Be it known that I, GEORGE J. LANG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in Baldwin township, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Embroidery-Hoops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawlng.

This invention relates to embroideryhoops or frames, and the objects of my invention are to provide novel means for holding a hoop or circular frame upon a suitable support whereby the piece of work held by the hoop or frame can be easily worked upon with both hands if necessary, and to provide a hoop or frame holder that can be easily adjusted to position the hoop or frame at a desired inclination.

Other objects of this invention are to provide an adjustable' clamping device for holding an embroidery hoop or frame upon a table, chair-arm, or other support, and to accomplish the above results by a device that is simple in construction, durable, easy to manipulate, and highly eilicient for the purposes for which it is intended.

These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by the mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of an embroidery hoop or frame constructed in accordancewith my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of a detached embroidery hoop or frame. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. l is a plan of a socket adapted to form part of the device, and Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of the same.

llhe embroidery hoop or frame comprises an inner ring 1 and an outer ring 2, the outer ring being adapted to t over the outer side of the inner ring 1 and clamp a piece of work 3 between said rings. It is preferable that the outer ring 2 be covered with a piece of fabric 1, whereby the edges ofthe piece of work 3 bound against the inner ring 1 will not be injured. j

Attached to the inner side of the inner ring l by a rivet 5 or other fastening means is a universal joint, comprising a socket 6 and a, ball 7 retained in engagement with being split, as at 12, whereby the socket will frictionallytengage the head. The socket 11 is suitably` attached, for instance by solder, to a clamping member 13 having a lateral extension 14 and a vertical slotted extension 15. These `extensions are arranged at `right angles-to one another and the extension 14 is adapted to extend over a table top or snitable support 16, while the extension 15 eX tends downwardly at one side thereof. Adjustably connected to the slotted extension 15 by a bolt 16a and a wing thumb nut 17 is another clamping member `18, this member having the vertical portion thereof provided with an inwardly projecting lug 19 adapted to extend into the slot of the extension 15 and prevent the member 18 from wabbling relatively to the member 13. The lateral portion of the member 18 has the end thereof provided with an adjustable screw 20, the upper end of which is provided with a head 21, while the lower end is provided with a suitable handle or wheel 22. The head 2l is adapted to confront the lateral extension 14 of the member 13, and the confronting faces of these two elements are provided with pieces of felt 23 adapted to protect the surface of the table top 16 and prevent the same from being injured by the clamp.

It is through the medium of the universal joint that the embroidery frame isswung to any desired angle, and it is through the medium of the head 10 and the socket 11 that the embrodiery hoop or frame can be easily removed without removing the clamp from the table top or its support.

With the screw 2O adjustable in the member 18 and this member adjustable relatively 100 to the member 13, the clamp can be easily adjusted to grip the average table top or chairarm.

Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is

1. Iii an embroidery hoop or frame, the combination with an inner and an outer ring adapted to hold a piece of work, of a univer-sal joint carried by said inner ring, a depending tapering head carried by said universal joint, a tapering split socket adapted to receive said head and frictionally hold the saine', a clamping member connected to and adapted to support said socket, a vertically movable clamping member adjustably connected to the first mentioned member, and a clamping screw adjustably carried by the last mentioned member and adapted to cooperate with the first mentioned member in attaching said hoop or frame to a suitable Support.

2. In an embroidery hoop or frame, the combination with inner and outer rings for supporting a piece of Work, of a universal joint arranged below said rings and connected to the inner ring, a depending tapering head carried by one of the sect-ions of said joint, a split tapering socket for receiving said head, a clamping member liXed to the lower end of said socket for supporting it, a vertically-movable clamping member adjustably-connected to the rst-ment-ioned clamping member, and an adjustable clamping eerw earned by the semi-mentioned clamping member. j

3i In an embroidery hoop or frame, the combination with inner and outer rings for supporting a piece of work, of a universal joint arranged below said rings and connected to the inner ring, a depending tapering head carried by one of the sections of said joint, a split tapering socket for receiving said head, an angle-shaped clamping member iiXed to and supporting said socket, said member having a depending extension, a vertically-movable clamping member adjustably connected to said extension, and an adjustable clamping screw carried by said second-mentioned clamping member.
