WASHINGTON'L. GILROY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters .Patent No. 97,077, dated Not-einher 23, 1869; antotlatezl November 12, 1869.
DIG-ESTER FOR COFFEE-POTS.
The Schedue referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of tbc same.
To a- Zl whom it may concern Be it known that I, WASHINGTON L. GrLRoY, of the city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented-a new and useful Improvementin the \Strainers ot' Digesters for Making Liquid Extracts; A
and I do hereby declare that -the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawings, making a partot this specification, in whieh- Y v Figui-e1 is a perspective view, and
Figure 2, a central vertical section of one of the said improved strainer-s.
Like letters of reference indicate the same parts when in both figures.
The ebjeet of my improvement 'is to render the space or chamber, for receiving the article from which the liquid extract is to be made, adjustable in its ca parity, aml to afford increased facility for introducing the said article into the said space or chamber.
My invention consists, substantially as hereinafter described, in so constructing ami adjustably titting coneentrically together two hollow conical frusta, ot' perforated.sheet-metal or wire ganze, that by longitudinally moving the inner one within the outer one the space between them will be increased or diminished,in accordance with the direction of the movement; and also in providing for the introduction into the strainer ofthe. article from which the extract is to be. made, by enlarging the opening in the upper end of the outer ti'ustmm'and diminishing the height ot' thieinner one.
Referring to the drawings- A B is the outer hollow conical frustum, C D thcA inner hollow conical frustum, and E the variable space orchamber between the saidIfrust-a.
Ihis improved strainer is intended to be insert-ed iu any suitable boiler having a loose cover or lid, and so that, when inserted, it will rest with its bottom edge upon a narrow tlauge or support, fixed to the inner side of the boiler, ata short distance above the bottom of the latter, as indicated by the taint lines V \V, in tig. .5, for the purpose of making liquid cittract of tea, cot'ee, or other article. placed in the steamer. I
The outer frustum A B has a broad cylindrical band, b', tixed to its base, and the inner t'rustum C D has a much narrower band, d', fixed to it-sfbase, and also a. cross-bar, tl", which serves as a handle for the adjusting of C D in A B, and for the withdrawing ot' C Dtherefi'om, as occasion may require, the said band d fitting aml sliding accurately within the said band b. (Seev fig. 2.) v l The upper end ot' the frustmn A B has also an enlarged mouth, for the introduction of the article to be. digested, the said` mout-h being formed by a band, a', which is fixed to the frustum, and fitted with .a slip-cover, a; andthe upper end ot' frustmn C Durs also tit-ted with a small mouth, and a slip-cover, o', m` the. same manner, hutonly for the purpose of facili-v tating in cleaning C D.
The upper end ot' frusturn C`D, when in place in frustum A B, is a Vshort distance below the mouth ot the latter, as shown in fig. 2.
vAround the lupper part of thc outside of frustuiu A B, a ring of wire, e', is fixed eoncentrically to the sides by radial arms 4, for the purpose ot' keeping the upper partI ot' the strainer concentric with its containing-boiler. g
\Vhen the frustum C D is pushed into the frustnm A B, as far as it will permit, a eapacious'annular chamber, E, is left between them, for the reception of thc article which is to be digested, and when the said frustum C D is drawn outward, until the lower edge of its band d is tiush with the lower edge of' the band b of frustum A B, as indicated bythe faint linesx y, the capacity ofthe said chamber E will be greatly increased.
1n operation, the article to he digested having been introduced into chamber E, through the mout-h formed by the band a. ot' A B, and its cover a" replaccd,.the strainer is then to be inserted into the boiler, where it will he supported in position, as indicated by the faint lines V W, in tig. 2.
' The requisite quantity of water is now to be poured into the boiler, its cover replaced, and the vessel pla-ced upon a suitable heater, and boiling produced.
It will be readily seen that the capacit-y of the receiving-chamber E ot' this strainer can be varied, as the quantities of the article to be digested may rcquire, and that the mouth of the chamber E being cau pacious, and at the upper end of thc-strainer, gives greater facility for introducing, into the said chamber E, the article to be digested.
While boiling, the water will be continually passing from the bottom ot' the boiler upward, first through the sides of the frustum C D, then through the contents of the chamber E, and tinally through the sides ofthe trust-um A B, to the outside of the strainer, and from whence it will descend and pass between the lower edge ofthe band b and its suplmrting-tiange in the boiler, to the bottom again, as indicated by the arrows in fig. 2.
For making a clear liquid extract, of tea or coliee especially, this improvement, when applied to thel strainer ot" the digestcr, previously invented by me, will greatly increase the facilities and requirements of the lat-ter.
tum A B, and the relatively shortened height of thefrustum C D, the said parts being .constructed to operate together, substantially as and for the purpose described.
