of againstthe stationary curved surface of the inclosing casing.
The ring or shield may have more or less tangential apertures to allow a certain amount ot the actuating tluid to. pass through in the direction desired for the purpose ot favoring rotation or diminishing the tluid density or pressure inthe space between the outer peripher ot' the said ringand the inner surface of the chamber. 'lhe ring may be formed of separate pieces or blades so disposed as to cause the traveling fluid/'to be redirectial at, say, a slight inward angle to thel tangent from one such separate piece or blade'on to the next. one forward, owing to the fluid velocity being greater than that of the rotor, thus avoiding the fluid in a state ol velocity or velocity and pressure `coming iin direct. contact with the said staf said casingfa.
modifications. Figs. 6 and 7 arevieivs simi- 4lar to Figs. l and 2 respectivelyillustrating another modification.
. a is the outeil inclosing casing yof `the turbine and I), 'b aretlie rotor blades carried by the boss c on the shaft al and inelosed by the e, are the apertures in the casing 'a for the passage ofI the fiui'dfforl actuating the rotor.
is the ring or circular shield attached to the'outenextreniitiesof the blades I), b by the .use of which ring the tiu'idinipingi'nv against vthe said bladeswillube' prevented troni-striking the inner curved surface of the casing awvlierebv the consequent loss of energyis avoided. V e. 1n Figs. 1 and 'Qthe ring fis shown as being ot rectangular forni in 'eross section, while in I1`ig.` 3 it is of a somewhaty crescent forni. 'f f I g, ,r/ Fig. tare the tangential apertures with which t-lie ring f may be provided to allow the fluid which has passedbetween the ring and the casing to be drawn within the ring by suction due to the higher velocity of the fluid passing through and actuating tlie rotor.
Fig. 5 illustrates the arrangement in which the ring is formed of a series of separate pieces or blades la., L. 'lliese blades h, L are arranged tangentially as shown and in such relation that a portion of Vthe steam passing through the rotor is redirected from the inner surface of one blade to the inner surface of an adjacentl blade and thus in addition to being prevented from coming into direct contactwith the Curved' surface of the chamber a assists rotation.l
ln Figs. and 7 z', 'i are tangential apertures Aformed in the inner curved surface of the casing a by which jets of tluid may be directed on to the outer surface of the ring f to prevent any condeusatioii of Huid that has passed into the space bet-Ween the said ,ring and the casinga, and which Would tend to retard the movement ot the ring, and also to assist 1n propelling the latter. These Jets 11i the' drawing are ted 'from a common passage j, but they may be' fed in any otherv manner.1 In the said Fig. 6,- the ring f is shown solid but it inay be formed with tangential apertures, as in the arrangement shown in Fig. 4.
Having now particularly described and 'ring or-shieid attached to the outer'extremil in the ring attached to the rotor blades su the purposedescribed. 1.5
tial y as and for the purpose set ascertained the nature of my said .invention and in whatvmanner the vsame is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is 1. In a fluid pressure turbine having a ties of the rotor blades, tangential openin s s'tantially as, and for the purpose setiorth. 2. In a fluid pressure turbine having a ring or shield, attached to the4 outer extremi` ties of the rotor blades, the combination with the said ring of a series of separate pieces or blades, substantially as, and or 3. In a iuid'pressure turbine having a 7,'In a fluid bination with t e casing,' provided with' ring or' shield attached to the outer extremities ofthe rotor blades, apertures in the outer casing whereby jets of fluid are directed on to the' outer periphery of the ri'n surroundingI the -rotor blades sulistanort ` 4'. In a fluid pressureturbine, the combination with a casingprovidedwith axial passages for the pressure huid, of a rotor within-said casing rovided with. blades in line with said axia passages, a rin surrounding said blades and provided wit -pas'` sages extending from the inner face of said ring to the outer face thereof and communi- -catingwith the space between-the rotor and ,the casing.v
casing, the portions of said rin between said passages therein', having su stantially tangential faces for directing the Huid from one face'to another.
6. In a Huid pressure turbine, the combinain said casing provided with blades in line with said axlal assages, a ring surrounding said bladesan -provided with :Sieglurality' of separated tangentially disp blades,
having tangentia the outer face of said ring,
ressure turbine, the -comaxial passa s for the pressure fluid 4of a rotor provi ed with bla es inline with said passages, a ring surrounding said blades andconnected with the rotor, said casin being provided with tangentiallyldispose passages communicating with the space between the outer periphery ofsaid rlng and in the casiihg 8. Ina bination with the casing, provided with axial passa es for the pressure fluid, of a rotor provi ed with' blades in'line with said passages, a' ring surrounding said blades and .connected with the rotor, said casing ,being provided with tangentially disposed pas' sages communicating with the space between .the outer lperiphery 'of said ring and said rotor, land a common passage communicatingwith said tangential passages, and means for supplying fluid under pressure to said common passage.
