To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY WV. OHAMPLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Valters Park, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vaginal Irrigating-Syringes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in vaginal irrigating syringes, and the object in view is to produce a simple and eflicient device of this character, and so constructed, that the vaginal orifice may be closed while using a douche, means being provided to protect the sensitive superficial nerves from the hot solution usually employed in treating the vaginal mucous membrane.

The present invention comprises various details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter A designates a shield or plug, which may be made of any suitable material, and which flares preferably in the manner shown in the drawings Said shield has a solid shank portion B, provided with two ducts G and D, the former of which is positioned above the latter and is adapted for the reception of the douche tube D having a perforated nozzle D at one end, which nozzle flares as shown and is upwardly extended, and so arranged that the fluid may be distributed in numerous jets to thoroughly cleanse the various parts of the mucous membrane, thus avoiding the harm and danger of a single or few jets. The

order that the nozzle end thereof, may be brought into different positions to conveniently reach all of the parts to be treated. The outer end of the tube D 'is preferably flattened as at E, forming a convenient means whereby the tube may be rotated, or moved back and forth through the aperture C. A flexible pipe F is adapted to be attached to the outer end of the tube D and through which the solution is conducted to the tube D It will be noted that the inner end of the shield or plug, is slightly dished as at K, so as to allow the solution, after having been sprayed against the mucous membrane, to flow into the drainage duct D. The outer end of said duct D, projects beyond the solid portion 0 of the shield or tube, and is downwardly disposed, and to which projecting end, a pipe is adapted to be connected to convey away the solution. The thin marginal edge of the shield flares as shown and is adapted to conform to the adjacent parts of the vaginal orifice, and serve to hold the instrument in place.

The operation of the device will be readily understood, and owing to its simplicity of construction, it may be operated readily by the individual being treated. By the wide range of the movement of the tube D back and forth through the duct in the shield, as well as the provision of allowing a rotary movement being imparted to the tube all parts of the surface of the mucous membrane may be conveniently reached, and thoroughly cleansed and medicated.
