To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. MoGANN, of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Bars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for securing adjacent vertical edges of plates or panes of glass and particularly large panes of plate glass such as are used for show windows, and it has for its object to provide a sash bar adapted to engage the said vertical edges and to securely support the same against either inward or outward displacement, a particular object being to enable the portions of the bar which bear upon the inner sides of the glass plates to remain permanently in place, the portions which bear upon the outer surfaces of the plates being removable so that the plates can be installed and removed wholly from the outside without interference with objects in a show window located behind the plates.
The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a fragmentary elevation of a portion of the angle of a show window, said drawing representing parts of two adjacent glass plates and portions of the vertical sash bar which secures the adjacent edges of the plates. Fig. 2 represents a section on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a section on line 3-3 of Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4: represents a view similar to Fig. 2, the portions of the sash bar that bear upon the outer sides of the plates being removed. Figs. 5, 6 and 7 represent fragmentary perspective views showing different parts of the sash bar.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In carrying out my invention I provide a parting member adapted to be interposed between adjacent vertical edges of two glass plates 7, said member being an elongated bar the length of which is practically coextensive with that of the vertical edges of the plates between which it is interposed. Said parting member is composed of two'longitudinal strips or sections 8 and 9, portions of which are shown in perspective in Figs. 5 and 7 the section 8 being relatively wide and provided at its ends with screw-threaded holes 10 adapted to receive attaching screws 11 which secure the section 8 permanently to the top and bottom horizontal sash members between which the panes or plates 7 are located, said screws being inserted in shoes 12 which are attached by suitable means such as screws 13 to the horizontal bottom and top sash members. I have represented only the bottom horizontal member, the same being designated at 1 1, but it will be understood that there is a top horizontal member to which a similar shoe 12 is attached, said shoe being connected by screws 11 to the upper end of the parting member section 8. The section 9 of the parting member has the general form shown in perspective in Fig. 7 and constitutes a head extending across the outer edge of the section 8, and projecting from opposite sides thereof, said section or head having a rounded outer surface. The outer edge of the section 8 is provided at suitable intervals with screw-threaded holes 15, 15, and the outer section 9 with screw-threaded holes 16 which coincide with the holes 15 when the sections are assembled, said holes being adapted to receive attaching screws 18 which not only secure the outer section 9 to the body section 8 but also secure to the parting member, as a whole, the clamping members hereinafter described.
19, 19 represent clamping members adapt ed to bear on the outer sides of the plates 7 and provided with segmental cars 20, the inner sides of said ears conforming to and being movable upon the rounded outer surface of the outer section 9 of the parting member.
21 represents a segmental clamping shoe conforming to the outer surfaces of the ears 17 and secured in place by the screws 18. The described parts are so formed that the clamping members 19 are adapted to bear simultaneously on the outer sides of the plates 7, the said plates being adjustable so that they may stand in an angular relation to each other, thus conforming to the positions of the plates when said plates are an gularly arranged as shown in Fig. 2, the clamping members being also adjustable so that they may stand in alinement with each other when the plates 7 are alined.
WVhen the parts are adjusted as shown in Fig. 2, the inner edges of the plates 7 bear against the sides of the body section 8 of the parting member, the clamping members 19 bearing on the outer sides of the plates and preventing the outward displacement of the same.
As above stated, the body section 8 of the parting member is permanently secured in place. The detachable connection of the outer section 9 with the body section 8 enables said outer section with the clamping members 19 and the clamping shoe 21 to be removed from the body section and from the sash, thus leaving the outer sides of the glass plates unobstructed as shown in Fig. 4, so that in the event of breakage of either of the plates 7 requiring removal and renewal of the same, this operation can be performed wholly from the outside without removing the body section 8 and without disturbing anything within the window. In removin the said outer section, the clamping menfioers and clamping shoe, the screws 18 are partially withdrawn sufliciently to permit the separation of the section 9 from the section 8, without entirely withdrawing said screws from the outer section 9. After the separation of the section 9 from the sec tion 8, the screws 18 may be turned inwardly snfiiciently to hold the section 9, the clamping members 19 and the shoe 21, assembled in their operative relation to each other as indicated in Fig. 6, the said parts being removable and replaceable as one part. It will be seen therefore, that when it becomes necessary to renew one or both of the plates 7, the section 9, the clamping members, and the clamping shoe may be removed from the section 8, the latter remaining in its normal position, and the removed parts being retained in their proper relative positions by the screws 18, thus obviating the loss of time that would be involved if the removed parts had to be separated from each other and separately removed and applied.
In another application for Letters Patent of the United States, filed by me April 14, 1909, Serial No. 489,804, I have shown a construction similar to that above in all respects, excepting that the parting member, including the head having the rounded surface on which the cars 20 bear, is made in one piece instead of being in two separable sections as here shown, said application showing the parting member provided with inner clamping members adapted to bear on the inner sides of the plates 7 when the latter are arranged in alinement with each other. It will be understood, therefore, that the present invention is an improvement on that shown in the said prior application, the improvement consisting in making the parting member in two separable sections, the
outer one of which is removable with the clamping members 19 and the clamping shoe 21.
I claim 1. A sash bar comprising a parting member adapted to be interposed between adjacent edges of two assembled glass plates and to support said plates against inward sidewise displacement, said member being composed of a body section adapted to be permanently connected with fixed top and bot tom sash members, and an outer section detachably secured to the body section, and clamping members adjustably secured to said parting member and adapted to prevent outward sidewise displacement of said plates, said outer section and clamping members being separable as one part from the body section.
2. A sash bar comprising a parting member adapted to be interposed between adjacent edges of two assembled glass plates and to support said plates against inward sidewise displacement, said member being composed of a body section adapted to be permanently connected with fixed top and bottom sash members, and an outer section detachably secured to the body section and having a rounded outer face, clamping members adapted to bear on the outer sides of said plates and having segmental ears movably seated 011 said outer face, and means for detachably securing said ears and outer section to the body section.
3. A sash bar comprising a parting member adapted to be interposed between adjacent edges of two assembled glass plates and to support said plates against inward sidewise displacement, said member being composed of a body section adapted to be permanently connected with fixed top and bottom sash members, and an outer section detachably secured to the body section and having a rounded outer face, clamping members adapted to bear on the outer sides of said plates and having segmental ears movably seated on said outer face, a segmental shoe adapted to bear on the outer sides of said ears, and screws adapted to engage threaded orifices in the two sections of the parting member, and detachably connect the outer section, clamping members, and clamping shoe to the body section, and to retain the clamping members and shoe in engagement with the outer section when said parts are separated from the body section.
