ADJUSTABLE TRACE-SUPPORT AND PAD-LOOP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REGINALD lV. BRooKs, citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Trace- Snpports and Pad-Loops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to harness, and particularly to a device for connecting the pad and belly band of a harness to the trace, and thus supporting the trace and holding the belly band and pad in their proper relative positions, the invention consisting of a metallic slide through which the trace passes, having upper and lower loops for the attachment of the pad strap to the billet of the belly band, said slide being formed in two parts or members to clasp the trace and clamp the same, and being provided with means whereby the two members shall interlock,
The objects of my invention are to provide a device of the character described, whereby the slide may be adjusted. upon the trace to any sized horse; which shall permit the horse to get close to the side of a stall or other object, without rubbing the leather portion of the harness thereagainst; whereby no holes need be punched through the trace, thus weakening the same, and so constructed that the device has a direct bearing upon the pad strap and is also constructed that it can be fastened down in place so as to always remain in the same position, the device not only being effective in use, but ornamental to the harness.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, and to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the following de scription and accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a view showing my device applied upon a harness; Fig. 2 is a perspective View, showing the device applied to a trace; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the device and trace; and, Fig. 4 is a perspective view, showing the two members of the device separated from each other.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.

My device consists of a shank or body portion 2 having the form of a vertical bar and relatively thin, the opposite ends of the bar being laterally offset and longitudinally extended to form the opposed heads 3 and 4. Formed integral with the heads are the upper and lower loops and 6. The head 3 is cutaway on its inside face, at its middle, as at 7, this cut-away portion or recess not extending entirely through the head, while the head 4- is also cut away, as at 8, these recesses or cut-away portions being formed to receive the angular ends 10 of a vertically extending clamping bar or member 9. This bar 9, at its upper end, is formed with a transversely extending cross bar 11 integral with the body of the bar, the outer face of the head f being recessed transversely, as at 12, to receive the transverse bar 11, said recess intersecting the cut-away portion 8. The lower end of the clamping bar 9 is held in place and drawn toward the shank or body 2 by a screw 13, the head 3 and the lower end of the clamping bar being formed with sorew-threzuled openings 14. for this purpose. Pointed studs 15 and 16 are formed on the inner faces of the body 2 and the bar 9, these studs being adapted to be forced slightly into the trace, when the clamping member is in its clamping position.
It will be seen that the transversely extending bar 11 and the cut-away portion 12- are coinplemental to each other so that the upper end of the clamping bar interlocks with the main member of my device and specifically interlocks with the head t. By removing the screw 13, the clamping bar may be easily detached from its interlocking engagement with the body 2 and swung outward so as to permit the slide to be adjusted longitudinally upon the trace to any convenient position, and that when the slide is clamped upon the trace, it is prevented from any sliding movement thereon, by reason of the pointed studs entering the trace. The billet of the belly band is to be passed through the lower loop 6, while the strap of the pad B is to be passed through the upper loop and then buckled in the buckle 7).
it will be seen that this device provides an attachment whereby the trace is supported from thepad B, and whereby the belly band, the trace and the pad are all held in their proper relative positions, the belly band being immediately opposed to and in alinement with the pad strap. It will also be seen that the slide may be adjusted along the trace to suit horses of various sizes, and that when once fastened, it is securely held in place against any chance of detachment.
The particular advantages of my invention are that it saves leather and reduces the cost of making harness. It can be adjusted to any sized horse, and inasmuch as it projects slightly beyond the outer face of the trace, it permits the horse to get close to the side of a stall or other structure, without rubbing the trace. It will also be seen that the entire trace can be finished before the trace support is placed in position thereon, and that no holes are punched in the trace. such as are ordinarily required, whereby the trace is weakened. The interior face of the attachment is entirely smooth and therefore does not chafe the side of the horse. It has a direct bearing upon the pad. and the pad and belly band being held in alinement, there is no liability of twisting the trace when the pad or belly band straps are taken up, nor is there any wear upon the trace in consequence of a chafing of the belly band or pad straps thereon.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. A trace support and pad loop comprising a main body portion having a head at each end and being provided at each end with a loop, a vertical clamping bar formed at one end with a laterally enlarged portion to interlock with one of said heads, and a screw passing through the other of said heads from the outside thereof and engaging an end of the clamping bar, whereby the clamping bar may be adjusted nearer to or farther from the main body portion.
2. A trace support and pad loop comprising a relatively thin body portion provided with a projecting head at each end, said heads being recessed on their inside faces and being provided with integral loops, and a clamping bar adapted to be received within said recesses in the heads, one end of the clamping bar having a laterally enlarged portion interlocking with one of the heads, the other end of the clamping bar being formed with a screw threaded opening, and a screw passing through the other head from the outside thereof and into said screw threaded opening in the clamping bar, whereby the clamping bar may be adjusted nearer to or farther from the main body portion.
A trace support and pad loop comprising a relatively thin body portion provided at its opposite ends with inwardly offset heads, said heads being formed with upwardly and downwardly projecting loops, the inside face of the lower head being recessed,and the outer, inside and upper faces of the upper head being recessed, said outside recess extending on each side beyond the recess in the upper face, a clamping bar, the lower end of which is adapted to be re ceived in the lower recess, and the upper end of which is angularly bent and formed with a transversely extending cross bar at its extremity adapted to be received in the recess in the outer face of the body portion, and a screw passing through the lower head and into the lower end of said clamping bar, the inner face of the clamping bar and body portion being formed with inwardly proj ecting studs adapted to engage the trace.
Jr. A trace support and pad loop comprising a body portion formed with a loop at each end, a vertical clamping bar formed at one end with a curved extremity, said extremity being laterally enlarged at its termination to interlock with one end of the body portion, and a screw passing through the other end of the body portion and engaging the corresponding end of the clamping bar to adjust the lower end of the clamping bar toward or from the body portion.
5. A trace support and pad loop including a body portion having an integral loop at each end, a clamping bar having one end curved to extend through one of said loops, the extremity of the curved end being laterally enlarged and detachably interlocking with the corresponding end of the body portion, and a screw passing through the other end of the body portion and engaging the corresponding end of the clamping bar.
