To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. OASSIDY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Cranbrook, in the county of Kootenay, British Columbia, Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Brackets, of which the following is a specification.
It is desirable in fixtures for supporting incandescent electric lamps that the same be adjustable both vertically and laterally to suit the requirements of the user and also to provide a fixture in which the cord or conductor is concealed and protected.
The present invention provides a bracket possessing the features herein enumerated and which will admit of lengthening and shortening the cord to which the lamp bulb is attached, so that in addition to swinging the point of suspension of said cord in or out to any position within the range of movement of the bracket the lamp may likewise be elevated or lowered at any adjusted.

The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the appended claims.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawing, by the same reference characters.
The fixture comprises an upper arm 1, a lower arm 2, a vertical member 3, and a horizontal member 4:, the latter comprising inner and outer sections having their inner ends connected by means of a swivel joint 5, so that the outer member may be swung to any angular position with reference to the inner member, the opposing ends of the members having lateral extensions so as to throw the two members in different planes, whereby the lower member may swing beneath the upper member. The arms 1 and 2 are provided at their inner ends with base forming a part 1s a side view I provided near their outer pieces having openings to receive suitable fastenings whereby they may be attached to a wall or other support and said arms are ends upon their opposing sides with sockets to receive the ends of the vertical member 3, which are fitted therein to admit of the vertical member turning freely. The inner end of the horizontal member 4 is connected to the ver tical member 3 near the lower end thereof,

whereby the horizontal member 4 may be folded against the wall or other support to which the bracket may be attached. The several parts of the bracket are formed of tubing and are adapted to receive the electric cord 6, which is hidden from view and protected. thereby.
A spool 7is mounted upon the outer end 'of the horizontal member at and is connected thereto by means of a spiral spring 8. A series of pawls 9, pivotally connected to an end of the spool 7 are adapted to cooperate with notches 10 formed in the sides of the member 4 so as to hold the spool in an adjusted'position. The lamp bulb 11 is attached to the lower end of an electric cord 12, which latter is adapted to wind upon the spool 7 and which is in electric connection with the lamp cord 6 by means of a rotary contact 18. As the lamp cord 12 is unwound from the spool 7, by pulling downward upon the lamp 11, the spring 8 is wound and when the lamp reaches the desired position it is held momentarily to ad mit of one of the pawls 9 dropping into a notch 10 so as to hold the spool from turning backward. When it is required to elevate the lamp the same is given a smart pull, thereby disengaging the pawl 9 from the notch 10 and releasing the spring 8, which turns the spool 7 so as to wind the cord 12 thereon and when the lamp reaches the desired elevation it is retained in position by permitting one or more of the pawls 9 to engage cooperating notches 10 in a manner well understood. The rotary contact comprises two members 14 and 15, the one fixed with reference to the horizontal member 4 and the other fixed with reference to the spool 7 and rotatable therewith, each member comprising electrically insulated contacts which are in electric connection with a strand of the respective electric cord. A spring 16 normally holds the two contacts "i4 and is in engagement an the tension of said spring may be regulated by a set 7 the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the embodiment'thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such change may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended hereto. 7 7
Having thus described the invention what is claimed asnew, is
1. In an electric lamp fixture, the combinationof spaced arms, a member supported between said armsand rotatable with reference thereto, a second member projected outwardly from the first mentioned member and comprising sections which are offset and connected by a swivel joint, the several parts being tubular, an electric conductor passing through said parts, a spool rotatably mounted upon the outer end of said second member, a lamp cord connected with the spool, a

2. An electric lamp fixture comprising upper and lower arms having sockets upon their inner sides near their outer ends, a vertical member fitted in said sockets and adapted to turn therein, a horizontal member extended outwardly from said vertical member and comprising sections having their inner ends offset and connected by means of a swivel joint, an electric conductor passed through the several parts, a spool rotatably mounted upon the outer end of the horizontal member, a spiral spring connecting the spool with its supporting member, a ratchet and pawl connection between the spool and horizontal member, a lamp cord connected with the spool and adapted to wind thereon, and a rotary contact between the lamp cord and electric conductor.
