LEW WALLACE REPLOGLE, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TOY.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnw VALLAE REP- LOGLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to toys.
The object of the invention is to provide the ligure of a horse or other animal, with means whereby the saine may be propelled along and simultaneously rocked or oscillated after the manner of the ordinary rocking horse.
Another object is to provide means for steering` the device so that the rider can guide the same in any desired direction.
To such ends this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement and combinations set forth in the following specification and particularly defined in the claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the drawings, in which- Figure l is a side View of the device with one of the supporting wheels removed. Fig. 2 is a view partly in plan and partly in hori Zontal sect-ion, the line of section being taken at 2`2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail, vertical, cross section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 with certain parts broken away to shorten the view and Fig. t is a detail, vertical, longitudinal section taken on the line t-#t of Fig. 2.
Referring to these drawings 10, is the main frame which is carried by wheels ll, 12. The wheels l1, are mounted upon an axle 13, one being rigidly connected therewith, and said axle is journaled in bearings let, secured to the under side of the frame 10. The wheels 12, are journaled upon an axle 15, which is pivotally connected with the frame, and said wheels 12, comprise the steering wheels of the device. The axle 15,
is pivotally connected to the frame in any suitable manner, as for instance by means of a king bolt 15, that passes through the frame 10, the axle 15, and a brace 17, secured to the under side of the frame. Suit-able means are provided for swinging the axle 15, upon its pivot, and as shown, a simple form comprises a segmental rack 1S, secured to the axle 15, a pinion 19, meshing therewith and carried by a steering rod 20, which is rotatably mounted in a Specication of Letters Patent.

bearing 21, secured to the frame 10. The steering rod extends up through a slot in the ligure of the horse and the upper end thereof is provided with a steering head, here shown in t-he form of a handle bar 22, by means of which the steering rod may be turned to control the direction of movement of the device.
Extending' up from the plat-form 10, is a support for the figure, and as shown said support comprises a pair of standards 23, which are connected together at their upper ends by a cross bar 24. A ligure of a horse 25, is supported upon said cross bar by means of a hinge or other pivot device 25a, the pintle of which extends transversely to the ligure, whereby itmay rock up and down in the manner of the ordinary hobby or rocking horse.
A crank shaft Q6, is journaled in bearings 27, secured upon the frame 10, and bears cranks 2S, on its ends, to the ends of which are secured pedals 9.9. Stirrups 30, are secured to said pedals and said stirrups are connected by a flexible band 31, which extends over a roller 32, that is supported from the cross bar 24, by means of ears or lugs 33. Said band acts to maintain the stirrups in an upright position at all times. The crank shaft Q6, is geared to the rear axle 13, and as shown said gearing comprises a gear wheel 34, upon the crank shaft 26, a gear wheel 35, meshing therewith, and a pinion 3G, that meshes with the gear wheel 35. The pinion 36, is fast upon the axle 13, and the gear wheel 35, is fast upon a shaft 37, which is journaled in bearings 37, secured to the frame 10. One end of the shaft 37, bears an eccentric disk 3S, around which is mounted a strap 39, that is connected to the ligure of the horse by a rod 40, having a pivotal connection 41, with the figure at its upper end.
In operation, the rider places his feet in the stirrups of the pedals and turns the crank shaft 26, which motion is transmitted to the axle 13, of the driving wheel, through the instrumentality of t-he gears 34C, 35, 36. The eccentric movement of the eccentric disk 33, is transmitted into a reciprocatory movement of the rod 40, which in turn causes an oscillation of the horse upon its hinge 25. The device may be steered in any 22, in the proper direction.
It is evident that while this device may be direction by simply turning the handle bars used as a toy for children, it may be made upon a larger scale and used as an amusement device in amusement parks.
I am aware that various alterations and modifications of this device are possible without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I do not therefore desire to limit myself to the exact form of construction shown and described.
I claim as new and desire to secure byv ing wheel, an axle secured to said driving wheel, a crank shaft, a gear wheel carried thereby, a pinion upon the driving axle, a gear wheel meshing with said rst named gear wheel and with the pinion, cranks upon the crank shaft, stirrups carried by said cranks, a roller, a flexible band connecting said stirrups and running over said roller to hold the stirrups upright, an eccentric connected to the intermediate gear, a pair of standards, a hobby horse figure pivotally connected to said standards and a connecting rod between said hobby horse figure and the eccentric.
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name, at Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, this 7th dayof October 1909.
LEV IVALLACE REPLOGLE.
