WAGON-TOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 27, 1910.
Application filed July 7, 1910. Serial No. 570,838.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, FRANK Galena, a l citizen of the United States, residing at of Illinois, have invented a new and'useful Wagon-Top, of which the following is a specification,
It is the object of this invention to provide, in a simple and merchantable form, a folding top, adapted readily to be placed upon, and removed from, farm wagons and other vehicles which are provided with upstanding sides.
Another object of the invention is to provide a removable wagon top adapted to rest upon the upper edges of a wagon box, and to adapt the said top for removable connection with a seat, whereby the seat may constitute a means for maintaining the top in place upon the box of the wagon.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for controlling the pivotal movement of the top.
Another object of the invention is to increase the stability and wearing qualities of a device of the class mentioned.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2 is a fragmental top plan; Fig. 3 is a fragmental transverse section; and Fig. 4 is an edge elevation of the intermediate bow, a portion thereof being broken away, in order that certain structural details may more clearly appear.
In the drawings, a wagon box is shown and denoted by the numeral 1, the numeral 2 denoting specifically the side walls of the box. The wagon box constitutes no part of the present invention, and, in the showing of the drawing in this respect may be regarded as typical only.
In carrying out the invention, a pair of plates 3 are provided, adapted to be applied to the opposite sides 2 of the wagon box', upon the exterior of these sides. The invention includes two duplicate mechanisms, one of which is shown in Fig. 3. The description will be confined to one side of the device, it being understood without further explanation, that the' description will apply with equal propriety to the other side of the structure.
Spaced standards 4 are secured to the plate 3, and are adapted to upstand slightly above the upper edge of the said plate. As
' Upon its outer end, the rod Fig. 3, these standards 4 are bent sharply upon themselves as at 5, their ends being fashioned into hooks 6 adapted to be disposed within the wagon box. A bar 7 is secured, as shown at 8, in the bent portions 5 of the standards 4, this bar 7 being adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the side wall 2 of the wagon box as shown.
A seat 9 is provided, this seat being of any desired form. around the ends of the seat 9 and secured to the seat, the said straps being. spaced apart from the ends of the seat, as denoted by the numeral 11. Recalling that but one side of the structure is shown in Fig. 3, it will be seen that the straps 10 maybe engaged, in their intermediate portions 11, in books 6.
Retaining elements 12 unite the plates 14 with the plate 3, these retaining elements 12 serving as pivotal mountings for a top com prising a front how 15, an intermediate bow 16, and a rear bow 17, the ends of which are disposed between the plates 14 and 3. Toggles 18 connect the intermediate bow 16 with the bows 15 and 17, and the several bows carry a foldable cover 19. Secured to the intermediate bow 16 is a plate 20, provided with an outstanding boss 21 in which there is a flaring opening 22, extended through the outer end face of the boss, so that the boss is given an annular form. A rod 23 is mounted in the opening 22 in the boss, and is extended through the intermediate bow 16, as seen to best advantage in Fig. 4. 23 is provided with a head 24. The inner end of the rod 23 is threaded to receive awing nut 25, a washer 29 being, if desired, interposed between the wing nut 25 and the inner face of the intermediate bow 16. There is an opening in the head 24, in which an arm 26 is adapted to slide. The lower end of this arm 26 is pivoted, as at 27, to the plate 3, adjacent the lower rear corner of the said plate, a wear member 28 being interposed between the arm 26 and the plate 3.
The operation of the device is as follows. It will be seen that carrying members, comprising the plates 3, the standards 4 and the rods 7, may readily be mounted in place, together with the bows and the cover, upon the upper edge of the wagon box 1, the bars 7 resting upon the upper edges of the wagon box, and the hooks 6 depending between the side walls 2 of the wagon box. The seat may then be mounted in place, the spaced portions 11 of the straps 10 engaging in the hooks 6. It will be seen that the weight of Straps 10 are extended the seat 9, together of course, with the weight of the occupant, will serve to hold the cover securely in place. \Vhen it is desired to re move the cover, all that is necessary is, in the first instance, to remove the seat 9 from the hooks 6, and subsequently to lift the carrying members from the wagon box 1. The construction, therefore, is such that the cover may be placed upon a "ehicle and removed therefrom, in a very short space of time.
When the wing nut 25 is rotated, the head- 24 of the rod 23 will move into the opening 22 of the boss 21, the arm 26 being drawn against two oppositely disposed points upon the periphery of the boss 21; and thus the upper end of the arm 26 will be securely connected with the intermediate bow 16, to retain the cover in any desired position.
When the Wing nut 25 is loosened, the arm 26 will slide freely through the opening in the head 24, permitting the cover to be swung either forwardly or rearwardly. Of course, as will be well understood by an inspection of the drawings, the toggles 18 may be manipulated to permit the cover 19 to be folded together in the ordinary manner.
It is to be understood that the drawings show typical embodiments merely and that minor changes may be made, without sacrificing the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed is In a device of the class described, plates adapted to be applied to the outer sides of a wagon box; standards rising from the plates and bent to overhang the upper edges of the box, the ends of the standards being fashioned into hooks adapted to be disposed within the box; bars secured in the bent portions of the standards, and adapted to rest upon the upper edges of the box; a seat terminally provided with straps extended across its ends to engage the hooks; and a top carried by the plates.
In testimony that I 'claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
