ROMAN EDWARD ADAM, OF CORONA, NEW YORK.
SELF-CLOSING DEVICE FOR DOORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 16, 1910.
Application filed December 1, 1909. Serial No. 530,772.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROMAN EDWARD ADAM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Corona, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self- Olosing Devices for Doors, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention pertains to selfclosing devices for doors and particularly to a device that will take the place of the springs and the pneumatic closers hitherto used for that purpose.
The springs have been found disadvantageous, as they do not effect the complete closure of the door, but merely return into closing position without rigidly holding it in that position or without bringing about the engagement of the locking bolt with the opposite post. Again, the pneumatic closer, although effective in bringing about the complete closure of the door, is objectionable because of its expensiveness and therefore not within the reach of the general public.
The object of my invention is to remedy both these disadvantages, which I accomplish by my new device. The same consists substantially. of a spring actuated sliding shoe to be stationarily secured to the post to which the door is hinged, so that it will project at a certain angle to and be constantly in contact with the door. When the latter is swung open, the slide carrying a roller is forced forward against the tension of its spring and upon releasing the door, the force of the spring will. thrust the slide into its initial position, whereby the door is forcibly closed.
In order to make my invention more'clear, the same is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a front view thereof.
WVith reference to Figs. 1 and 2, a indicates a slotted bar, one end of which is provided with a knee or bend b and the other end of which is hinged to a plate or base 0, which is to be stationarily.attached to the post to which the door is hinged, (not shown).
(Z denotes a shoe, which carries a roller 6 and which engages the slot f of the bar to be capable of sliding therein longitudinally.
This shoe is carried by a rod 9 that extends in longitudinal direction to the bar a and projects through an opening of the bend b.
Coiled around this bar and resting with one end against the inner surface of the bend b and with its other end against the shoe at is a spring it. When the device is attached, the shoe cl with its roller 6 is adapted to extend at a certain angle toward and to be constantly in contact with the door, so that when swinging open the door, the latter will press against the roller and shoe respectively, forcing it forward against the tension of the spring 72.. WVhen the door is released, the shoe, by the force of its spring will cause the return of the door into closed position.
Since the post to which the door hinged, may have different inclinations relative to the door when the latter is in closed position, it is necessary, in order to enable the device to fit in all cases, to allow of an adjustment of the angle between the base 0 and bar a. For this purpose, an arm 2' projects from the part c, and is provided with a number of perforations j and the bar (a has a perforation, so that when the arm overlaps the bar, a pin it: may be passed through the registering perforations of the arm and the bar, and the angular position of the latter thus secured.
The nut Z on the threaded outer end of the rod allows of the tension of the spring It being regulated according to requirements.
Some modification may be made by those skilled in the art in the various details of construction without deviating from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The herein described device, comprising a base, a slotted bar projecting therefrom and adjustable at different angles relative thereto, a shoe, guided and longitudinally slidable in said bar and a spring con stantly pressing the shoe outward.
2. The herein described device, comprising a base, a slotted bar projecting therefrom adjustable at different angles and having a knee portion, a shoe guided and longltudinally slidable in said bar, a rod extending from said shoe guided in said knee portion, and a spring around said rod constantly pressing the shoe outward.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROMAN EDWARD ADAM.
