ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 8, 1909. Serial No.
Patented July 26, 1910. 521,676.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER Knnorr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Wyandotte, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to envelops of the class wherein provision is made for preventing the surreptitious opening of the same, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this character.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a view of the blank from which the envelop is constructed. Fig. 2 is a view of the envelop with the end flaps in folded position. Fig. 3 is a view of the envelop in condition to receive its contents. Fig. 4: is a view of the envelop fully folded.
The improved envelop comprises a body 10 having end flaps 1112, a back flap 13 and a closure flap 14:. The body may be of any required size, and the proportions of the completed envelop will be controlled by the dimensions of the body '10, as will be understood.
In the preferred form of the envelop the end flap 12 is provided with a transverse slit 15 while the end flap 11 is provided with spaced slits 16-17 whereby a central tongue 18 and two side tongues 19-20 are formed. The tongue 18 is designed to be passed through the slit 15 when the end flap 11 is folded upon the end flap 12 and with the side tongues 1920 located between the end flap 12 and the body 10, as shown in Figs. 2 and 6. The back flap 13 is provided with a central tongue 21 and side tongues 2322 spaced from the central tongue, and is also provided with spaced slits 2425. The closure flap 14 is provided with a centrally located projecting tongue 26 and with a central slit 27 and side slits 2829. The tongues 21-26 and the slits 242527 are in alinement, while the slits 2829 are in alinement respectively with the side tongues 2223. The outer portion of the central tongue 18 is gummed upon the outer face as indicated at 30, while the tongues 212223 are likewise gummed upon their outer faces as indicated at 31, and the outer surface of the tongue 26 is gummed as indicated at 32. The back flap 13 is also gummed as indicated at 33, and the closure flap gummed as indicated at 34.
With a blank thus constructed the envelop is formed as follows. The end flap 12 is folded upon the body 10 and the end flap 11 folded over the body 10 and extending over the end flap 12. The gum 30' of the tongue 18 is moistened and the tongue inserted through the slit 15, the tongues 192O inserted between the body 10 and the flap 12 and pressure applied to seal the tongue 18 to the flap 12. The back flap 13 is then folded upon the folded end flaps 1112 and sealed thereon, leaving the tongues 2122-23 free. This disposes the envelop in position to receive its contents or in the condition shown in Fig. 3. After the contents of the envelop have been deposited the closure flap 14 is folded over upon the back flap and the exposed portions of the end flaps, the tongue 21 inserted through the slit 27 and the tongues 2223 inserted through the slits 28-29. The tongue 26 is now threaded through the spaced slits 24 25 from the inside of the closure flap and the tongues 212223 threaded through the slits 272829 from the inside, the tongues having been previously moistened to cause the gum material to adhere, so that when pressure is applied the various tongues will be sealed in position.
What is claimed is n envelop comprising a body, a back flap and a closure flap, foldable upon the body, the back flap fol able upon the end flaps and the closure flap overlapping the back flap, said closure flap having a plurality of slits near the free edge thereof, and said back flap having a pair of spaced slits cut in the approximate center of the body thereof, a tongue extending from the center of the free edge of the closure flap and tongues extending from said back flap, the tongues of said back flap insertible through the slits of said closure end flaps, said end fla s flap, and the tongue of the closure flap insertible through the spaced slits of the back fla the tongue of the closure flap being of Sn cient length to project beyond the spaced slits and seal upon the back flap, and the central tongue of the back flap being of sufficient length to fold back and extend beyond the free edge of the closure flap and seal upon the inserted tongue of the closure flap and upon the portion of the back flap be- 1( tween the spaced slits.
In testimony whereof, I alfix my signature, in presence of tWo Witnesses.
ALEXANDER KEROFF.
