To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. RAMsnUnG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somersworth, in the county of Strafford, State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tying Devices for Plants; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invent on relates to devices for tying plants to vertical supports such as stakes or the like.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a device made of a single length of wire bent in a peculiar manner to engage a support such as a stake or stretched cord, the device being provided with certain string engaging clips and being of novel form and construction.
The invention consists of a single length of wire bent in a novel manner to provide a new and improved form of tying device for plants.
In the accompanying drawings, like char actors of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and :--Figure 1 is a view of a form of trellis having the invention applied thereto, the trellis being shown both with rods and with a cord. Fig. 2 is a view of the device taken in a vertical plane, the view showing what may be termed an edge view. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device.
This tying device comprises a wire having one end 10 sharply rebent as at 11 to form a string engaging clip, the extremity of said end being bent away from the opposed part 12 of the wire as indicated at 18 in order to permit introduction of string into the clip thus formed. The opposed portion 12 is again bent at an obtuse angle as indicated at 14 and rebent sharply upon itself as at 15 to form a second string engaging clip. The rebent portion is then continued in a direction at an obtuse angle to form what may be termed a stem portion 16, and this stem portion constitutes a continuation which lies in the plane of the first clip formed by the portions 10 and 12. The remaining portion of the wire is first bent at an obtuse angle to said continuation as at 17 and this portion 17 lies in the plane of the continuation and first clip. The wire is finally rebent to form an open hook 18, the mouth of which lies in the direction of the first clip and the hook itself lies in a plane at an obtuse angle to the plane passing through the continuation and first clip as clearly seen by reference to Fig. 2. The second clip is furthermore curved in a direction opposite to the inclination of the hook as also seen in said Fig. 2.
In using this device in connection with a rod 19 the hook is engaged over the rod so that the portion 16 lies substantially parallel to said rod. The second clip 15 is then sprung over the rod so that the parts assume the position shown in Fig. 1. The curved portion of the clip 15 will serve to prevent accidental displacement of the device from the rod and the wire is of sufficient resiliency to frictionally engage the rod and hold the entire device at the proper height. One end of a string is then inserted in the first clip as indicated at 20 and passed around a suitable portion of a plant 21. The other end of this string is then engaged in the clip lO as indicated at 22, thus holding the plant upright. When used in connection with a cord, as at 23, the cord is engaged in the second clip 15, the resiliency of which clasps the cord firmly and the string applied as before. In this event the hook 18 is inessential and where the devices are intended to be used solely in connection with cords the portions 16, 17 and 18 may be omitted, thus cheapening the construction. There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.

As an article of manufacture, a tying device for plants comprising a wire having one end sharply rebent to form a string engaging clip, the extremity of said end being bent away from the opposed part of the wire, said opposed part being again rebent at an obtuse angle and rebent sharply to form a second string engaging clip, said wire being continned in a direction at an obtuse angle to the last mentioned portion, said continuation lying in the plane of the first clip, the remaining portion of the wire being first bent at an obtuse angle to the continuation in the In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, 1n presence of two Witnesses.
