Description

SAELVAH HILER, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
Lette/rs Patent No. 96,111, dated October 26, 1869.
IMPROVED STAIR-RCD.
The Schedule referzedpto in the" Letten Patent and making part a! the ramo.
the ordinary form, as represented by the drawings,V
and then 'covering them with a suitable enamel, having a smooth, durable, and brilliant surface,`of any color, whichemay, if desired, be ornamented with gilding or colored in stripes or figures.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to described its method ot' manufacture.
Stair-rods, of the forni represented in my drawings, are usually` made of sheet-brass or some analogous metal. I make mine of sheet or rolled iron, the saine being-cut from a sheet, and bent into the form shown,`
by means of suitable rolls and shaping-tools, so as to be capable of being slipped into buttons or holders, fastened on to stairs in the ordinary way; or, if preferred, the rod may be made of a straight strip of thick sheet-iron, having the edges turned over, or
otherwise properly finished, ,designed to be held in simple loops or staples attached to the stairs.
It is not necessary to give a more particular description of the mode of cutting and fashioningvthe iron into a stair-rod, as all persons skilled in the art are familial' with it; nor is it necessary to describe the process of enamelling the surface of' iro'n; the art is old and well known, and the ordinary method of enamelling may be employed upon my stair-rod.
When the enamel has been thus fixed .on the rod, it is evident that the surface may be ornamentcd by .gilding or painting, in the ordinary manner.
The advantages of my stair enamelled rod consists in its beauty and its cheapness compared with those made of brass, and its not being liable to become tarnished or its lustre impaired by use, never requiring scouring or cleaning.
I do not claim, broadly, t-he enamelling of the surface of iron, as that is an old art; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to se eure by Letters Patent, is
An enamelled stair-rod, as a new manufacture,
when made substantially as and for the purpose described.
Witnesses J. P. FITCH, Tnos. A. MAsrsnsos.
