FREDERICK ENGELI-IARDT, OF ST. J OI-INSVILLE, NEW YORK.
COMBINED SPOOL AND SPOOL-I-IOLDER FOR AUTOPNEUMATIC PIANOS AND SIMILAR MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS. v
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Allg. 23, 1910.
Application filed January 14, 1910. Serial No. 538,121.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, FREDERICK ENGEL- HARDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Johnsville, Montgomery county, State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined A Spools and Spool-Holders for Autopneumatic Pianos and Similar Musical Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved combined spool and spool-holder for musical instruments more particularly designed for use on autopneumatic pianos. The record spools in instruments of this class are of comparatively large diameter, because each record generally contains, not a single piece of music, but a considerable number' of such pieces.
My improved spool is so constructed that it is light in weight and occupies but a small space, so that it may be easily shipped, and may be readily applied to and removed from the holder.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through my improved combined spool and spool-holder; Fig. 2 a top view of the spool holder, with one of the flanges removed, and Fig. 3 a right hand end view of Fig. 2, showing the sleeve in position.
The numeral 10 indicates a cylindrical roll or holder which is preferably hollow and is closed at its ends by plugs 11 and 12. Roll 10 is provided with a relatively fixed head 13 and a removable head 14 that constitutes the iianges of the roll. Head 13 is secured to roll 10 by screws 15 or otherwise, ant inwardly projecting central boss 16 of said head engaging a corresponding countersink 17 of the roll. At the opposite end of the latter there is fitted into a central perforation 18 of plug 12, a tube 19 held against independent rotation by a dowel 20. Tube 19 is provided with a threaded cupshaped enlargement 21 which is engaged by the threaded hub 22 of head 14.
Holder 10 is adapted to be snugly embraced by a spool comprising a tubular sleeve 23 upon which the perforated music sheet 24 is wound, the sleeve being composed preferably of card-board or similar light material. In order to hold the sleeve against slipping on roll 10, it is provided with a tapering inwardly extending rigid or non-resilient feather 25. This feather is accommodated within a corresponding longitudinal outwardly opening groove 2G of roll 10, said groove opening at that end of roll 10, which carries the movable head 14, and being widened at its mouth to form a pair of opposed pockets 27. The latter permit feather 25 to be grasped by a pair ofv pliers or a similar tool for withdrawing the sleeve from roll 10. This arrangement has been found desirable, because different rolls and sleeves may occasionally vary slightly in diameters, and also because sometimes the paste-board sleeves shrink under the influence of the weather. If a withdrawing tool could not be applied to the feather, the sleeve could only be removed from the roll by obtaining a firm grip on sheet 24, which would be apt to injure or destroy the same.
If it is desired to lit a music sheet carrying sleeve 23 upon roll 10, head 14 is unscrewed from cup 21 and the sleeve is slipped over the roll, care being taken that feather 25 properly enters groove 26, whereupon head 14 is reattached to the roll. Head 13 is provided with a notched socket 28 which is adapted to be engaged by the usual driving pin of the musical instrument, while cup 21 is adapted to be fitted upon the usual spring pin thereof.
It will be seen that my improved ,combined spool and spool-holder may be readily assembled and separate-d, that injury to the record is prevented during the removal of the spool and that the latter may be readily shipped owing to its light weight and small size.
I claim:
A device of the character described, comprising a sleeve having an inwardly extending feather and adapted to carry a music sheet, a roll extending through said sleeve and having anoutvvardiy opening groove at Signed by ine at St. Johnsville, N. Y., this one end bfor aecoilnmodating the feather, said 12th day of January, 1910.
groove ein en ar e at its end to admit grasping degices togthe eather, and a pair FREDERICK ENGELHARDFL 5 of heads carried by the roll, one of said Witnesses:
heads being removably secured to the EROUIC A. HANDY,
grooved end of said roll. ELMER Fox.
