To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES W. SIMPSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Loudon, in the county of lLoudon and State of Tennessee, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Books, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in check books, and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of the invention is to provide a device of the character specified, consisting of a cover or case of suitable length for easy carriage in the pocket, and provided with means for holding a plurality of pads of checks in such posit-ion that the checks proper will be fiat and without folds o1' creases.

Referring to the drawings forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the book with the cover open and with the pads in place, Fig. 2 is an edge View with the cover closed, Fig. 3 is a perspective view with the cover open and with one pad removed, Fig. 4 is a plan view of the holding device, Fig. 5 is an edge yview of the saine, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modifled form with the cover open and with the pads attached to the cover by the staples.

The embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, consists of a cover which may be constructed of any suitable or desired material, and may be ornamented or finished to suit the taste of the holder, being preferably leather bound, and consisting of a back 1 having at one end a stub flap 2 for the attachment of the pads, and at the other end a cover flap 3.

The cover is arranged to fold on the lines 4f of the junction of the flaps with the back, a transverse folding line being provided at such lines. A plate 5 preferably of sheet metal is secured to the inner face of the flap 2 near the free end of the same by rivets 6 or any other suitable means, and the said plate is provided near each side edge of the flap with a holding device to be described. Each of the said holding devices consists of a pair of resilient tongues 7 and 8, the said tongues being formed from the material of the plate, and being offset upwardly from the plane of the plate as indicated at 9. In the present construction, the plate is provided near each end with a pair of parallel Specification of Letters Patent.

The check consists of the usual strip having at one end the check proper 11, and at the other the stub 12, preferably separated from each other by the usual line of perforations 13, and the strips are bound in pads by staples 141, passing through the strip at the stub end. above the upper face of the plate as shown j at 15 in Fig. 5, and each pad is provided, between the staples with a transverse opening 16 for receiving the extended end of one of the rivets.

The pads are connected with the plate by means of the rivets and the tongues, the said tongues passing between the staples and the pad, and the rivet engaging the opening 1G. Two pads A and B are connected with the back at the same time, one pad B being connected with the tongues 7 and the rivet adjacent thereto, and the other pad A with the tongues 8 and the rivet adjacent to the said tongues, and the free end of one pad extends toward the cover flap, while the free end of the other extends in the opposite direction.

The flaps being opened out in line, the pad A is placed in position with the printed side up, that is with the blank side toward the cover' andthe pad B with the printed side down, that is with the printed side toward the cover and when in place a liexible and preferably elastic band 17 is placed around the pad A and the cover at the line of folding et between the back and the fiap 3. The pad B and the flap 2 are now folded over on the back, as shown in Fig. 1, thus bringing the printed side of the pad B upwardly and with the check portion 11 on the inner face of the cover, the stub and the Hap 2 overlying the check portion of the pad A. A second flexible and preferably elastic band 1S is then placed around the pad B and the cover at the line of fold between the back and the flap 2, after which the cover is folded over onto the back and onto the flap 2 as shown in Fig. 1. The book is now of the length of the check proper, it being understood that the check proper and stub are of the proper length to fit the cover when arranged as specified. j

When a check is to be written, the cover is opened as shown in Fig. l, together with the check portion of the pad, and the entire length ot the strip is exposed, so that both check and stub may be filled in. lVhen the pad B is exhausted, checks of the pad A are used, the stub ldap 2 being also opened when a check is written.

The check portion of each strip is approximately twice the length of the stub, so that when t-he two stubs are arranged end to end, they will occupy approximately the same space as the check. lVhen the checks of a pad are used, the stubs may be disengaged, and will be in convenient shape for tiling.

In Fig. 6 the pads are connected directly to the stub flap bythe staples 14C, the plate being dispensed with. The construction is however the same in other respects. lith this form, the cover may be used but once or it may be used several times by using care in removing the staples. It will be evident that the pads may be attached to the cover by other means instead of staples, if desired.

I claiml. A book of the character specified, comprising a cover consisting of a back having a cover flap at one end and a stub flap at the other, a plate arranged transversely of the inner tace ot the stub iiap near its free end, rivets passing through the stub flap and the plate at its transverse center and extending above the face of the plate, said plate having a pair of upwardly offset tongues at each side of the rivets extending transversely of the plate, the members ot each pair of tongues facing each other, and pads of checks, each check consisting of a stub and a check proper, partially separated from each other, staples binding the checks at the stub end, said staples extending transversely of the pad and engaging the tongues, each pad having an opening between the staples for engagement by t-he extended end of a rivet, said stubs being of a length to extend from the innermost tongues to the junction of the stubiiap and back, and the check proper being of the same length as the cover flap, said pads being arranged with their stub ends adjacent to each other and extending in opposite directions, and elastic bands encircling each pad and the cover at the junction of the stub and check.

A book of the character specified, comprising a cover consisting of a back having a cover flap at one end and a stub flap at the other, a plate arranged transversely of the inner face of the stub flap near its free end, rivets passing through the stub flap and the plate at its transverse center and extending above the face of the plate, said plate having a pair of upwardly offset tongues at each side of the rivets extending transversely of the plate, the members of each pair of tongues facing each other, and pads of checks, each check consisting of a stub and a check proper, partially separated from each other, staples binding the checks i at the stub end, said staples extending transversely of the pad and engaging the tongues, each pad having an opening between the staples for engagement by the extended end of a rivet, said stubs being of a length to extend from the innermost tongues to the junction of the stub flap and back, and the check proper being of the same length as the cover iap, said pads being arranged with their stub ends adjacent to each other and extending in opposite directions.

A book of the character specified, coinprising a cover consisting of a back having a cover flap at one end and a stub flap at the other, a plate arranged transversely of the inner face of the stub iiap near its free end, rivets passing through the iiap and the plate at its transverse center and extending above the face of the plate, said plate having a pair of upwardly oiset tongues at each side of the rivets extending transversely of the plate, the members of each pair of tongues facing each other, and pads of checks, each check consisting of a stub and a check proper, partially separated from each other, staples binding the checks at the stub end, said staples extending transversely of the pad and engaging the tongues, each pad having an opening between the staples, for engagement by the extended end of a rivet, said stubs being of a length to extend from the innermost tongues to the junction of the stub flap and back, and the check proper being of the same length as the cover flap. f

A book of the character specified, comprising a cover consisting of a back having a cover flap at one end and a stub Hap at the other, a plate arranged transversely of the inner face of the stub fiap near its free end, rivets passing through the flap and the plate at its transverse center and extending above the face of the plate, said plate having a pair of upwardly offset tongues at each side of the rivets extending transversely of the plate, the members of each pair of tongues facing each other, and pads of checks, each check consisting of a stub and a check proper, partially separated from each other, staples binding the checks at the stub end, said staples extending transversely of the pad and engaging the tongues, each pad having an opening between the staples for engagement by the extended end of a rivet.

A book of the character specified, comprising a cover consisting of a back having a cover flap at one end and a. stub Hap at the other, a plate arranged transversely of the inner face of the stub flap near its free end, and secured thereto, said plate having a pair of upwardly offset tongues at each side extending transversely of the plate, the members of each pair of' tongues acin each other, and pads of checks, each chec consisting of a stub and a check tially separated from each other, and staples for engaging the tongues, said staples binding the checks at t-he stub end.

A book of the character specified, comprising a cover consisting of a back having a cover flap at one end and a stub flap at the other, a plate arranged transversely of the inner face of the stub fiap near its f'ree end, rivets passing through the flap and the plate at its transverse center and extending above the face of the plate, said plate having a pair of upwardly offset tongues at each side of the rivets extending transversely of the plate, the members of each pair of tongues facing each other, and pads, each pad having mea-ns engaging the tongues at one side of the plate, and an opening receiving the adjacent rivet.

7 A book of the character specified, comprising a cover consisting of' a back having a cover flap at one end and a stub flap at the other, a plate arranged transversely of the inner face of the stub flap near its free end, rivets passing through the flap and the plate at its transverse center and extending above the f'ace of the plate, said plate having a pair of upwardly offset tongues at each side of the rivets extending transversely of the plate, the members of each pair of tongues facing each other.

8. A book of the character specified, comprising a cover consisting of a back having at one end a foldable cover fiap and at the proper, parl other a foldable stub fiap, a plate arranged transversely of the inner face of the stub fiap near its f'ree end and provided near each end with transversely extending upwardly offset tongues facing each other, and with a projection at each side intermediate the tongues, and pads each having means engaging the tongues and projections at one side of the plate and extending in opposite directions, and an elastic band encircling the pad and cover at the junctions of the flaps with the back.

9. A book of' the character specified, coin-A prising a cover' consisting of a back having at one end a cover flap and at the other a stub flap, a plurality of pads each consisting of a plurality of sheets bound together at one end detachably connected with the stub flap and arranged with their bound ends adjacent, the pads extending in opposite directions, and an elastic band encircling the pad and cover at the junction of each fiap with the back.

A oook of the character specified, coinprising a cover' consisting of a back having at one end a cover flap and at the other a stub flap, a plurality of pads each consisting of a plurality of' strips bound together' at one end detachably connected with the stub filap, and arranged with their bound ends adjacent, the pads extending in opposite directions, and a fiexible band encircling the pad and cover at the junction of each flap with the cover.
