UNITED STATES PATEN OFFICE.
JOHN rIALL, or WATERTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS.
TOY SAFE on BANK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 98,055, dated December 2l, 1869; antedated December 7, 1869.
To all whom, 2115 may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HALL, of Watertown, of the county of Middlesex andState of Massachusetts, have invented anew and useful or Improved Toy Safe or Bank; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and vrepresented in the accompanying drawings, of Which- Figure lis a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a vertical section of it, the bank in such igures being exhibited as open. Fig. 3 is a section of it in a closed state.
In these drawings, A denotesabox, which, as represented, is in the form of a small house, it being provided with a hatchway or opening, a, in its top or roof. To this hatchway or opening there is hinged a cover, B, having a platform, C, extended from it at right angles, and arranged with respect to it in manner as shown. When the cover stands in a vertical position, the platform is horizontal and serves to close the opening in the top ot the safe or box A. There extends from the top of the `cover B a heavy projection, D, which, besides other purposes, is intended as a counter-balance to hold the cover in an upright position. A cord or liexible Wire, E, fastened to the top of this projection, goes down through a hole, d, at the top of the box or safe, and thence is .carried through another hole, e, in the front of the box, a knob, f, being fastened to the end of the said cord or Wire. There is placed upon the platform C a gure, F,Which may be termed the cash- The head g of this gure is pivoted to the body h, so as to'be capable of being turned horizontally thereon when the said body is in an upright position. In other Words, the head h is supported on a spindle, z', which goes down through the body. This spindle, at its lower end, is provided with an arm, 7a, which projects horizontally from it, the Same being as shown in Fig. 4, which' is a cross-section of the cashier. A pendulum, Z, suspended from one side of the cashier, goes through an eye in the arm. If now We suppose the cover of the box, bank, or safe to be down, and We desire to raise it for the purpose of putting money into the safe, We have only to lay hold of the knob f and pull on it. By so doing We shall raise the cover into an upright position and bring the cashier out of the hatchway or hole in theltop of the box. In front of the cashier there may be a small tablet, m. If now a piece of money be laid on the tablet and the Weight of the piece be sufcient'to overbalance the Weight tending to hold the cover in an upright positiomwhch should be the case when the lightest Weight coin is employed, the cashier, bythe excess of weight of the coin, will be caused to descend into the box, and the cover B will fall with him and close the opening a. When the. cover is raised, the said opening will be Vclosed by the platform C. For removal of the money from the box, there may be a hole or port on the bottom thereof, such hole being provided with a cover held in place by one or more screws or other proper devices. The act of throwing up the cashier and the cover will set the pendulum oscillating in a manner to cause the head of the cashier to have a quick reciprocating rotary movement. The Whole constitutes a toy not only calculated to afford pleasure to a child, but to be of use as a means of storing small pieces ceive.
I claiml. The combination and arrangement of the platform C with the box A, its cover B, and the means, as described, (or the equivalent therefor,) for raising the cover.
2. The combination of the figure F or cashier with the box and the cover, or the same and the platform, provided with means, as described, for operating such cover in manner as explained.
3. The combination of the pendulum Z, the spindle t', and its arm k with thehead and body ofthe igure or cashier F, combined and to the box, so as to operate as specified.
JOHN HALL.
