UNITED STATES PATIENT FFICE.
ANDREW J. AUNE, or MILTON, Noam aurora.
LANTERN-CARRIER.
Application le March 26, 1909.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known t-hat I, ANDREW J. UNn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milton. in the countv of Cavalier, State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lantern-Carriers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others slrilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a lantern carrier and more particularly to the class of movably supported lantern carriers.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a lantern carrier which is simple in construction. readily and easily manipulated, thoroughly eflicient in operation and economical and inexpensive in the manufacture.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawings which disclose the preferred form of embodiment of the invention to enable those skilled in the art to carry the invention into practice, and as brought out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the carrier. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. el is a detail perspective view of the lantern hook.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
In the drawings the numeral designates generally a sheath the same formed of a single piece of sheet metal bent to form an inverted U-shaped device and to provide spaced cheek plates 6, which latter are held in spaced rigid relation to each other by bolt fasteners 7, engaging the same and arranged at intervals concentrically thereof. Suitably mounted between the cheek plates 6, to form a dust proofclosure peripherally of the sheath 5, is a U-shaped or curved plate S, which latter may be re* moved to gain access to the interior of the sheath.
Rotatably mounted in the sheath 5, between the cheek plates 6, thereof is a wind- Specifcation of Letters Patent.

ing and unwinding drum or pulley 9, which is of hollow construction and is loosely journaled upon a spindle 10, which latter has its bearings centrally in the cheek plates (3, and the ends of which spindle project a distance beyond the latter.
Disposed within the pulley or drum 9, is a coiled tension spring l1, the same having one end secured to the pulley or drum 9,
and its opposite end secured to the spindle 10, so that upon rotating the spindle the said spring 11, can be wound to hold the drum under tension when the spindle is locked against rotation in a manner as will be hereinafter described.
Connect-ed to one exteriorV face of the sheath 5, by a pivot 12, is a catch or locking plate 13, the latter containing a notch 11i, to engage a reduced portion 15 adjacent one end of the spindle 10, to hold the same normally against rot-ation. The said catch or locking plate 13, is adapted to be secured by one of the bolt fasteners 7, when in position for holding the spindle against rotation.
Secured to opposite sides of the sheath 5, near its upper end are hanger bars 16, with inwardly converging angular bearing eX- tremities 17, projecting beyond the sheath at opposite sides thereof and between which bearing extremities are j ournaled grooved rollers or pulleys 18, which latter travel upon a trolley or suspended wire 19, which latter is adapted to be connected at opposite ends to the side walls of a room or to the rafters of a barn (not shown).
Connected to the drum or pulley 9, at its periphery and adapted to be wound thereon and unwound therefrom is a suspension chain or-cable 20, to which latter is connected a hook 21, the same being adapted to detachably support a lantern 22, which may be of any well known or ordinary construction.
Adjustably mounted upon the suspension chain or cable 20, is a stop collar 23, which is adapted to contact with a tube 24, projecting from and integral with the curved plate 8, and through which tube passes the suspension chain or cable 20, as it is wound and unwound from the drum or pulley within the sheath.
The spindle 10, is provided with a reduced extremity 25, which is adapted to be engaged by a tool or key (not shown), to enable the proper winding of the spring for tensioning the drum or pulley so as to effect the rewinding ol the chain or cable upon thc latter when the lantern has been brought to a lowered position.
To lower the lantern it is necessary to pull upon the chain or cable 20, until the lantern has been lowered to the desired degree and the chain and upon advancing in one direction or the other the carrier will be caused to travel upon the trolley or snspenslrni wire to the desired distance.
That is claimed is f The herein described lantern carrier cornprisinp` a casing consisting,l ot an inverted U-shaped section and a U-shaped piece removably and snugly secured to the lll-shaped section and forming a bottoni wall and end walls therefor, having openings in its sides, said casing being further provided with an opening in its lower side, a depending tube at said opening, a hollow druin in said casing having` central open ings coincident with those in the sides of the casing and druin and provided near its ends at points on the outer sides of the casing with vertical non-circular portions, a spring within the drinn having one cnd attached thereto and the other end attached to said shait, a chain extending` through the bottoni opening of the casing and attached to the druin and partly wound thereon by the action or' said spring, said chain having;` a lantern attaching device at its pendent end and also provided with a screw adjustable collar stop to engage the terminal oit' the tube on the lower side oi" the easing', a horizontally disposed plate detachably secured on one side of the casing` and havinga locking notch for engagement with one of the reduced portions of said shaft, a pair ot hanger bars secured to the sides of the oasv ing, said hanger bars being inwardly bentat the non-circular portions of the casing' and having` portions disposed in substantially Vertical planes and terininatino above the casing', and wheels journaled between the terminals of the hanger bars and adapted to ride on a supporting cable.
ln testimony whereof, I aillx iny signature, in presence or' two witnesses.
