MACHINE FOR MAKING REINFORCED-CONCRETE FILES, COLUMNS, AND THE LIKE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER CRAW- ronn CHENOWETI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, New York city, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for lIaking Reinforced-Concrete Piles, Columns, and the Like, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a machine for making a reinforced pile, column or the like, by rolling a reinforced sheet of material, such as a sheet of concrete, into a compact body and finishing the same ready for use. In U. S. Letters Patent No. 7 91,07 6 and No. 7 97 ,556 granted to me May 30th, 1905 and August 22d, 1905, respectively, will be found inventions pertaining to this class of subject matter, and reference is made to the same in connection with the present invention.
The invention consists in the various novel .and peculiar combinations and arrange ments of the several different parts of the apparatus, all as hereinafter fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
I have illustrated a type of my invention in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a View of the front end of my improved apparatus, that is, the end toward which the concrete body is rolled in the formation of the same. Fig. 2 is a side view of the apparatus, and in which the sheet of reinforced material has been rolled up to a considerable extent, as shown at the right hand side of the figure. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the apparatus.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numbers of reference designate like parts throughout, 1 is a stationary platform, inclined at a suitable angle downwardly from its rear to its forward end where it is pro vided with a pair of supporting rollers 2, 2, over which pass the wires 3 which are supplied by bobbins at mounted beneath the front end of the platform. The ends of the wires 3 are attached to the wire netting or reinforcement 5 which is embedded in the concrete 6 and forms the sheet of material from which the rolled body 7 is formed. into a series of bands upon the exterior of the finished rolled body, by the continued winding of the body after it has been completely rolled, as hereinafter described, the bands, however, not being herewith shown as no claim is made for the same in this application.
A set of tracks 8 are suitably arranged in the direction of inclination of the platform 1 and on these tracks run wheels 9 of a large traveling carrier 10 which is formed of suitable framework adapted to carry the several different parts of the apparatus, which parts are designed to move in respect to the stationary platform.
In the carrier 10 is mounted a drive-shaft 11 having a hand-crank 12 at each end thereof for operating the same and the motion of the shaft 11 is transmitted to the short counter-shaft 13, 13, at the respective ends of the carrier, through means of the intermediate gearing consisting in pinion 14 on shaft 11, gear 15 on shaft 16, gear 17 on shaft 16 and the pinion 18 on the counter-' shaft 13. These parts are duplicated at the opposite end of the machine and are numbered from 14 to 18. Counter-shaft 13 is provided with a clutch 19, and counter-shaft 13 with a clutch 19. These clutches are designed to connect with a rotary shaft or rod 20 to which is attached one end of the wire gauze netting 5, which is embedded in the cement 6, the other end of the netting 5 being attached to the forward end of the stationary platform at a point indicated at 21, Fig. 2.
From the described parts, it will be understood that with the carrier drawn back so that the winding-rod 20 lies close to the high part of the inclined platform 1, and the sheet of reinforced material 56 in position, the turning of the cranks 12 to operate the drive-shaft 11, will cause the rod 20 to turn and slowly wind up thereon the sheet of reinforced material and form the same into a compact roll, as indicated more particularly in Fig. 2. This rolling forward of the sheet of material, gradually draws the carrier 10 forwardly, by reason of the wire netting 5 being attached at 21 to the forward end of the stationary platform. In this way, the sheet of reinforced material is formed into a roll by means of a stationary platform and a traveling winding device.
Above the winding rod or shaft 20, which is replaced for the winding of each new column or pile, is arranged a compression roll 22 which is mounted in suitable bearings in the outer ends of a set of tilting levers 23 which are pivoted at 24 to a suitable upright on the traveling carrier 10. These tilting levers permit the compression roller to rest with its own weight upon the upper part of the rolled body 56 as the same is being formed, the free ends of these tilting levers 23 being provided with block and tackle 25 which may be tautened so as to limit the distance to which the compression roller may descend as well as to raise the same considerably above and clear of the rolled body, whenever it may be desired to do so. lVith this block and tackle 25 is used differential pulleys and a connect-- ing cord 25 extends from the same over the guide pulleys 25", 25, to a suitable point on the traveling frame or carrier where it may be readily operated by hand so as to slacken or tauten the ropes of the block and tackle in order to adjust the tilting levers 23.
Forwardly of the winding rod 20 and the body which is rolled thereby, is arranged a holding back device or roll 26 which is mounted in bearings upon brackets 27, which depend from the forward ends, respectively, of the tilting levers 28, which are pivoted at 29, to a suitable fixed point on the carrier 10, the rear ends of these tilting levers 28 being provided with block and tackle 30 for raising and lowering the levers, as desired. As the rolled body increases gradually in diameter, the holding back roll may be raised up slightly by drawing down the outer end of the tilting levers 28, by tautening the block and tackle 30. This roll 26 is designed to remain in contact with the forward part of the rolled body in order to assist in making the same compact and to help keep its shape while being rolled. The forward pressure of the rolled body against the holding back roll 26, also has a slight tendency to move the carrier forwardly, though the rolled sheet of reinforced material connected between the stationary platform and the winding rod 20 is depended upon for this operation of moving the carrier forwardly.
In the operation of the apparatus, the wire mesh or netting 5 is placed upon the stationary plat-form 1 and covers substan tially the length and width thereof and to this netting may be added reinforcing bars 5 at suitable intervals substantially in the manner shown in my U. S. Letters Patent No. 797,556, hereinbefore referred to. The forward edge of'the wire mesh is fixed to the forward end of the platform at 21 (see Fig. 2) while the rear edge thereof is made fast to the winding bar or tube 20 to the ends of which the clutches 19 and 19 are fastened, to rotate the bar 20 through means of the driving gear, shown at each side of the machine. When the wire netting or mesh is in place a layer of concrete is placed thereon so as to embed it, as indicated in Fig. 2, and then the driving gear is operated to turn the winding-shaft. This moves forwardly the carrier on the rails 8, thereby winding the concrete coated wire mesh into aroll, as indicated in Fig. 2, wherein the roll is partly completed. After the roll has been completely formed and the forward end of the wire mesh detached from the stationary platform, the winding rod 20 is further operated to turn the roll in order to wind about the same the several independent wires 3 until enough turns thereof have been formed about the body to constitute substantial bands around the same, thus completing the Wire bound roll. The clutches 19 and 19 are then opened and the completed roll is left free upon the supporting rollers 2, whereupon the carrier may be drawn backwardly by means of sprocket wheels 31 mounted on the movable frame or carrier 10, and a sprocket-chain 32 passing over each sprocket wheel and thence under guide pulleys 33 on the carrier and to fixed points 34 and 35 arranged at suitable places. These sprocket wheels 31 are operated by a shaft 36 which extends across the movable frame and has each end squared at 37 (see Fig. 3) for receiving a hand-crank to operate the same.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a machine for making reinforced concrete piles, columns and the like, the combination of a stationary platform, a rotary shaft mounted above said platform and provided with means for driving it, means for carrying the said shaft as it is rotated laterally across the platform for rolling the sheet of reinforced material around the shaft, the said sheet of reinforced material being connected at one end with the shaft and at the other end with a point that is stationary whereby the rotation of said shaft winds the reinforced sheet of material about the same.
In a machine for making reinforced concrete piles, columns and the like, the combination of a stationary platform, a rotary shaft mounted above said platform and provided with means for driving it, means for carrying the said shaft as it is rotated laterally across the platform for rolling the sheet of reinforced material around the shaft, the said sheet of reinforced material being connected at one end with the shaft and at the other end with said stationary platform whereby the rotation of said shaft winds the reinforced sheet of material about the same.
3. In a machine for making reinforced concrete piles, columns and the like, the combination of a stationary platform, a rotary shaft mounted above said platform and provided with means for driving it, means for carrying the said shaft as it is rotated laterally across the platform for rolling the sheet of reinforced material around the shaft, the said sheet of reinforced material being connected at one end with the shaft and at the other end with a point that is stationary whereby the rotation of said shaft winds the reinforced sheet of material about the same, and a compression device for acting upon said body as it is rolled on the platform.
4. In a machine for making reinforced concrete piles, columns and the like, the combination of a stationary platform, a rotary shaft mounted above said platform and provided with means for driving it, means for carrying the said shaft as it is rotated laterally across the platform for rolling the sheet of reinforced material around the shaft, the said sheet of reinforced material being connected at one end with the shaft and at the other end with a point that is stationary whereby the rotation of said shaft winds the reinforced sheet of material about the same, a sprocket-wheel mounted loosely on said means for carrying the shaft, and a sprocket-chain passing over said sprocketwheel and having its ends secured, respectively, to fixed points near the front and rear of the machine, whereby the turning of the winding shaft serves to roll the sheet of reinforced material about the same and at the same time carry the shaft across the platform.
5. In a machine for making reinforced concrete piles, columns and the like, the combination of a stationary platform, a rotary shaft or rod around which the sheet of reinforced material is rolled and means for carrying said shaft laterally across the platform, the said sheet of reinforced material being connected at one end with the said shaft or rod and at the other end with said platform whereby the rotation of said shaft or rod rolls up the reinforced sheet of material on the platform, a compression device and a traveling carrier on which the same is mounted for maintaining it in contact with the body as it is being rolled, and means for simultaneously moving said carrier and rotating said shaft.
6. In a machine for making reinforced concrete piles, columns and the like, the combination of a stationary platform, a rotary shaft or rod around which the sheet of reinforced material is rolled, a traveling carrier for moving said shaft or rod laterally over said platform, a compression roll mounted in said traveling carrier and maintained in contact with the body as it is rolled, means for simultaneously moving said carrier and winding the sheet of reinforced material around said shaft.
7. In a machine for making reinforced concrete piles, columns and the like, the combination of a stationary platform, a 1'0- tary shaft or rod around which the sheet of reinforced material is rolled, a reinforce member connected with said platform and shaft, respectively, a traveling carrier for moving said shaft or rod laterally over said platform, a compression roll mounted in said traveling carrier and maintained in contact with the body as it is rolled one end of the sheet of reinforced material being connected with said shaft and the other end with said platform, driving gearing for said shaft or rod whereby as the shaft is actuated to roll the material, the said carrier is thereby moved forward.
8. In a machine for making reinforced concrete piles, columns and the like, the combination of a stationary platform, means for rolling a reinforced sheet of material into a compact body on said platform, a compression device, and a holding back roll maintained in contact with the forward part of the body as it is rolled.
9. In a machine for making reinforced concrete piles, columns and the like, the combination of a stationary platform, means for rolling a reinforced sheet of material into a compact body on said platform, a holding back roll engaging the forward part of said body as it is rolled, a traveling carrier for said holding back roll, and means for moving said carrier forwardly as the body is rolled.
10. In a machine for making reinforced concrete piles, columns and the like, the combination of a stationary platform, means for rolling a reinforced sheet of material into a compact body on said platform, a holding back roll engaging the forward part of said'body as it is rolled, a traveling carrier, tilting levers mounted on said carrier and having the said holding back roll mounted thereon.
11. In a machine for making reinforced concrete piles, columns and the like, the combination of a stationary platform, means for rolling a reinforced sheet of material into a compact body on said platform, a holding back roll engagin the forward part of said body as it is rolle a traveling carrier, tilting levers mounted on said carrier and having the said holding back roll mounted thereon, and an adjustable device connected with said tilting levers for holding the same in adjustment.
12. In a machine for making reinforced concrete piles, columns and the like, the combination of a stationary platform, means for rolling a reinforced sheet of material into a compact body on said platform, a holding back roll engaging the forward part of said body as it is rolled, a traveling carrier, tilting levers mounted on said carrier and having the said holding back roll mounted thereon, block and tackle mounted on said carrier and connected with said tilting levers to hold the same in adjustment.

In a machine for making reinforced concrete piles, columns and the like, the combination of mechanism for rolling a reinforced sheet of material horizontally into a compact body, a gravity roller acting upon the side of said body as it is rolled, and a swinging support for said roller pivoted above the rolled body and to the opposite side thereof from where the roller acts upon the rolled body.

In a machine for making reinforced concrete piles, columns and the like, the combination of mechanism for rolling a reinforced sheet of material horizontally into a compact body, a gravity roller acting upon the side of said body as it is rolled, a swinging support for said roller pivoted above the roller above the rolled body and to the opposite side thereof from where the roller acts upon the rolled body, the said swinging support being bent or curved above the rolled body.

In a machine for making reinforced concrete piles, columns and the like, the combination of mechanism for rolling a reinforced sheet of material horizontally into a compact body, a gravity roller acting upon the side of said body as it is rolled, and a swinging support for said roller pivoted above the rolled body and to the opposite side thereof from where the roller acts upon ALEXANDER CRAWFORD OHENOWETH.
