`Specification of Letters Patent. i Patented July 26, 1,910.
Application led February 24:, 1,909. Serial No. 479mm.
To all wil-m 'it may concern:
Be 1t known that l, GEORGE THACKRAH, a
citizen of the United States, and aV resident ot' Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented a new and Improved Index, of which the fol'- lowing is a iull, clear, and exact description.
VvThe invention relates to book-keeping, and its object is to provide a new and improved index for indexing the names of persons, places, things or words by the first and nal `letters thereof, the index being simple andA easily manipulated and arranged to. permit instant reference to an exceedingly large number ot entries.-
The invention consists in a chart having vertical and horizont-al rows oi lettersof the alphabet, each of the letters in the vertical row representing a corresponding first letter of a given word or name, and theA letters yin the horizontal row corresponding to the final letter of the same Word or name,
' and intersecting horizontal and vertical numeral rows in alinemcnt with the said letters of the alphabet and containing consecutive numerals, the numeral at the intersection of a horizontal numeral row and a vertical row representing the space of the entry book for the given name or Word.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying draw ings forming a part of this speciiication, in which similar characters of yreference indicate corresponding parts in all the views. l
Figure l is a perspective View of an entry bool: for names or words and open atthe index bound in the entry book; Fig. 2 is a lperspective view of the entry book open at someo'l' the entries entered according to the first and last letters of the name or word; Fig. 3 is a similar view ot' the same o` en at some entries entered according tothe rst and final letters with rst vowel sections;
and Fig. 4 is a similar view ot the same.`
open at some entries according to the first and the final letters with rst vowel columns.
rlhe book a for the entry of given names or words is provided with index 'pages b, b (see Fig. l) andwith name br word pages if, b and b2, b2, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, for recording the names or words according to the index. Instead of binding Cri in the index with the pages' of theboolr it is evident that the said index can be used separately from the book, if desired.
. The index shown in Fig. l consists of a 'divided intofentry sections f heade verticalrovv c of the letters of the alphabet, and which row may be represented on each side of a page, as plainly shown in Fig.
Inent with the lettersof the "alphabet in" both rows `c and d. The numerals in the rows c are consecutive and, as shown in Fig. l, run 'from l to.676,.and represent a'correspending number'of entry'spaces f of die pages b, ZJ', `asvindicated in Figf2, each space f having `a numeral g correspondin to the numeral in the intersecting rows e o the index.v Now in order to enter a name or Word according to the irstand final letters thereof, proceed as follows: Presuming that the name to be entered is Em1nond,` thenl We find the irst and final letters are E and D, and following the horizontal row headed by the letter E 1n the vertical row o` to the intersection with the vertical row headed by the letter l) in the horizontal row l we find the numeral 1.08. Thus names or words beginning with E and ending with v l The index may be""used in connection '4 with 676 ages, indexed according `to the first and nal letters with first vowel. sections, as indicated in Fig. 3. In this case,
`the pages b2 are numbered as atc', according tothe index numerals, and t e age is .left by the vowels a,"`e, i, o, u, and y. *By this arrangement 676 entry pages, are used, and allowing 50 lines to each reference, there would be a capacity for 33,800 names.
It is understood that thepage number is derived from the initial and last letter of the naine or Word to be indexed in the manner 'above described, and the name or word 1s entered on thecorresponding page in the space f headed bythe first vowl in the name or Word. Thus ii ,the name Baitom'y George, forinstanci-e, is to be indexed, the page numberdO is found in the'index at the at the intersection of the horizontal and vertical rows c andcZ headed by the first and last letters B and N of the name Barton;7 and the latter is then entered'inV the division headed 21, as this letter a is the lirst vowel in the word Barton In a like manner, the name or word Benson is entered on page 40 in the division headed by the vowel e,7 as will be readily understood by reference to Fig, 3.
The index may be used iii connection with 200 pages, indexed according to the first and final letters with first vowel columns, as shown in Fig. 4. In this case, adjacentv pages b3, b3. are divided into sections f2, each headed by a numeral g2 derived from the index, and each page is divided into entry columns headed by the vowels a, e, i, 07 ui y' I Entries are made in the spaces or sections f2 according to the first and last letter, and in the corresponding column headed by the first vowel in the naine, as will be readily understood by reference to F ig. 4t. In this manner by the use or' the index and the divisionv and columns of the entry pages, provision is made for di'Iierentl-y-lieaded 41050 entry spaces for containing` 10000 naines.
1 From the foregoing it will be seen that by the use of the index, naines and words can be readily entered in the book, or reference to Such entered names or words can be` Having thus described my invention, I"
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
In an index, the combination of rows of vertically arranged similar squares, and rows of horizontally arranged similar squares, a vertically alphabetically ari-aimed row of letters, each of the said letters disposed opposite one of the said rows of horizontal squares, a horizontally alphabetically arranged row of letters, each of the said letters disposed opposite one of the said rows of vertical squares, successively iucreasiiig numbers arranged in the said squares with one number .in each square and with the initial number in the initial square opposite the initial letter in the said vertical row of letters and the initial letter in the said horizontal row of letters, and with the horizontal rows of numbers increasing successively from left to right from the initial number and the `vertical rows of numbers increasing proportionally downward -from the initial number, and au entering ,page vhaving a. surnameinscribed thereon, the number of the said page beingr similar to the numbe at the intersection ot the horizontal row of numbers having opposite thereto in the vertical column or' letters the initial letter of the said surname, and
the vertical column of numbers having op posite thereto in the said horizontal row ot letters the final letter of the said surname.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE TIICKRAII. Tituesses James W. SxNDnns, Graven AL'rRiin.
