LEVER MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
A Application filed December 20, 1909. Serial No. 584,066,
1 T0 dll'whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, JAMES l )muo'rn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ofPm-tland, in the county of Multnoniah ut""aiid Stateof ()regon, have invented certain J-new and useful Improvements in Lever Meehanism, of which the following is z 'specificat ion.
My inventionis an improvement in lever o' mechanism, and consists in certain novel j constructions, and combinations of parts h'ereinat'ter described and claimed.
, v {The object of the invention is to provide a simple lever mechanism for operating the 'ispwinding gear of a hoisting engine, or simi- "lar devices, wherein both the Winding drum andthe tripping drum are operated by a I single lever, "thusleaving one hand of the engineer free for other purposes, as, for in i- 0- 'stanee. to handle the throttle.
, 1 Referring to the drawings forming a part EhereofF-Fi ure 1 is a side view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan view partly insection. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view. of a portion of the operating mechanism, and Fig. 4 is-a side view of the same.
In the present embodiment of the invention, the hoisting drum 1 and the tripping drum 2are mounted on a single shaft 3,
-BOWvhiehis journaled in bearings 3, on a frame c'onsisting'of side plates t and 5, which are t j -secured to the floor or other supports by bolts 6.
' 'Thedrums 1 and 2 are loosely journaled on'the shaft, and each drum is provided, on
{its inner end, with an annular marginal {flange 7 having a collar 8 secured thereto,
, the lnner surface of which'is conical, as
shown. The collar is of material having a and forms one portion of a friction clutch.
A disk 9 is secured on the shaft between the drums and is provided with an annular -series of crown teeth 10, and on each sideof the teeth with a conical projection 11 adapted to engage the inner surface of the collar '8," when the adjacent drum is moved toward 'fthe disk, and clutch the said drum to the -disk and to the shaft.
#- MA drive shaft 12 is jourrialed in front of f the shaft 3 and parallel therewith in bean V -&ings- 13 on brackets 13*, and. the shaft is 1 provided with a pinion 14 meshing with the orownteeth of the disk, A disk 15,'pro- W5 -videdwith a wrist pin 16, is secured on ahle in each guideway. A cylinder21 is supported on eachhase"19,'and the piston rod 22 of the cylinder is 'eonneeted'with one end of the adjacent hlock, and the'block is connected by a link 23 with the Wrist pin 16 of the adjacent disk.
A counter oroperating sh 'aft24 is journaled in bearings25 on theside plates, in front of the drive shaft, and'an arm 26 is secured to oneend of the shaft outside of the hearings. Ablock 27 is a-djustably secured to the other end by a set screw 28, and an arm 29, is seci'i'red diagonally to the outer face of the block byholts'or rivets'30.
The drums'nre; movahle longitudinally of v the shaft 310 connect illelllltrflhll diseonneet them from the disk, and are operated by means of the usual screws 43 and43", the screw 43 o 'ierating the hoisting rope drum, and the screw43 the tripping rope drum. A lever3l isiprovided atone end with a grip 32, and at t ie other "with a split hearing 33 which engages the outer end of the screw 43, and a bolt34; is provided for clamping the sections of the bearing on the screw. The lever is further secured by a key 35. V v
Asuhstantially triangular plate 36 is pro .vided at itsphase end [Withopenings 37 for receiving bolts 38, whereby it may besecured to theilever, and the apex end of the plate is provided ivith a lateral flange 39 through whichis threaded a, set screw 40. p A link 4]. isvpivoted by onefend, as at 42, to the I plate near the apexend," and the opposite nd of the link is pivoted to the outer end of thear1n29, before. inentioned.
The screw 43*has secured to the outer end thereof an arm 44, which is connected by, a.
link'45 with the arm 26 on the shaft. 24. The cylinders 21 are supplied with motive fluid th-rough the pipes 46-fro'm'any' suitable son'rce, and are'ojf any usual'or desired constructio r a In operatiomthe motive'fiu'id is admitted to the cylinders, and the' blocks or cross heads 20 are reciprocated in the ideways, thus rotatin the driving shag 12, and through the mtermeshing-of the pinion and crown teeth, the disk is also rotated. The hoisting rope and'thetripping'rope are 11 connected with their respective drums, so
- that when the drums rotate, they will be 4 wound or unwound in accordance with the di r ction of rotation. i
t will be observed that the connection between the shaft 24 and the screws 43 and 43 is such that when the said shaft is.oscillated toward the left in Fig. 1, the screw 43 is turned in one direction, while the screw 43 is turned in the other, so that when the said shaft is oscillated in either direction, one screw will be operated to con'-' nect its drum with the disk, while the other will be operated to disconnect its drulnfrom the disk.
When the lever 31 is moved into the po-" sition shown infull lines in Fig.1,the hoist-- :for simultaneously moving the drums in the same direction, so that when one is engaged with the driving means, the other will be disengaged therefrom.
I claim:-- a
1. In a-deviee, of the class described, a; plurality of drums, a common-operating means for the drums, a lever for connecting one of the drums with the operating means, an arm for connecting the other drum with the operating means, a shaft parallel with the drumsand-having at each end an arm, said arms being at right angles to each other for the purpose specified, a connection between one of the arms and the drum operating arm, a plate connected to. thelevei', said plate having at its upper edge an overhangof the shaft with the plate intermediate its ends, and a set screw threaded through the flange and engaging the link.
2. In a device of the class described, aplurality of drums, a common operating means 'for the drum, a lever for connecting one of the drums Wlilll the operating means, an
