COMBINED LOCK AND LATCH.
To all whom 'it' may concern:
Be it known that I, EDsoN GRANGER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at ljiatkins, in the county of Schuyler and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Locks and Latches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined lock and latch, and has for an object to provide mechanism of this character including a spring controlled bolt, a movable actuating member for the bolt and to construct the said actuating member whereby it can be effectively engaged with the bolt to hold the same in an extended position. c
ln the drawings, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the sevv eral views Figure 1 is a horizontal section through a portion of a door showing my combined lock and latch applied thereto, the said lock and latch being shown in full lines. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the combined lock and latch in section. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing thel actuating member moved into locking engagement with the bolt. Fig. a is a detail perspective view of the actuating member. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of the sleeve. Fig. 6 is a transverse section taken on the line 6--6 of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the actuating member engaged with the bolt to move it to a retracted position. Fig. 8 is a view taken at right angles to Fig. 2 showing the bolt in full lines. Fig. 9 is a detail section through a portion of the casing.
My improved combined lock and latch consists of a casing 1 which is constructed to fit the mortise in the door, as shown. This casing is formed to provide the bolt-receiving passage 2 for receiving the keeper-engaging portion of the sliding bolt 8. The bolt is slotted, as shown at 4f, to iit the guide 5 of the casing, and as illustrated, a spring 6 is confined between the bolt and the said stop to exert its tension against the former to hold it normally in an extended position. This bolt is formed at its inner end to provide a substantially yoke-like frame 7 which supports a vertical roller 8.
The side walls of the casing are formed to provide alining substantially keyhole slots 9, the portions 11 of the slots being designed to receive the correspondingly formed slidable sleeve 12. The portions 13 of the slots form Specification of Letters Patent.

keyways for a longitudinally extending key or rib 111 at one side of the said sleeve. The purpose of the said key is to engage in the keyways to prevent rotation of the sleeve. lThe sleeve is hollow, as shown, and formed therein is a camslot 15 having oppositely inclined cam surfaces 16, as shown. A combined keeper and actuating member is slidably and rotatably mounted in the sleeve, and as illustrated, it is formed to provide a cam slot 18 having surfaces 19 conforming in configuration with the corresponding cam surfaces in the sleeve. rlhe said actuating member is formed also to provide a slot 20 for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
ln the normal position of the elements forming my improved mechanism, the actuating member is arranged in the sleeve so that the cam slots therein register with the correspondingly formed slots in the actuating members and under tension of the spring for 'the locking bolt the roller of such bolt is normally seated in the cam slots `in the sleeve and actuating member respectively and at the points of intersection of the walls of the slots so that the operator may press upon the sliding sleeve from either side of the'door to cause the cam surfaces of the sleeve and actuating member respectively to bear against the roller and to move the bolt to a retracted position. Immediately upon release of the spring the same will seek its normal position under tension of the spring tension bolt.
The actuating member is formed at one end to provide a manipulating knob or button 21 and at the opposite end the sliding sleeve is formed to provide a manipulating button or knob 22 which is formed to provide a keyway 23. The actuating member is provided with a threaded extremity 24k which extends normally in the keyway of the knob 22. A tubular key 25 is designed to iit the keyway of the said knob 24, and as illust-rated, it is interior-ly threaded to it the threaded extremity of the actuating member. The opposite end of the key is formed to provide a milled head 26. The slidable sleeve has formed therein a substantially U-shaped slot 27 having arms 28 and 29 which are connected with each other by an arm 30 which lat-ter extends longitudinally of the sleeve and substantially at right angles with respect to the arm portions 28 and 29. The construction described is such that the operator may move the actuating member to a position to cause the pin 31 of such member to eXtend into the arm 29 of the slot 27, this being the position of the pin 31 When the bolt is engaged With the sliding sleeve and the actuating member respectively to permit them to be moved in either direction. I/Vhen it is desired to prevent Withdrawal of the bolt of the lock the actuating member is moved to cause the pin 31to be extended into the arm 28 of the slot 27. In this position of the pin the actuating member will be moved to cause the slot 2O therein to assume a position Where it will receive the roller of the bolt and securely engaged therewith so as to prevent movement whatsoever in either of the sliding sleeve or the actuating member. When it is desired to move the roller out of the slot 20, the actuating member is rotated to cause the Walls of said slot 20 to bear against and to moveY said roller to a position in the casing to permit such sliding movement of the actuating member that Will position the roller Where it may be engaged in the slot 18. In view'of the provision of the keyWays in the side Walls of the casing and the key on the sliding sleeve which fits the said keyvvays the sleeve Will be eiectively held against rotation during adjustment of the actuating member.
I claim:

2. A lock comprising a sliding bolt, an actuating member formed to engage thesaid bolt to move the same toa retracted position, a sliding sleeve supporting the actuating member, the said actuating member being formed for locking engagement With the bolt, and means on the actuating member for engaging the said sliding sleeve so` as to v hold the latter against movement.
v 3. A lock comprising a spring controlled sliding bolt, a sliding sleeve, an actuating member supported by the sleeve, the said n actuating member having a cam slot formed therein, a roller supported by the bolt and l' normallyV extending into the cam slot, the
said actuating member having a slot formed therein to receive the roller of the said bolt so as to hold the sleeve against sliding move-l ment, and means on the actuating member and on the said sleeve operating to hold the actuating member in its adjusted position.
4:. A lock comprising a spring tension bolt, a slidably mounted" sleeve, an actuating member mounted in said sleeve for sliding movement and for rotary movement, the said actuating member being formed for locking engagement with the bolt to hold the sleeve against sliding movement, and means on the actuating member and on said sleeve coperating to hold the actuating member in its adjusted position.
5. A lock comprising a spring tension bolt, a casing for said bolt, a sleeve slidable through the casing, an actuating member slidably mounted in said sleeve, the said actuating member having a slot formed therein and presenting companion cam surfaces for engaging the bolt and for moving it to a retracted position in sliding movement of the sleeve, the said actuating member being formed for locking engagement Wit-h the bolt, and means for holding the actuating member in its adjusted position.
6. A lock comprising a spring controlled bolt, an actuating member having a cam slot therein, the said actuating member being mounted for rotary and for sliding move-v ments, a slidably mounted sleeve supporting the said actuating member, the said actuating member being formed for locking engagement with the bolt and being further formed for locking engagement With the sleeve to hold the latter against sliding movement, and a key removably fitting the sleeve and formed to engage the said actuating member so as to permit adjustment of the latter in the sleeve.
