Patented Oct. 11, 1910.
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. WILKiNS,
- a citizen of the United States, residing at East Randolph, in the county of Catta-' raugus and State of New York, have invented certain .new and useful Improvements in Fluid-Pressure-valve Regulators; and I do '.hereby declare the following to be a full, .clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fluid pressure valve regulators and has for an object to provide an attachment for a balanced valve adapted to employ thepressure of the fluid passing through the valvefor controlling the pressure of the fluid upon the discharge side of the valve.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved diaphragm means with improved means for conducting fluid from the valve to the diaphragm whereby the valve is controlled thereby.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved means for regulating the resistance of the diaphragms to the fluid pressure.
WVith these and other objects in view, the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combination and arrangements of 7 parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical diametrical sectional view of the improved regulator. in association with a balanced valve similarly sectioned. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the regulator showing a fragment of a valve casing.
The re ulator which forms the subjectmatter 01 this application while adapted for association with various valves is especially adapted for use with the valve as shown embodying a valve casing 10 having inlet and outlet openings 11 and 12 and having a partition 13 constructed within such valve casing havin openings 14 and 15 therein whereby a balanced valve of substantially the usual and ordinary type is provided. The lower side of the valve casing 10 may be closed by the plug 16 and the valve itself may be of the type shown at 17. The upper side of the valve casing 10 is open as shown and is closed by a lug 18 having a central bore and a threade shoulder upon which a collar 19 is secured comprising a yoke extending above the valve casing as shown particularly at Fig. 2. Through the bore of the cap 18 a hollow valve stem 20 is inserted having a port 21 communicating with the bore 22 of the stem 20 and disposed within the valve casing 10. A stuifing box through which the Valve stem 20 extends is indicated by the cap 23 and the follower 24. Above the upper end of the valve stem 20 a plurality of diaphragms 25 of substantially the usual and ordinary construction are disposed connected by means of a sleeve 26 at the bottom of such diaphragms with the upper end of the valve stem. the diaphragms being in any approved number and communicating as indicated so that pressure supplied to the interior is supplied similarly to the interior of all of the diaphragms. The up er diaphragm is provided with acollar 2 engaged by a screw 28 which is inserted through the upper end of the' yoke 19 and is adapted to vary the pressure upon the diaphragm, a jam nut and handle 29 being provided for locking the screw in adjusted position and a hand wheel or manipulating part is also provided for operating the screw 28.
In operation the device is so regulated by the manipulation of the screw 28 that the valve 17 is held normally open by the resiliency of the diaphragms 25. Steam'is admitted through the inlet 12 and passing through the orifices 14 and 15 is discharged through the outlet 11 to its work. Any back pressure will increase the pressure through the hollow stem 20 into the diaphragms 25 and thus close or partially close the valve 17 until the pressure at the outlet side is relieved when the valve will be automatically opened by the contraction of the diaphragms.
WhatI claim is z-- 1. The combination with a valve and cas ing therefor, of a hollow valve stem extending into and communicating with the valve casing and connected with the valve, a yoke rigid with the valve casing and provided with an opening in alinement with the valve e valve stem, and a tension screw extendin' through the alined openin of the yoke an bearing against the top 0 the upper diaphragm.
2. The combination with a valve and eas-' ing therefor of a hollow valve stem extend- 10 ing into: and communicating with the valve casing and connected with the valve, a yoke rigid with the valve casing and extending above the valve stem, a diaphragm rigidly connected with the up er end of the valve stem, and means carrie by the yoke for exerting varying degrees of ressure upon the diaphragm above and in a inement with the valve stem. In testimon whereof I aflix my signature in presence. 0 .two witnesses.
