Description

W. WALPOLET SLEIGH.' APPLICATION FILED SEPT.13, 1909.
Patentedjune 14, 1910.
UNTTEU HTATEH PATENT @FFTQE. I
WILLIAM WALPOLE, OF OXENDEN, ONTARIO, CANADA.
SLEIGI-I.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WALPOLE, of the village of Oxenden, in the county of Grey and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleighs; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to a double bench knee for connecting the upper part of the sleigh to the sleigh runner, so that the upper part of the sleigh will be maintained in its normal position regardless of the irregularities of the road over which the sleigh is traveling, by permitting either runner of the sleigh to oscillate for a reasonable distance independently of the other.
For an understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of part of the sleigh showing the construction of the sleigh knee. Fig. 2, is a vertical cross sec tion of the sleigh knee and runner. Fig. 3, is a side View of the sleigh knee.
Like characters of reference refer to like parts throughout the specification and drawings.
Fitted on the top of the sleigh runner a is a grooved base Z) having flanges 70 and m which overlap the runner sides 61 and c, and projecting from the base 7) is a block f having two semi-circular rockers g and h arranged in parallel planes and separated by an unoccupied annular space 2'.
Between the semi-circular rockers g and h, with its circumferential edge 70 in contact with the bottom of the annular space i is a rocker Z for the bench bed m. The under side of the bench bed m, on either side of the rocker Z is concaved to receive the curved surfaces of the semi-circular rockers g and h, and is provided with flanges n and 0 to engage the .outer side faces of the rockers g and it so as to prevent the lateral move- Specification of Letters Patent.

ment of the parts, this movement being further prevented by the engagement of the rocker Z, with the inner faces of the rockers g and h. The rockers g, h, and Z are rockably connected by a pin 20, which passes through annular apertures g and r in the rockers g and h, and through an annular aperture .9, in the rocker Z.
At the ends of the arms 1) and w of the bench bed m are bench plates 00 and y having grooves t and u in which are contained the ends of the beams a and b the arms 4) and on being braced by webs .2 and z integral with the bench bed m. A sand board 0 is rigidly attached to the beams a and 7), near their centers to support the bunk d and the end of the reach 6 which are fastened to the said'sand board 0 near its center by means of the king bolt f which passes down through the bunk cl, reach e and sand board 0. The ends of the arms 4) are formed with slotted hinge parts i), to which, and to the toes of the runners, are connected rods 0.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a sleigh in combination, a runner, a sleigh knee consisting of a base attached lengthwise to the runner and having side flanges engaging the outer surfaces of the side faces of the runner, and two upwardly extending rockers, a bench bed having a downwardly extending rocker to enter the unoccupied space between the rockers of the base, and bench plates attached crosswise of the bench arm, the cross beams being supported on the arms of the bench plate, a hinge member at the front end of the bench arms, and a stay rod pivotally connected to the hinge member and to the runner.
Toronto, September 13th, 1909.
WM. WALPOLE.
Signed in the presence of" C. H. Thomas, H. L. GRIMBLE.
