T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, SAMUEL T. VViNoninR, a citizen of the United States, residing at. Zanesville, in the county of Muskingum, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in envelops more particularly to devices of this character which may be folded into a small space when not in use or for transportation or storage, or to receive flat mail matter, and which may be expanded into boxlike form to receive larger or more bulky mail matter.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein the end portions are reinforced and increased in strength to enable the device to resist external pressure.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specilically pointed out in the claim; and, in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment o-f the invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the improved envelop is produced, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the improved envelop collapsed, or disposed in position for shipment or transportation, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the envelop partly folded, or in condition to receive the contents, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the envelop fully folded, and also showing a modified form of folding, Fig. 5 is a perspective view illustrating one manner of folding the bottom portion of the envelop, Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view illustrating another manner of folding the bottom portion of the envelop.
The improved envelop is formed from a single sheet of material cut in the form shown in Fig. 1, and comprises a body portion 10, side flaps 11-12 and end flaps 13-14. Extending from the side flap 11 is an extension closure flap 15, while a similar extension closure flap 16 extends from the side flap 12. The end flap 13 has an extension 17 while the end flap 14 has an extension 18. The extension side flap 15 has at its opposite ends extensions 19-20, While the side extension member 1G has end extensions 21-22. The side flap 1l is provided at one end with an extension flap 23, while the side 12 has a similar end extension 24. The end flap 13 has end extensions 25-26, while the extensions 17 of the end iap 13 has endextensions 27-28. Folding creases are formed along the dotted lines shown in Fig. 1, to enable the various iaps or wings to be readily bent into the forms shown in Figs. 2 and 4.
To fold the envelop for flat mail matter, such as letters and the like, or for the ship` ment or storage of the envelop, the end extensions 25-26-27-28 are folded inwardly upon the members 13-17 and the latter folded along the line 44 upon the body 10. The end liaps 19-2023 are then folded upon the flaps 11-15 and the latter folded inwardly upon the body 10 and the folded extensions 13-17. The end flaps 21-22 24 are then folded inwardly upon the flaps 12-16 and the latter folded upon the folded flaps 11--15. The flaps 14-18 are then folded over upon the folded flaps 12-16. The envelop thus folded is shown in Fig. 2. The envelop may be employed when in this condition for flat mail matter such as letters, circulars, or the like. `When the envelop is to be employed for mailing larger or more bulky mattei' the parts are distended and the envelop restored to the open form shown in Fig. 1. The extensions 13h17 are then bent at right angles to the body 10, the end flaps 25-26 folded at right angles to the extension 13, the sides 11--12 folded at right angles to the body 10 and the members 15-16 folded over at right angles to the sides 11-12 with the flaps 20-22 overlapped against the outer face of the flap 13. This arrangement locates the extensions 2.5*26 against the inner faces of the sides ll-12 with the members 15-16 overlapping and spaced from the body 10. The extension 17 is then folded over upon the adjacent portions of the folded members 1516 and at right angles to the extension 13, and the end extensions X7-28 folded against the sides 11-12. The various extensions and flaps it will be understood are gummed, and when the envelop is thus folded the parts are sealed. The gum is represented at 47. The envelop thus folded is shown in Fig. 3. After the contents are placed the end extensions 19-21 are folded inwardly at right angles to the members 15-16 and the extensions 23,24 folded overY the folded extensions 19-21. The closure {iap 14-18 is then folded over the folded flaps 23-241 and likewise over the adjacent portions of the flaps 1-5-16 and sealed in position. The sealed envelop is shown in Fig. t.
If preferred when first folding the lower or closed end of the envelop the flap 13 is folded at right angles to the body 10; the ends 25--26 folded at right angles to the flap 13; the flap 17 then folded at right angles to the flap 13 and the end extensions 27-28 folded against the outer faces of the folded flaps 25-26. The envelop thus folded is shown in Fig. 5. The sides 11-12 are then folded at right angles to the body 10 and the flaps 15-16 folded at right angles to the sides 11-12 and the flaps 20w-22 folded against the outer' face of the end extension 13 as shown in Fig. 4. If preferred the envelop may be first folded as shown in the detail view, Fig. 6. Either of the described foldings may be employed,
without departing from the principle of the invention as the same results are produced by both arrangements of the envelop members. t will be noted that by thus folding the bottom members that the corners are formed with a plurality of interlocking extension flaps, which very materially increases the strength and utility of the envelo p, and insures a greater degree of security to the contents. By this arrangement of the parts it will be noted that the end portions of the envelop are each formed with a plurality of interlapping and interlocking flaps, which materially increase the safety and strength of the envelop, by duplicating the flaps at the ends where the greatest strains occur. By this means all danger of damage to the contents of the envelop by rough handling is prevented, and the security and safety of the contents insured. This duplication of the flaps at the ends is thus an important feature of the s improved envelop, and adds materially to its utility and etliciency.
The improved envelop may be constructed of any suitable material and of any suitable size, and adapted for sending various articles by mail, and eectually protecting them during the transit, as the duplication of the parts at the ends and interlocking them as shown forms a rigid support to the envelop at the ends and prevents all danger of the crushing of the envelop during transit. The envelop is thus rendered relatively stiff and rigid at the ends, and is able to withstand pressure to which it will be generally subjected when in transit.
That ls claimed is A/n/envelop of the class described compri/sing a body having side iaps, a lower' end flap and an upper end flap, an extension at one end of each of said side fiaps, a side extension to each of said si'de flaps, a side extension to said lower end flap, a side extension to said upper end flap, end extensions to each of said side flap extensions, end extensions to said lower flap and end extensions to the side extension of said lower flap, said lower flap being foldable at right angles to said body and the end extensions of said lower flap and of its side extension being arranged for interlocking and interfolding, said side flaps foldable at right angles to said body and said side flap extensions foldable at right angles to said side flaps and spaced from said body with the end extensions of said side flap extensions inter-folded and interlapped over the lower end flap.
