To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OMAR F. NEFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milford, in the county of Kosciusko and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Head-Rests, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in head rests, and has for its object the provision of a device of that kind adapted to be placed in front of a seat so that a person occupying the seat may, by leaning for ward place his forehead on the rest, whereby the comfort of a person may be added to and especially an invalid who cannot rest by reclining backward or lying down.
Another object is the provision of a device provided with a pair of arm rests adapted to support the arms of the user while his head is inclined forward and bearing on the rest.

Numerals of reference are employed to designate the parts of-the device throughout.
Vhat will subsequently be termed a tubular socket is designated by the numeral 5 and may be of any suitable length and has pivoted to its lower end portion a plurality of legs 6. Connection between the legs 6 and upper end portion of the tubular socket 5 is established by means of struts 7, the opposite ends of which are pivoted to the legs and socket. The function of these struts is to hold the legs 6 rigid when the latter are opened outwardly so as to support the device.
What will subsequently be termed a standard is designated by the numeral 8. This member is circular in cross section and of a size to slidingly fit within the tubular socket 5. The upper end portion of the tubular socket 5 is provided with a radial opening, into which is threaded a set screw 9, this member binding on the standard and serving to secure the latter in any of its adusted positions. The upper end portion of the standard is provided with a pair of diverging arms designated by the numerals 12 and 13, and fixedly secured to the extremities of the arms 12 and 13 is a forehead rest 14:. The latter is oblong in contour and is suitably padded and covered with soft material.
Fixedly secured to the upper end portions of the standard and below the arms, arethe middle portions of a pair of plates 15 and 16. Extending through from the opposite end portions of each of these plates are a pair of bracket arms 17 and 18, the outer or free ends of which are curved upwardly as shown at 19 and 20.
A pair of slides are designated by the numerals 21 and 22. These members are each preferably formed of a length of metallic rod and are provided adjacent to their opposite ends with openings for the reception of the bracket arms 17 and 18, while their opposite ends extend beyond the outer sides of the said arms.
What will subsequently be termed a pair of arm rests are designated by the numerals 23 and 24. These members are preferably formed of single pieces of stout steel wire bent into substantially a U-shape and thence slightly curved, the distance between the opposite limbs 25 and 26 of which will be somewhat less than the diameter of the human arm. The limbs 25 and 26 adjacent their free ends, are offset as shown at 27 and 28, and terminate in eyes for the reception of the terminals of the slides 21 and 22. The distance between the limbs 25 and 26 at the offset portions will be somewhat less than the distance between the bracketarms 17 and 18, so that when the slides are at the upwardly curved portions 19 and 20 of the bracket arms, and the arm supports extend vertically downward by lifting the said arm supports until the offset portions 27 and 28 are above the upturned extensions 19 and 20 of the bracket arms, the arms may be moved bodily inward until the slides abut against the plates 15 and 16 whereby the offset portions 27 and 28 of the arm rests will impinge on the brackets and the arms will be supported at substantially right angles to the standard 8, so that when the forehead bears on the cushion 14 the forearms of the user may bear on the arm supports 23 and 24.
By reference to the drawings it will be seen that adjustably secured to the standard 8 and directly below the plates 15 and 16 is a collar 29 provided with a radial arm 30, the said arm 30 supporting at its outer end a horizontally disposed ring 31, which receives a cuspidor or other suitable receptacle 28 the latter being so positioned that it may be used for any desired purpose without the necessity of the user of the rest changing the position of the forehead or arms.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a device which is comparatively simple in structure and inexpensive in manufacture, embodying few parts and these so arranged that the danger of derangement will be reduced to a minimum.
I claim 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a standard carrying a head rest; of laterally extending bracket arms secured to the standard and located below the head rest, slides arranged on the bracket arms, and substantially U-shaped arm rests pivoted to the slides and movable into engagement with the said bracket arms to be held thereby at an angle to the standard.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a standard and a head rest carried thereby; of a pair of movable and substantially U-shaped arm supports, and means connecting the arm supports with the standards and adapted to maintain the said arm supports parallel with or at an angle to the standard.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a standard and a head rest carried thereby; of a double pair of bracket arms extending from opposite sides of the standard, and a pair of substantially U-shaped arm supports slidingly fitted upon said bracket arms and movable to positions at substantially right angles to or parallel with the said standard.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a standard and a head rest carried thereby, a double pair of bracket arms extending from opposite sides of said standard, slides arranged on said bracket arms, and a pair of substantially U-shaped arm supports pivoted to said slides and movable at right angles and into engage ment with the said bracket arms.
